Second Eurovision win for Germany
by Zuzana Zelenakova
In 55 year history of Eurovision Song Contest Germany claimed its second victory in Oslo, Norway. It seems European people liked the best Germany´s Lena performing song called Satellite. Second place went to Turkey and third to Romania. Thirty-nine countries participated this year in Norway, home of last year´s winner Alexander Rybak. Although some could argue there were better songs than Lena´s Satellite, 19-year-old German undisputedly captured the audience with her youthful energy and vigor. "This is so absolutely awesome. I feel that this is not real," said young singer whose full name is Lena Mayer-Landrut. "I'm kind of freaking out. This feels incredib! ly good." With Lena´s victory, Germany became the first Big Four country to win Eurovisio. Big Four include United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain. In 2000, it was ruled that the Big Four countries, being the biggest contributors to the EBU which ensures the production of the Eurovision Contest automatically qualify for the final regardless of their previous scores. When it comes to the voting system it was a fifty-fifty combination of national jury and televoting. The favorite for this year´s contest was Azerbaijan with its Safura and ballad Drip Drop. A curious moment occurred when a fan jumped on stage during the performance of Spanish contestant Daniel Diges, who was given a second chance due to the disruption. With the ongoing economic crisis in Europe several countries were forced to withdraw from the contest, including Montenegro, Andorra, Czech Republic and Hungary. The Eurovision Song Contest came into being in the 50s, when the European Broadcasting U! nion was looking for ways to ease the post war atmosphere on t! he old c ontinent. The first Eurovision Contest took place in Lugano, Switzerland in 1956 with only seven countries participating. Among the most notable winners of the Eurovision Song Contest we can find ABBA, Celine Dion or Katrina and the Waves.
