The lust for painting - Will for life for a Haiti artist
by Zivka Deleva
This January a terrible and catastrophic earthquake happened on Haiti. The Haitian government reported that an estimated 230,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless. It was big and horrible stroke for humanity. Many people, many counties took place in helping and dealing with the problem. Sorrow and sadness is felt in Haiti even today, 10 months after this accident. But another different and happy story is surrounding the world these days. Kesner Salvent, a 26-year old painter, who survived the earthquake after being buried alive under a tumbled building, showed the world that has an iron will. He spent the last ten months in rehabilitatio! n centers first in Atlanta and than in Maine. He had serious injuries on the spinal cord which caused him problems with his arms and legs. He didn’t know if he will be able to walk or paint again. He was brought to USA for surgery and that was actually his first time to go out from Haiti. He didn’t speak any English at all and didn’t have any family around him. But he had a goal to make himself better and worked really hard on that. Today his fine motor coordination isn’t good enough yet and still needs months of work, but he is prepared on everything as long as he can go back to his biggest love- the painting. Kesner’s case is very inspiring and it makes us thankful for everything that we have. Keep on going Kesner Salvent!!!
