Atonement & the best novel adaption of recent times?
by Barbora Misakova

I would bet that almost every young girl but also older woman dreamed about living in the movie. Now try to imagine you live in 1935 and you are a young and beautiful lady living with your wealthy parents in enormous mansion. But I would say this is the only positive thing on being Cecilia Tallis. Atonement is a new romantic drama based on Ian McEwan's novel and directed by Joe Wright who was also director of Pride and Prejudice very nice adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. This time we are going to be witnesses of the story where one person can change the course of several lives. Atonement tells a story about young Cecilia Tallis who fell in love with Robbie Turner, son of family's housekeeper but her family didn't want to see them together and torn them apart. Ok, ok you think I am going to persuade you how great romance is waiting for you in this movie. I think I have to disappoint you. When you click on any web site which has something to do with movie and move reviews and look at this movie, you will see many positive critics. Let's look on some of them. Hollywood Reporters regards this movie for "the best novel adaptations of recent times" and Peter Bradshaw from British Guardian says it is very "clever, ambitious, compassionate picture". Killer Movie Reviews doesn't save on compliments when declared: "As close to perfection as mere mortals can aspire to." But not only movie itself deserves appreciation. Keira Knightley and James McAvoy who acted the main characters do their job perfectly and compliments are wallowing from everywhere. Gary Brown from Houston Community Newspapers said the acting was superb and The Movie Chicks.com continues by adding that "James McAvoy and Keira Knightley are intoxicating together." I don't know if I persuaded you about the quality of this picture, but I decided & I want to see it and I will do it in a very short time. If it wouldn't be good how it could get seven Oscar nominations, won Golden Globe and also dominates British Academy Films Awards with 14 nominations?

Svedska Akademia opisala Lessingovu ako ,,prozaicku so zenskymi skusenostami, ktora so skepsou, zapalom a predvidavou silou podrobne preskumala rozdelenu civilizaciu". Tazila najma z obdobia straveneho v Afrike, skumajuc rozdelenie bielych a ciernych.

The Queen
by Zuzana Valkova

What do you think of, when you hear the name Madonna. I'm almost 100% sure that it's not the one from Bible. She is an icon, the big M, the queen of pop, the material girl. Yes; the press also uses these names for her. Press loves her. During her life she was a great object to write about. All her mistakes, scandals, relationships, almost every step she did were inspirations for newsmakers. She was born in the United States. Her father was Italian, her mother was Canadian and died quite young. She was raised in a strict Catholic/Italian background. She always wanted to be a dancer, but her destiny was to be a singer. She moved to New York and here she found her success. They noticed her and she became a star. She was something different, she was sexy, scandalous, and she spoke about everything. People loved her dance moves and her songs. She was the missing piece in the industry. She has totally released 10 studio albums and she has been on 7 tours. It wasn't enough to be just a singer and dancer. She decided to try her luck in movies. But except movie Evita, this wasn't very good decision. She is much better in the music field. Now, she is a mother of three kids, good wife and she is loved by millions of fans. She is trying to help other people and we all agree with her. Why not, when she has enough money. There is no doubt, that she is the queen of pop. She is one of the best selling female music artists all over the world. Last year she was the best, actually.

Evolution of Tecktonik
by Sandra Stoklaskova

Do you like dancing? Especially, do you like hip-hop, techno and aerobics? If yes, great times for you. There is a dance which is a combination of these styles, known as Tecktonik, and is spreading to the world. Small dancing circles up the Parisian streets, in a scene from Notre Dame to Eiffel Tower, in 2001 were the beginning of revolutionary Tecktonik dance. This is a mixture of punk, hip-hop, house music, techno styles and rave. This innovative subculture with post-postmodern characters has only a few exact rules, which have to be followed by its members. This dance, was founded by ordinary people from the street, however is now becoming a leading position all around the world. Thanks to YouTube.com it is even more and more popular among the people, especially young working-class, across the globe. Glenda Lenga, a young model sayd: "We weren't getting enough out of the music, something was missing ! and I think Tck is growing because people feel like they are expressing more. It is evolving. We don't dance the same as a few years ago." Tecktonik, or Tck is not only about the music or dance, moreover it includes also clothing and way of life. It is kind of culture, which attract, catch and keep young people as quickly, that they even don't realize. Their style features with hair jelled into ducktails, tight jeans and colors of neon mixed with black and white. Tecknotik's centre is Paris; however it has also an address. Keeners of this style meet regularly every Saturday in Metropolis club, near to the Orly airport, where their shows are not shaking only clubbers, but also the building.

Non-taxpayer
by Lenka Lehenova

Wesley Snipes, it is the popular name which everybody knows. We can see this famous actor in movies like Blade or Money train. I would ask that what problems or troubles can famous people like he have? Sometimes I have feeling that they have everything and if they want to make themselves more popular they just start to be different. 45-year old star is on trial now and his case is noted like one of the biggest criminal cases. He is accused of failing to pay tax on 58 million dollars of income. The result is that he could face 16 years in jail. I know that people don't like paying taxes, who would like to pay them but we have to If we want to be a part of society and to live with calm life. And it is a low of course. There are also the other two names, Eddie Ray Kahn and Douglas P Rosile, two protesters who don't trust US government has the right to demand income tax. Snipe- non-taxpayer just wanted to avoid paying of tax. Internal Revenue Services hope that media's interest about this case will happen no more trying to avoid paying taxes. Snipes future depends on the jury, which consist of seven women and five men. I think that we all are curious how it will finish.

'Crash' on the small screen
by Zuzana Zelenakova

The hit movie about the complexities of racial tolerance became a sensation in 2005. It won several Oscars including the one for Best Picture of the year. The cast was first-class, Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser, Ryan Philippe, Thandie Newton, rapper Ludacris, and Don Cheadle who was also one of the producers. Now it is set to appear as TV series for Starz network, the pay cable channel. The 13-episode one hour series will be aired as its first drama series. Several members of the crew that worked on the movie will be back for the series. Paul Haggis, the film's director, co-writer and producer, will return as executive producer along with Don Cheadle. Co-writer and producer Bobby Moresco, producer Bob Yari, producer Mark R. Harrisa and executive producer Tom Nunan of the original 'Crash' will participate as well. The cast is not known yet. It is rumored though that Don Cheadle might reprise his role as police detective and eventually also persuade the other actors from the film to join the series. Starz programming executive Stephen Shelanski said the producers are reluctant to bring back the movie characters unless the same actors are to appear in the roles. The production of the series is scheduled to begin this spring.

Movies make money, but money doesn't make movies
by Barbora Misakova

The world of movies is full of money. If you want to make a good movie you need them as a salt. You need good actors and if you want them you have to make them a good offer. If you have actors you longed to get you have to find good costumes and of course you have to pay for them. If you want your characters to look good you have to pay for their make-up girls. I could continue but the point is that you have to as a movie studio invest incredible amount to create a great movie. Of course good movie can be made with a smaller investment but you have to find a good story and interesting faces. Anyway if you want to be a film maker, prepare yourself you will need some cash. If you are successful you will get your money back and if you are lucky you will become a millionaire. You just need to have a nose for good materials. Just look at such Stallone's comeback & his new movie Rambo, which is actually the follow-up of the 1980s trilogy and was also directed by him, earned 18.2 million dollars in its first weekend. Yes of course to get such amount of money is great, but if you look some reviews then you will maybe get the point. For example on rottentomatoes.com which has also their own Awards & Golden Tomato Awards you can see their rate of Rambo is quite low. It got only 37 percent and the consensus sounds: "The excessive violence is more nauseating than entertaining." Sometimes a quality has nothing to do with the money the movie earned. Another example of this fact is romantic comedy called 27 Dresses which got in its second weekend $ 13.4 million, but on the web site mentioned above didn't get so good rate & only 37 percent which makes this movie "clichéd and mostly forgettable." On the other hand there are movies which got high rate and also their earning is quite satisfactory. Science-fiction movie called Cloverfield got 76 percent rate on rottentomatoes web site and also earned more than 40 million dollars in the opening weekend, but now it has fourth place. Sixth place got "The bucket list" with Jack Nicholson; seventh place belongs to "Juno" with its 10.1 million dollars. Eight place has Nicholas Cage in his "national Treasure: Book of Secrets" and Daniel Day-Lewis got with its "There Will Be Blood" ninth place and earned 4.8 million dollars. At the end I would just like to add that doesn't really matter how much money a movie will earn, but if it stays in your mind and heart then it is a sign of a good work.

Depply In Love
by Kamila Moravcikova

John Christopher Depp II, aka Mr. Stench, aka Colonel, aka Sexiest Man Alive, aka Cpt. Jack Sparrow, aka unfortunate love of my life. Academy Award nominated and Golden Globe winning actor, unsuccessful rocker (well, I don't think that opening for Iggy Pop once in your life is what makes you a real rocker), screenwriter, director, producer etc. He played in many excellent movies as well as in many poor ones, looking both good and horrible, with great fashion taste and an awful one, image of rock star that gave up drugs and the one of caring father in one time. It has been announced that a new movie "Public Enemies" is ready to be shot. What's much more important and what really counts is that Johnny will play there. I can remember like it was yesterday the first time I saw him on the screen. It was Tim Burton's movie Edward Scissorhands, the movie that changed my life. I can recall the end of the film, myself lying on the floor, mad, my desperate mum trying to stop me from crying. Edward was left alone and I was weeping every single night for weeks. Though, that's the magic of the movies and silver screen. You can watch your favorite scene over and over again, trying to capture everything, every move, every glance. And then just wait for brand new movie so you can cry again, wanting to be the one Johnny kissed or died for.

Writers Guild of America
by Lenka Lehenova

Los Angeles, Hollywood - The first things that I think about when I hear these words is red carpet, famous people, actors, singers...It is something what I will never try. We can only read about it. Journalist write about them and we believe it. Sometimes it is true, sometimes gossips. At the moment the situation in Los Angeles is a little difficult. Sometimes I think that they have nothing to solve so they are looking for some troubles. Strike by the Writers Guild of America,East (WGAE) and the Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) where the two labor unions representing film, television and radio writers strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) representing the interests of American film and television producers started on November 5, 2007. There is about 12 000 writers whose joined the strike. Writers Guild of America strike influenced TV and movie production. A lot of television shows like CSI:Miami, Lost, Big Brother, Shark are affected and show's focus was in risk. Everybody wants to know if is it strike coming to the end. Nobody knows what else they will contrive. Writers have agreed to work on the upcoming Grammy Awards. They have signed an interim. I think that nobody know how long it will be last but everything is just only about money. If they find out that they can have money from it they will continue. Money are king of the world.

Top prize for Coens
by Sandra Stoklaskova

Brothers Ethan and Joel Coen won on Saturday the top prize from the Directors Guild of America for "No Country for Old Men". Coens are the second team including two persons in a history, who won a Directors Guild honor, after Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins for their "West Side Story" from 1961. It is assumed, that they will be honored with the same price at the Academy Awards, when the Oscar will survive the existing troubles of the writers strike. As we know, presently, there is a writers strike. This is the fact, why the destiny of the famous ceremony Oscar is still uncertain. Writers have been on strike already for three months, and are still refusing the cooperation with the rest of entertainment industry. Also the ceremony Golden Globe has been called off, due to the lack of stars. This show was canceled after celebrities announced, they would not support Writers Guild of America. And, maybe, this is as also the future of Oscar will looks like. This strike is very dangerous, as the film industry is loosing the money every day. "I sure hope so. The Oscars are kind of the link between the world of consumers and the world of entertainment," said Dan Glickman, the head of Motion Picture Association of America, and added: "I mean, a billion people or more watch the Oscars, and so it would be a real shame if we weren't able to keep that precedent, that history of this event going."

Step ahead in American writers strike case?
by Zuzana Zelenakova

The big Writers Guild of America strike started on November 5, 2007. About 12,000 writers joined. It was announced after unsuccessful negotiations about new contract between the Guild and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represent production companies and studios. The previous contract expired on October 31. The Guild argued that profits from airings or purchases of their programs are the necessary part of their income, upon which writers have to rely during the periods of unemployment common in this profession. WGA also requested doubling of DVD sales residuals, or profits. But this request was later removed. The day Academy Awards nominations were announced both sides gave joint statement about informal talks. Academy Awards ceremony could be thus saved from the fate that has befallen the Golden Globes. The Guild also announced that it will not picket Grammys. The contract talks from the beginning of December broke down after the companies demanded from the Guild to remove several issues, including the equalization of reality and animation shows. However, on Tuesday union executives accepted the request in goodwill gesture in order to conclude the whole thing as soon as possible. Now the main contract issue being discussed is the compensation for movie and TV projects distributed over the Internet. Meanwhile a provisional deal was made between WGA and several individual production companies. It provides compensation of 2 percent on downloaded films and 2.5 percent on TV shows. WGA is in further negotiations with other independent producers now to achieve the same deal.

What do you feel when you see a clown?
by Ivana Bruderova

Red nose, bagged clothes in a garish colors and big impractical shoes. This is the appearance of a typical clown. The most of people remember their childhood when they loved circus and clowns. But something changed in the minds of children. The new study of University in Sheffield revealed the children didn't like clowns. University was doing research how to make children's wards in hospitals more friendly and jolly for children have to spend longer time there. Children's answers were really surprising for the scientists. They discovered the most of them didn't like clowns some of them considered clowns to be awkward and scary. The research among the adults brought the similar results. Usually they don't feel very good when they see their colored face. A Colourophobia- the panic fright of the clowns is a real disease from which such celebrity as Johny Depp suffers. However this is the extreme case, such people have their own website and meetings. For many years a clown was the synonym for entertainment and good mood. Later many novels and movies presented clowns as a negative characters, but it's difficult to say if this is the reason why people changed their perception of clowns. In spite of all facts there are still children and adults who like clowns and find them funny. It depends on individual taste of each person, but nowadays it's clear that clowns are not so popular as they used to be.

Heath Ledger will never smile again
by Barbora Misakova

I had never had such a problem to write about someone's death, but today I am really shocked. Probably every young girl and woman knows Heath Ledger, and I would say there are only few men who wouldn't know him as a star from The Patriot movie. So how shocking it must be for his loved ones and family when even I am not able clearly take this fact into consideration!? Heath Ledger was born in 1979 in the Australian city of Perth, where he also raised with his parents &mining engineer and a French teacher. There is no doubt about his talent & as 10 year-old he played in a local theater company where he got a role of Peter Pan, in the 16th year of life he started with acting in independent movies in Sydney. In the age of 19 he moved to Los Angeles and acted in "10 things I hate about you" what brought him a success and his face became famous. He looked as a new romantic type of a hero, but after this romantic comedy he refused all other offers although his agents thought he is crazy. And I have to admit he did it right. These days his name and face reminds us movies such as "A Knight's Tale", "Monster's Ball", "The Patriot" and last but not least "Brokeback mountain" which brought him a status of Mr. Actor. He chose rather independent movies, but we could see him also in "Casanova" and "The Brothers Grimm" where even if he didn't play handsome guy, his role of Jacob Grimm was managed excellently. His final finished movie is Batman where he got a role of Joker & "psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy" as Ledger himself characterized this role. At 3.30 p.m. was this 28 year-old actor found in his apartments in Manhattan dead. The massage therapist and housekeeper who found him tried to revive him, but it was too late. I don't want to write about the way his body was found, because you can read it in every other newspaper, and I don't think this information is important. Important will be only result of the autopsy which is planned for Wednesday, only then we will know why this young and life-loving man had to die. We couldn't bring him back, we couldn't help to bear the sorrow of his family, but all we can and should do is to respect the family's privacy and do not make of this tragic loss saleable article. Rest in peace Heath!

It cant work without writers.
by Zuzana Valkova

Movie is a production made by many people. Important are actors, who bring people to theaters, of course director, who is trying to manage all these people and make a good piece, and the producers, who bring money. There is hundreds of positions on the set, every person has important part in it. But Hollywood movies wouldn't exist without writers. In Europe most of the directors are also writers of their own movies, but its different in the US. These writers are incorporated in Writers Guild of America. Its organization which cares about writers and discuss the main and common issues for them. Every three years this Guild sign a new agreement with Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. This alliance includes the biggest movie studios and productions in Hollywood. But this new agreement wasn't signed last year because the studios didn't want to give authors their requirements. It was for example new media compensations, which means they would get money from the works distributed through Internet and bigger DVD residuals. I think they should get these. Its their right to get money from every single copy of their work. Another thing they wanted is that animation and reality shows writers would be covered by this agreement, because right now they aren't. Its true that reality shows should be natural, but when you pay enough attention you can see that some kind of script must be written. And thats the same thing with animation, even when the script is not a text. Many actors joined writers because they want to go back to work or just want to do good thing. Also many popular TV shows was canceled because of the strike, so now almost every American is praying for this agreement to be signed, so they can watch their shows and movies. These days writers and studios started to talk again so maybe they are near the end. Let's hope so.

Famous For Being Famous
by Kamila Moravcikova

Tired of being ordinary? Wanna change something in your life dramatically? Sure you deserve something better? Dreaming about careless high life in spotlights? The following text includes few hints how to achieve success. First of all, you have to do something eccentric. Don't be afraid to do something that should be considered overmuch. Everybody has to notice that it's you, not another fame and fortune seeking starlet. Walk almost naked in freezing cold. Attack paparazzis. Get drunk and destroy hotel room throwing out the furniture. Find yourself a scandalous lover. Get arrested. Don't wash your hair. Get yourself glamorous outfit. Some acting and musical talent is required (you just never know when there will be a change to record album or make movie). You have to have extraordinary shocking style including both clothing and haircut. Wear long hair when everybody's short-haired, wear fur-coat during summer, don't shave your legs. And you should do some drugs a little bit (and don't forget to let the whole world & by an accident, of course & that you do and it's cool). After surviving some overdoses you can go to rehab and write the bestseller about fighting your demons. But don't spend too much time getting over it! Out of sight, out of mind! You could become famous. However, nobody can guarantee how long it will last. There's a great chance you will die of overdose. And maybe the world will just find out that you are grievously untalented.

by Lenka Filipova

Kiefer Sutherland was sentenced a drunken driving charge for 30 days, and in addition to this, he was sentenced for drunken-driving from 2004 for 18 days for violating probation stemming . He did not deny any contest for drunken-driving with alcohol level over 0.08 percent over allowed standard. Sutherland confessed that he was disappointed in himself for the poor judgment he had exhibited recently, and that "I'm deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and co-workers." Officer John Balian expressed his opinion about Sutherland's stay in prison that he had paid his debt to society within 48 days, which is quite long, but Southerland accepted the sentence and with no problems he served his full time in jail. He did not require any special treatment and spent his time in jail as a model prisoner, making no troubles, cooperating in every aspect and it was known that he felt humble due to his previous behavior. He tractably accepted his duties, including 5 years probation, six-month week therapy sessions and alcohol education program for 18 months. Almost all the time was Southerland in his own, except the short common activities provided together with the rest of the prisoner, such as cleanings in the laundry or pillowcases. There were also some attempts of curious people who wanted to see him, but all of these acquisitive temptations were being looked through. He was released from jail on Monday, 12:05 at a back door near the Glendale jail's major entrance in order to avoid media.

Who did get a Golden Tomato?
by Barbora Misakova

Movies & the world of fantasy, romance, and fun is entertaining us for many years, and we all are happy every time our eyes can see something touching. For some of us is romantic movie the best way how to relax, for someone else it is movies with war theme or maybe some drama. People love to laugh so I bet there is no one who wouldn't like comedy. But the last few decades the kids are main viewer. For them plenty of fairytales but also movies were already made and as they usually can't go to the cinema alone they influence movie industry the most. As movies and their stars are in many cases our biggest heroes we want to show them our love and also demonstrate we appreciate their work. For this purpose the movie awards were made up. There is incredible number of movie awards such as Oscars or MTV Movie Awards and they all have their own rules. But these days are probably the most mentioned The Golden Tomato Awards and its 9th annual volume which pays tribute to the best-reviewed movies on RottenTomatoes.com. So let's see who the winners are. For me the biggest pleasure was that my favorite Ratatouille won with its 96 percents Golden Tomato in the category of animated movies. This sweet and edifying motion picture is about a life of one little rat who longs for becoming a chef and I don't have to explain that it is not so easy to become a chef when you are a rat. Anyway it is not only story what catches you. There are also funny dialogs and the excellent graphics which just persuade you that animated movies are still bigger concurrence for those acted ones. That's why there is no wonder that Pixar didn't satisfy only with movie industry and for the Ratatouille prepared little surprise and fun & created Ratatouille game for PS2 which is incredible too. Let's go on. You probably want to know who other winners are. So RottenTomatoes.com web site gave 98 percent ratings to "Once" for the best musical, as the best romance was awarded "Atonement", and I shouldn't forget on "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" which took Golden Tomato for science-fiction/fantasy category. But there were not given only golden tomatoes but also one moldy tomato waited for its winner & this year it was a movie "Because I said so" which was the worst-reviewed film of the previous year. Well I am incredibly curious who will win next year!

Oscar. Yes or no?
by Sandra Stoklaskova

The future of the famous show Oscar is in danger. Oscar is the second most-watched annual broadcast in the United States, after Super Bowl, with the last year audience of 40.2 million audiences. And now it is endangered. The future of this amazing show is controversial, as there was a writer's strike that has thrown the awards season into the chaos. Even though, the film fans will finally find-out, who is competing for this year's Academy Awards. A statement of Tuesday nominees included such names as Cate Blanchett, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney and Daniel Day-Lewis. The ceremony is to be held on February 24, but with the cooperation of Writers Guild of America, this plan will, perhaps, fail. Despite the fact, the academy is convinced, they are moving ahead. "We are planning to have our show on Feb. 24 at the Kodak Theatre with an audience of 3,300 people and a television audience significantly larger than that," said academy spokeswoman Leslie Unger. "It would be in the writers' best interests to come to some kind of resolution, if only temporary, so the awards could go on," said Richard Zanuck, famous producer. This dangerous strike of writers has already took down the second biggest film honors The Golden Globe, so we just have to wait will see, how the things will develop.

And the Tomato goes to…
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Not as prestigious as the Oscars, nonetheless annual Golden Tomato Awards are quite a juicy piece for movie addicts as they search through print, online and broadcast critics to find the film which got the best reviews in general. And what news did the 9th annual Golden Tomato Awards bring? Well, let's have a look…a Pixar animated rat and Irish singing romance basically swept away everything else. "Ratatouille" being a story of little rat whose biggest dream is to become a chef got almost to 100 percent on site's Tomatometer. And the movie "Once" was even more successful winning the best musical and best limited release category. Best Romance saw its winner in "Atonement" starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, while agent Bourne with face of Matt Damon came to dominate the action/adventure category with "The Bourne Ultimatum", last movie of the series. If you wonder about the science fiction/fantasy category, no surprise there..yeah, you guessed it right, "Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix". Of course there are other good movies fit to win this category, breathtaking sci-fi "Sunshine" for example, but it seems Harry won the hearts of many. Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez can be proud parents, because their "baby" "Grindhouse" got the best horror flick. And finally, the least pleasing of the Golden Tomato Awards The Moldy Tomato went to comedy "Because I Said So" with Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore.

The Sundance Film festival
by Tatiana Hadarova

The Sundance Film Festival, held annually since 1978 in Utah has always been known in its home country and also abroad as the largest independent film festival in the US. The main purpose of its founders (Sterling Van Wagenen, Charles G. Allison and Robert Redford) was to make this film festival as a premier showcase for new work from American and also from international independent film makers. In mid 80's festival came through some financial difficulties, but since the Sundance Institute has been formed, Robert Redford has become a symbolic chairperson and its move from late summer to mid winter has been done, the Sundance Film Festival started to grow away. Many of independent film makers, including Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino or Jim Jarmusch had their breakthrough at Sundance and this festival also helped to bring wider attraction to film such as The Blair Witch Project, Sex, lies and videotape, El Mariachi or Clerks. Over the decades the festival has grown from the "low-profile venue" for small budget, independent creators outside the Hollywood system to a big commercial media show connected with celebrities, paparazzi and luxuries. Fortunately, in recent years the management of the Sundance tries to distance from all these distractions and would like to form the festival into what it used to be by pushing the filmmakers, as well as festival goers to "focus on film".

'Cloverfield' movie takes success
by Daniela Simkova

The movie scene hosted an amazing movie hit, which was the first product of the film industry for the 2008. The movie called 'Cloverfield' had taken the audience from the very begining. The official trailer was that good, that we would think that movie can't be better than its trailer. Mr. Rob Moore, a Paramount vice chairman lead us out of the wrong impression and stated: „As we started it, we asked, how do we draw people in and have them say, `Hey, I want to know more about that. That looked cool, that looked intriguing.' Then fortunately, they delivered a movie that was as unique and engaging as people had hoped from the marketing campaign." 'Cloverfield' is a tate about a monster, which causes a chaos and perplexity in the New York City. A story is to be seen from the record of the partygoer's camera as it makes mess in the city of New York. The benefit lied in the scavenger hunt. It was a marketing way of getting wider audience and spread new movie into the world. A group of young moviegoers had to decode everything about the movie, its title, plot and images. We can't skip the fact that title 'Cloverfield' haven't been confirmed until shortly before its release.

In memoriam
by Claudia Sonea

The late ‘60s were successful for most singers with burning desire to conquer fame and with something to state to the troubled generation. However few resisted in charts and even fewer managed to leave a memorable impression upon people, a legacy that would last in time. As one of the fewer, Janis Joplin managed to conquer hearts, to state her experience, although that she departed too early, at the age of only 27 years. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Joplin #46 on their list of the 50 Greatest Artists of All Time. She began singing in the local choir and listening to musicians such as Leadbelly, Bessie Smith, Odetta, and Big Mama Thornton. The campus newspaper of University of Texas where she attended courses ran a profile of her in 1962 headlined "She Dares To Be Different". She left Texas for San Francisco seeking affirmation. The fame came starting 1967 when she released an album called "Summer of Love" with the band Big Brother and the Holding Company. At the Monterey International Pop Festival she performed her version of blues singer Big Mama Thornton's "Ball and Chain" and received standing ovations. Unfortunately her drug and alcohol abuse led to the lost of an amazing singer, songwriter and person. Although her performance was not included in the documentary film Woodstock, nor on the album released shortly after, she will remain in people's memory and people still go to her house in cheering her name. On Saturday she would have celebrated her 65th birthday, if she wouldn't have died due to a drug overdose on Oct. 4, 1970. She liked singing and the thrill that the stage offered her and she always tried to take contact with the audience and asked them: "how you doin' ". Her short life is an example and most people will remember her. At the gathering that commemorated her in front of one of her houses Monteel Copple, a childhood friend, says he will never forget her laugh and we won't forget her either. Now she's singing with the angels, may God have mercy on her soul! Farewell, Janis…

Star Wars finally surpassed
by Martina Harvanova

Don't you think any movie couldn't outpace Star Wars? This time, you are absolutely wrong. In one parameter one lately released movie did it. Records in box offices throughout the United States unveil the fact that with an estimated $41 million gross (so far!) one movie has already succeeded in surpassing such groundbreaking shots like Star Wars, Along Came Polly or Snakes on a Plane. It is Cloverfield. The first monster hit released in 2008 has managed to reach this level just during the weekend. The numbers are predicted to become even more smashing due to the long weekend in the U.S. as well as after adding international views and grosses. What kind of a hit is this when it can stun the masses? It is a Paramount's tale of a giant reptile causing chaos in New York City, a classic monster movie, one would say. Added value of Mark Reeves' Cloverfield is a post-September 11 allegory. For 18-34-year-olds with preferences in familiar stories with exciting new trappings the latest hit seems to work in a perfect way. Estimated ticket sales for Jan, 18th-20th recognizes that $41-million Cloverfield is followed by 27 Dresses with the gross of $22.4 and The Bucket List ($15.2 million) on the third spot. Surprising fact that so far the viewers have ranked the movie with quite poor CinemaScore grade of C sketches the possible success of Cloverfield: blossom in the short term of a long weekend, but shaking position in the long run. Simple explanation is a great marketing of the project. The movie benefits from marketing aimed at young moviegoers. Its target is to make them fancy decoding the clues about the movie's plot. "As we started it, we asked, how do we draw people in and have them say, ‘Hey, I want to know more about that. That looked cool, that looked intriguing,"' said Rob Moore, Paramount vice chairman. "Then fortunately, they delivered a movie that was as unique and engaging as people had hoped from the marketing campaign." And that is, basically, the entire issue of the Cloverfield's success. Generally known fact, that selling means much more than producing, works as a perfect demonstration in this case. Without great marketing plans the movie wouldn't win such popularity.

TV transmission available wholly on-line
by Martina Harvanova

A plan expressed by co-president Eric Kessler to "enhance the value of the HBO subscription by giving viewers greater access to our content" is the latest proclamation of the popular and still more demanded TV channel, if we in fact can qualify it with this label. HBO has decided to be available literally for anyone anytime. The competitors evolve and grow constantly and HBO can possibly face difficulties with providing transmission "just" to your television device. In 2001 introduced product called HBO On Demand has contributed to the cooler and fresher look of the broadcast provider, however, HBO wants more. Currently, its goal is to dazzle the potential customers with its HBO On Broadband. The new product of the pay-cable network is based on offering even broader selection of programming while users can program their computers to allow them download new movies or episodes. As all the new inventions also this one has a certain loss. To gain access, you must be a digital cable customer who subscribes to HBO, and you must use your cable company as your Internet provider. So far, HBO has offered only a limited amount of programming provided on-line, such as iTunes podcasts or its own website where viewers can watch clips or sample episodes. Through the HBO On Broadband the network tweaks its service as well as its wide reputation as a modern broadcaster aimed on those who require high quality of entertainment not intended for masses. With this new offer a question emerges, how the market segment is going to look like. As affirmed, the service will most appeal to business travelers who want to watch HBO on the road and younger viewers. The tendency of this group is taking the line of watching more TV through the PCs. Therefore, HBO On Broadband is designed to keep subscribers from pulling the plug. The issue consequently sounds whether we are ready to slowly abandon the traditional way of getting TV entertainment. Maybe nowadays it doesn't look like we are heading to the trend of watching every transmission on-line, but in the future it tends to be always more possible. Furthermore, it seems to get preferred by all of us.

Televízne vysielanie prístupné výlučne on-line
by Martina Harvanova

Plán vyslovený co-prezidentom Ericom Kesslerom „zvýšiÅ¥ hodnotu predplatného na kanáli HBO tak, aby mali diváci lepší prístup k nášmu obsahu" je najnovÅ¡ie vyhlásenie populárneho a stále viac žiadaného televízneho kanála, ak ho vôbec môžeme označiÅ¥ touto nálepkou. HBO sa rozhodlo byÅ¥ prístupným doslova vÅ¡etkým a vÅ¡ade. Konkurencia sa neustále vyvíja a zdokonaľuje a HBO by mohlo čeliÅ¥ problémom s poskytovaním vysielania „iba" prostredníctvom televíznych prijímačov. Produkt z dielne HBO s názvom HBO On Broadband (Å irokopásmové HBO) predstavený v roku 2001 prispel k modernejÅ¡iemu a živÅ¡iemu vzhľadu tohto poskytovateľa vysielania, avÅ¡ak HBO chce viac. V súčasnosti je jeho cieľom ohúriÅ¥ svojich potenciálnych zákazníkov so svojím HBO On Demand.

by Ivana Bruderova

HBO bude nasledovaÅ¥ spoločnosÅ¥ Apple a vstúpi na preplnený internetový trh s videom. Predplatitelia HBO si budú môcÅ¥ sÅ¥ahovaÅ¥ filmy a televízne programy cez internet. Služba nazvaná HBO Broadband bude poskytovaná zdarma ako doplnok k programom HBO a HBO on Demand a môže pomôcÅ¥ znížiÅ¥ počet ľudí ruÅ¡iacich zmluvy hlavne pri programe HBO on Demand. Predplatitelia si budú môcÅ¥ vybraÅ¥ z knižnice bohatej na tituly, stiahnuÅ¥ ich, uložiÅ¥ do svojho počítača či notebooku a takto si vziaÅ¥ svoje obľúbené pogramy kamkoľvek so sebou. HBO on Broadband bude dostupný pre zákazníkov vysoko rýchlostného internetu v Green Bay a Milwaukee, v Å¡táte Wisconsin. ZvyÅ¡ok U.S.A si bude musieÅ¥ počkaÅ¥, keďže spoločnosÅ¥ nemá stanovený žiadny časový rozvrh v ktorom by chcela rozšíriÅ¥ slubu aj do ostatných Å¡tátov.

Glitter Or Gold?
by Kamila Moravcikova

First of all, I hired fitness instructor to get in shape. I'd been on diet for a months. I found perfect fitting fabulous gown that emphasized my qualities and covered my weaknesses (even though one may ask whether there are any). I bought matching jewelry that lighted up the room and completed my outfit. I purchased amazing high-heeled shoes that were comfortable and looked amazing in the same time. I got my nails, hair and make-up done. I properly prepared my acceptance speech. It was funny, it was witty, I didn't forget to mention anyone I wanted not to, it was really unusual, unforgettable, unique speech with deeper context saying thank you in very original way. And it didn't last more than given 45 seconds. I was practicing it every single day. I also rehearsed some unaffected smile a natural behavior (no big deal I was the greatest actress that have ever lived!). Finally, I was prepared, anxiously awaiting the day I would hear "And the Oscar goes to"... ME and all those envious stares. I was ready to fascinate everybody on the red carpet with sophisticated combination of beauty and intelligence, enter the stage and take what was mine. With nonchalance, of course. And then the horrible news came. It broke my heart and ruined my world. There would not be any Academy Awards this year. How would all those ordinary people know who is the best and distinguish between glitter and gold?

Obituaries for young celebrities?
by Sandra Stoklaskova

When people, especially celebrities, die after long, considerable and challenging career, the stories of their lives appear everywhere around us, mostly on the web sites and in the press. This is what happened also now. No one died, but the fact that The Associated Press has prepared an obituary for 26-year-old Britney Spears, developed the wave of discussions about reporting death. “It is a complex issue, a complex debate”, says Washington Post reporter Adam Bernstein. The question is: Should news organizations prepare the obituaries for celebrities under 30, living dangerous lives? The answer to this question can be very controversial..But if yes, should this be about their weird behavior on public? Or on the other hand should it reflects their real accomplishment? This can be really a very mooting issue. In solving this we can not forget about the names such as Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan who are more famous because of their bizarre behavior in oppose to the celebrities successful thanks for their talents. We have to noticed, that there is a growing interest of public in anything what young people does, and if it is some scandal, even more.”There is much more pressure to get this news out right now”, said former publicist Michael Levine. “You distribute or you die”, he added.

Is Apple going to engage in a music subscription service?
by Lenka Filipova

Steve Jobs bears a difficult task to solve nowadays. As Apple has reached the peak in the iPod business, there is a matter to solve to what extent Apple should have influence on the approach to wireless music. In fact, it is dealing with the task whether to join with musical rentals or not. If he decides to do so, Apple will provide all iPods with the system that will set the time limit to music content. In another words, it will work similarly as a music subscription service. It will result in installing a temper-proof clock that will erase the content after the time of expiration. Obviously, it has its pros as well as cons. On one hand, it seems to be a great opportunity to download the music you really like and what is more there is a certain evidence of the music genuineness. Moreover, it is a clear signal for the music industry that helps it to recognize what kind of music people really like to listen to. On the other hand, it has been found out that people do not consider this as very attractive way. Consequently, they do not show any interest if the music they downloaded can "disappear" because he music is not about the content that can be listen only once but there is a need to listen to it regularly as it has many effects on peoples' mood and behavior. The rest does not pay attention too as it has nothing to do with their very favorite iPod. In addition to this, there exists possibility to download music from Apple at 99 cent (or even for free with Limewire), hence there will be only a slight benefit from subscriptions. Thus, it is all in Mr. Jobs' hand whether Apple will introduce the subscription service to its iPods.

by Daniela Simkova

All of us can watch movie awards every single year. This brilliant event has become a tradition in the film production. The best movies are awarded and their actors and actress are proud that they had an opportunity to play in that movie. The year of 2007 had been plentiful of the great comedies, historic movies, documentaries, animated films, various episodes or tales with the crime motives. Producers Guild of America announced the movie nominees for the 2007. In a row of films waiting for the best film award are a movie with crime motive "No Country for Old Men," comedy "Juno" and movie with historical motive "There Will Be Blood." The ceremony of the Movie awards will take time on February 2nd. Amongst the animated movies are "The Simpson's Movie," "Bee Movie," and "Ratatouille" the leading ones. We can also mention the nominees for the documentary movies of various thematic motives from the reality: "Sicko," "Body of War," "Hear and now," "Pete Seeger: The Power of Song," and "White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki." There are few more TV brunches in which are other nominees competing for the awards. We could mention long-form television, episodic drama, episodic comedy, non-fiction television and TV live entertainment-competition.
