The world is not in crises for art
by Zivka Deleva

If you are very rich and you are fond of art, there is no place elsewhere you should be, but in the Swiss city Basel, where the biggest art market in the world exists. The four day fair accepts 60,000 artists, collectors, gallery’s representatives and art lovers who come once in the year to sell and buy. Private jets fly over the sky of Basel. According to the first announcement and impressions, it seems like the developed world slowly but surely recovers from the world’s recession. If we judge by the auctions that have happened in the last few months, when art d’oeuvres have been sold for millions of dollars, we might expect that a lot money are going to! be spent on the art these days. Around three hundred world’s galleries came to represent over 2,000 artist from all the meridians. The main remark is that like in every pore from the social living the globalization takes more and more space, the artists are not out of this process. More and more artists show global attitude. There is no form of art expression that you can’t find in the fair. You have paintings, sculptures, installations, performances and video art. And, as expected, the prices travel from thousands of dollars for not very well known artists to millions of green papers for the well accredited artists. The public will have the chance to be close to few pieces of art which were sold for tremendous prices in the last few months – like a triptych by Francis Bacon which was bought for $86.3 million, or canvases from Murakami Takashi, or Pop-art stars Robert Rauschenberg and Tom Wesselman. “Thanks” to the few big thieveries from! the beginning of the year, the insurance companies now have m! ore job to do and a lot more money to earn. Allianz Suisse insurance company is excited that their work has increased for 30 percent.

L'industrie rêvée
by Claudia Sonea

The dream industry
by Claudia Sonea

An entertainment for children has become a 1 million business success. One of the most popular European comics is The Adventures of Tintin and the main character a young Belgian reporter thrilled millions of children all over the world. But who could have imagined that one day a memorabilia of the Belgian cartoon series will worth 1 million euros? Collectors are very meticulous persons and they would spend even their last cent just to add another item to their precious collections. Tintin, the comic strip of the Belgian artist Georges Rémi, has become a fixation for many people and thus many Tintin collecto! rs started to appear looking for items related to the reporter and his white dog. The hunt targets a large area of items, from cars to supporting characters, coins, stamps, and others and the value seems to have increased in time. This week in Paris an auction presented 230 items from about 70 collectors and took by surprise the Hergé Foundation that tries to keep under control the license through Moulinsart. The items existence was unknown up to now to the foundation that carries on Herge’s legacy. The auction total sales were slightly above one million euros and impressed everybody as two years ago 600 items were sold and barely reached 1.2 million euros. Collectors are not the only ones that bring popularity to the comic series. There is a chain of stores selling goods related to Tintin and even coffee shops. We may grow up and become adults worrying for tomorrow, but inside we will always be small ch! ildren enjoying our toys.

In memoriam
by Claudia Sonea

Humanity is frail and time is the worst enemy. In spite of being created after God’s image, our body is nothing but a frail package that in time deteriorates. The sad part of the cycle of life is that sometimes the body is not as strong as the soul residing inside and people leave this world too soon. However, death is not the end; it is a new beginning for the soul that is set free. Gary Coleman passed away last week, setting free a troubled soul to finally find the sublime peace. Life was harsh with the former child star Gary Coleman who suffered from an autoimmune disease that affected hi! s kidneys and stopped his growth. Nonetheless, he refused to give up and tried to have a normal life. Together with the role of Arnold Jackson in the TV series "Diff'rent Strokes", came fame and money. Everyone loved him and recognized him; he was invited as a guest to a lot of TV shows and his luck seemed to have changed. But Hollywood is cruel and if you are not strong enough to resist to its force you get eaten. After the show ended, Coleman lost much of his popularity and his work remained mainly unknown to the big public. From the famous actor, he ended up being a security guard and his attempts to a career in politics proved unsuccessful. The outcome was not surprising as anyone would have had a hard time dealing with rapid fall. Gary Coleman left this life, but his soul was set free from all the restrains of the flesh. He is now enchanting God and the angels together with other sparking star! s that left this world, like Peter Graves, Lynn Redgrave. Let ! us keep a moment of peace and pray for their souls..

Second Eurovision win for Germany
by Zuzana Zelenakova

In 55 year history of Eurovision Song Contest Germany claimed its second victory in Oslo, Norway. It seems European people liked the best Germany´s Lena performing song called Satellite. Second place went to Turkey and third to Romania. Thirty-nine countries participated this year in Norway, home of last year´s winner Alexander Rybak. Although some could argue there were better songs than Lena´s Satellite, 19-year-old German undisputedly captured the audience with her youthful energy and vigor. "This is so absolutely awesome. I feel that this is not real," said young singer whose full name is Lena Mayer-Landrut. "I'm kind of freaking out. This feels incredib! ly good." With Lena´s victory, Germany became the first Big Four country to win Eurovisio. Big Four include United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain. In 2000, it was ruled that the Big Four countries, being the biggest contributors to the EBU which ensures the production of the Eurovision Contest automatically qualify for the final regardless of their previous scores. When it comes to the voting system it was a fifty-fifty combination of national jury and televoting. The favorite for this year´s contest was Azerbaijan with its Safura and ballad Drip Drop. A curious moment occurred when a fan jumped on stage during the performance of Spanish contestant Daniel Diges, who was given a second chance due to the disruption. With the ongoing economic crisis in Europe several countries were forced to withdraw from the contest, including Montenegro, Andorra, Czech Republic and Hungary. The Eurovision Song Contest came into being in the 50s, when the European Broadcasting U! nion was looking for ways to ease the post war atmosphere on t! he old c ontinent. The first Eurovision Contest took place in Lugano, Switzerland in 1956 with only seven countries participating. Among the most notable winners of the Eurovision Song Contest we can find ABBA, Celine Dion or Katrina and the Waves.

Spider sculptures artist Louise Bourgeois died at 98
by Zivka Deleva

The author of the international known sculptures of big spiders, French-American artist Louise Bourgeois died at the age of 98 in New York City, from a heart attack. This legendary woman born in Paris was the most known for her spiders, drawings, books, sculptures, the most. She has very often been not well understood, but she has inspired her masterpieces from her childhood. Influence on the story that her had his father that cheated on her mother with her governess and her mother didn’t admit that ever. Louiseb Bourgeois was born on December 25, 1911 in Paris. The sculpture is the best art form she knows how to express herself. She worked in rubber, wood, stone, met! al, and fabrics, as well. Her fascination of the spiders she showed since the 1940’s, but the best pieces on that subject, she has made at the period from 1994 to 2003. Her most famous sculpture definitely is Maman. It is funny, but Bourgeois became very popular at late age, and influenced young especially female artists. Her sculptures were sexually explicit, but one thing is for sure, that she treated only few themes in her pieces, focusing on the human body, its’ need for nurture, but protection at the same time from the scary world, as New York Times reported. She has often been named as a feminist among the authors. In 1993, Bourgeois was the United States representative in the Venice Biennale. Pain has often been mentioned as a subject of her art. On that, she once said: “The subject of pain is the business I am in, to give meaning and shape to frustration and suffering. The existence of pain cannot be denied. I propose no remedies or excuses.R! 21; Now, definitely her pain is gone. Rest in peace!

Hopper's Easy Rider
by Milota Sidorova

When it comes to acting and actors, there is this problem of type acting. Well, at least there are not many actors who can extend their skills beyond one life role. But some are trying, inspite of well paid stereotypical role casting. We have heard that Dennis Hopper died last week. Slightly after his 74th birthday he died of prostata cancer. But this is not important. Let me ask you, who was Dennis Hopper? How do you remeber him? Do you even remeber him? For a younger mass generation, the right answer would be, barely yes. But for the majority, Hopper would be simply Billy, Easy Rider, who along with Peter Fonda's Wyatt character “blew it”. He would remain as a! free traveler, a nihilist, a person fighting system or a member of hippie generation (perceived by those who weren't hippies and didn't understand them).Although Hopper cast many other roles, Billy probably stuck up to him, creating his alter ego. Till the end of his career he played dark characters villains or negative personas. His star brightly shone twice more times in Coppola's Apocalypso now (playing a photojournalist somewhere between sanity and insanity) and David Lynch's Blue Velvet (playing very similar kind of role). From that time on, Hopper was perceived as a bad boy, not being hard to employ, but shadowed by his personal ups and downs. His media image was covered by drugs and wild marriages, but inside he proved to be a strong fighter being able to stop the drugs and regain his reputation of a brilliant actor.Last decades he won several Academy prizes and nominations, such as he was invited to Hollywoood's hall of Fame. Luckily for him, he was able to get rid! of rumors and focused on his work. Because work counts and th! e work m akes the history. Especially in the times fed with bulvar.Although there is no more life for Hopper, his work is going to live, inspiring upcoming generations.
