The last Goodbye
by Claudia Sonea

Since before I was born, Celine Dion's name was on everybody's lips. The famous Canadian singer (occasionally songwriter and actress), Celine Dion has succeeded to break the language borders and also to become the "Best-selling Female Artist in the World", according to the prize (Chopard Diamond Award) she received in 2004 at the World Music Awards show due to 175 million albums sold worldwide. Unfortunately, she decided to step down and enjoy being a mother for her son Rene-Charles, while the music stage and the fans lost an extraordinary voice. Celine found out in 2000 at the age of 39 that she was pregnant and told her manager, who is also her husband, Rene Angelil that she did not want to continue. She wanted to be a mother more than anything else and that was why she wanted to commit entirely to her son. Nevertheless, Rene pointed out that a lot of money and people were involved in her five-year engagement, only the Colosseum would have cost them $95 million, while the initial contract of $100 million broke records for a live entertainer. So she had to hold on tight and go on with the show. In March 2003 she opened the show "A new day…" that brought her $400 million dollars and 3 million fans. For the final show that she held in Las Vegas at Caesar Palace the tickets were sold on eBay for as much as $1899 and it was probably the best show ever where Celine invited on stage her husband and her son. During the extra-long finale she sang the title song of her first English-language album in 4 years, "Taking chances", which was considered to be the 12th best-selling album, reveals Billboard magazine. She will be replaced at Caesars by Bette Midler with "The showgirl must go on", starting February 20. Such a great loss for megalomaniacs, but such a great win for humanity. Celine is the embodiment of motherhood and who knows, people might actually follow her example and understand that celebrity they adore, there is person with feeling just like theirs. At the end she confesses that she looking forward to being just a mommy. Good luck Celine, you will discover that is the hardest thing ever!

Food-related Christmas
by Martina Harvanova

The most beautiful feast of the year is definitely in front of us. Christmas should be deemed a holiday of peace, love, happiness and understanding among each other. However, everybody can see it is heading somewhere else. People tend to complain about all the marketing and commercial flavor of Christmas. Well, this time of the year would not be such a colossal business, if we did not allow it to happen, if we did not give up under the pressure of merchants. I don' t want it to sound like I am absolutely for this commercial Christmas-activity, but I can say I fully understand that. The major matter why I think this way is the fact that we adore Christmas as a holiday when we can do all the stuff we usually don't. And among other things, food is one of the most popular reasons of our love to X-mas. Moreover, we are used to try as hard as we can to make our best when cooking the festive dish. One of the possible solutions is to ask for advice of the most capable of all. The distinguished chef. In this case we are talking about one of the best ones & Heston Blumenthal. Heston Blumenthal has been described as a culinary alchemist for his innovative style of cuisine. Currently, he is running his own restaurant The Fat Duck as well as a television program. And for all that, he likes to share his knowledge and experiences with the amateur cooks. Especially before Christmas he answers questions about the best thinkable meal on the table. For instance, he advices to use olive oil instead of goose fat to pour the bird while roasting. He likes to prepare vegetables and similar things before the Christmas Eve to prevent needless rush. And one his magic ideas is to take the turkey out of oven for hour and half before serving. The taste will be much better. And at last, one of his advice is not to see Christmas as a stressful day because of all the preparing. And he is absolutely right. Even though Christmas Eve is considered a nerve-racking day, everybody still wants it to be perfect. One of the things we all like the most about it is the delicious food. And there is nothing wrong about it. We all should enjoy it and make the most of it. Maybe also with the advices like these.

Cheer up! Christmas coming!
by Ludmila Martinicka

Not to everybody brings Christmas time joy and happiness. This holiday can put you also in a deep depression. When you don't find your Christmas spirit enthusiastic enough, when presents you prepared for your friends and family relatives seems not be good enough, when there is not enough snow around, when there is no Christmas tree in the house just green branches, when... Sometimes it is enough to watch not very happily directed Christmas fairy tale and your Christmas spirit is death. Media has strong influence on the human mind. On the first look innocent fairy tale can hide motives of aggression, hate, cruel behavior. For adult spectator it doesn't create a big problem. He has his own mind formed. The mind of a child can't differentiate what is good, what is bad, what is real and what fiction. You should set the program of your Christmas properly before. May be some family activities, finally you have time to spend together as a family. Make some sport, go for a walk, enjoy the Christmas atmosphere. It would be better than looking at the TV screen. Some parts of TV program is not for those, which are delighted about Christmas. It is designed as a balm for those who feel sad in the Christmas season. Don't forget about other cheering up winter activities. You can organize a snowball fight, build a snowmen, or, if you are an artistic person, build a dinosaur or whatever else what comes to your mind at the Christmas time. Merry Christmas!

The number of repeats has increased over the Christmas
by Daniela Simkova

As the Christmas time is coming, we can expect our favorite TV shows, movies, and fairy tales on TV. These special repeats can be seen on TV just over the Christmas time, because they are of Christmas spirit. Not only children are very pleased to watch the beautiful fairy tales, but also their parents. It evokes in us a special family rest and we all feel very happy. But are all of us satisfied in watching Christmas programs? The Liberal Democrats have focused on calculating the number of repeats and they found out that the number of repeats increased by 25 percent over a three day Christmas holiday. 80 percent of shows for children have been already shown. Mr. Don Foster, a Liberal Democrat culture spokesman, said: "As channels dish up yet more of the same old Christmas fare , it's not surprising that viewers are turned off by Christmas TV." Channel Five was the worst in Christmas repeats, because the program was made up from the old shows and movies. People just don't like to watch old shows. The TV channel that haven't increased the number of Christmas repeats was the Channel 4. But do people want to overpass the movies with Christmas spirit? The viewers want to see mostly classic movies and shows. It reminds them mostly of the nice moments with family. The BBC spokesman stated: "We are very happy to be able to offer viewers the chance to see some of the BBC's best programs again over the holiday period - our research shows that viewers really appreciate this."

Rain drives off the parade
by Claudia Sonea

For the late 57 years in a town called Escondido from San Diego County, California, there has always been a Christmas parade held just 2 weeks before Christmas. It is something that involves the whole town and people really look forward to it every year. Unfortunately, this year, for the first time, the parade will be canceled due rainy weather, according to the officials' statement on Saturday. On the Escondido Junior Chamber of Commerce's Web site a parade update post explains why it has been canceled in the last minute. Organizers said that rescheduling the parade for either of the two remaining weekends before Christmas was impractical for a number of reasons like the fact that notifying residents affected by street closures along the parade route would be difficult. Also, it would be quite difficult to get the permits needed from Caltrans to close state Route 78 or to get enough volunteers for traffic control on short notice. Some participants already had dismantled their floats, according to the organizers called The Jaycees. At all these reasons the concerns that many of the high school bands that had been scheduled to perform would not be able to attend because of previous commitments is added. All the decisions were taken after a meeting on Tuesday night where all the 25 members of the organization group talked and the Police Chief Jim Maher presented that the weather forecast show heavy rains that could led to traffic and safety problems. However, the rain ended before 9 am and the streets were empty and sad. Nevertheless, people should enjoy Christmas. Merry Christmas to you all and a happy New Year!

Christmas Carol tapping this year
by Zuzana Moravcova

A tap dance version of a Christmas carol theme suggested by the Charles Dickens in 1843 is going to entertain Broadway's audience. Anacrucis Modern Tap Dance, a teaching and producing enterprise, is now for the seventh time going to perform "A Tap Dance Christmas Carol : An Original Tap Dance Musical" this weekend at Broadway Performance Hall. Tap dance, formerly called jazz dance, was develped in the United States during the nineteenth century and is popular nowadays in many parts of the world. This lively, rhythmic tapping makes the performer not just a dancer, but also a percussive musician. Tap was the main performance dance of Broadway around 1950. The choreography was made by Johnson and Peters, who dance together as well as run their enterprises. "For years we were doing tap dancing with no narrative or plot or story for our Christmas show but decided we wanted to do something different. There is very little that is not tap dance, with songs and live music added," they said. The tale is told in "the language of tap dance, music, song and poetry." It also features Peters dancing the three ghosts and the company co-director Cheryl Johnson playing Ebenizia Scrooge, a merciless businesswoman. The performance features also Tiny Tim's snappy ukulele solo celebrating his reccuperation from lameness. All the tap dances and ghosts are accompanied by a live jazz combo.

Caviar menaces us again
by Martina Harvanova

In 1996 a warning occurred claiming that if nothing is done in the next 15 to 20 years, the world's population of species people are using to produce caviar will face possible extinction. How does the situation look like currently? Already in the past most of the world' s countries refused import of caviar as long as a sustainable version of the exclusive food won' t be offered. The high-quality beluga caviar is still being sold on the black market though. And the latest news say the delicate dish is again on the shelves of the UK chain Waitrose following its competitors Caviar House, Masion Prunier and the exclusive food halls of Selfridges and Harrods. The fact is that 90 percent of the world' s caviar supply comes from Caspian Sea and there are three most sought sturgeon species - beluga, stellate sturgeon and Russian sturgeon & which are being killed when producing caviar. All of them are on the list of animals that face a ''very high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future.'' Although the rate of caviar consumption isn' t that high and it is generally known that there are only privileged gourmets among the consumers that can afford it, the danger is still menacing. Surveys say there is a 45 percent decline particularly in beluga sturgeon populations between years 2004 to 2005. Personally, I consider it right when the world-leading nations care about the nature and meet the needed arrangements to improve it. However, according to the recent information, not a lot has changed. Despite the warning about the sturgeon extinction in the next two decades, we did not learn anything. We are still threatening our planet and nature. Nothing has got better. There are only words, but no action.

New films vs. films seen before
by Dominika Nagyova

These times the film industry is producing many pictures that can capture both film critics and public, entertain them and let them think about the story. First of all, there is a thriller about sociopath Anton Chicurh "No Country for Old Man" and picture "There Will Be Blood", which are highly appreciating by Film critics. Another one is called "The Great Debaters" supported by Oprah Winfrey's affection that can keep this picture on public. Also "Charlie Wilson's War" can be interesting for public because of famous movie stars like Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. Unfortunately, those movies are not as original as movies made before. For an example, "The Great Debaters" based on true story show us a Professor Melvin Tolson (Denzel Washigton) trying to made a debate team from underdog students. He is criticized for his unusual teaching methods and political opinions. It can be compared with "The Dangerous Minds" from 1995, where a teacher of literature performed by Michelle Pfeifer get a class of bad students. She prepares themselves for life after school and helps them with leaving exams. This is only one example about friendship between teacher and students and about teacher's hard work to unit teenagers of the same social class. To sum up, nowadays pictures are full of emotions, blood, digital tricks and illusions, but the stories are not changing and we can watch movie about the same like 50 years before.

Led Zeppelin rocking the scene again
by Zuzana Moravcova

The British gods of the 70's rock music scene came to perform an incredible show after years at the London's O2 Arena on November 26th. Having been approached by the widow of Ahmet Ertegun, the late record company executive, who signed the band in 1968, to organize a tribute concert, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin â€" Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones, also with Jason Bonham, son of the former drummer John Bonham, assembled in a studio in June and decided to perform a two-hour reunion concert in few months. The show featured warm-up contributions from Billy Wyman's Rhythm Stars, Pete Townshend, Foreigner and Paolo Nutini. The fans were blown away when the lead singer, Robert Plant, 59, kicked off this eagerly anticipated gig singing "Good Times Bad Times". A grey-haired Jimmy Page, 63, reminded the world why he has been considered one of the world guitar greats, while John Paul Jones, 61, showed his versatility jumping from bass to keyboards. Instead of the former drummer of the band, John Bonham, who died in 1980 after a drinking binge, his son Jason Bonham completed the formation on drums. Led Zeppelin played the most amazing masterpieces such as "Stairway to Heaven," "Kashmir" and "Whole Lotta Love" as passionately as less known tracks "In My Time of Dying" and "For Your Life," which they played live for the first time. According to many fans, Led Zeppelin sounded even better than in their hell-raising heyday of the 1970s, which was, regarding their qualities, hard to imagine anyway.

Universal Music's deal with imeem
by Ivana Mikusova

Universal Music Group has joined the other tree major record labels which have already signed a licensing deal with social networking Web site operator imeem inc. This is a great thing which lets all users to upload and stream music and music videos for free. It was quite a necessary step forward because nowadays people don't buy CD's; they just download the songs or videos which they want. Why pay for it? They do it illegally. These are the facts. Everybody knows that this is happening. Recording companies do as well. This causes that the revenues of these companies are getting down and so they have to find a new source of money. So imeem will carry full-length music and videos by artists of that four major record labels and record companies will share of online advertising revenues. One thing that is necessary to say something about is competition. Imeem site claims to have more than 19 million active users. Quite good you may say, but don't forget about the other major sites like YouTube or MySpace. But anyway I understand that. We live in hard times and if you don't remove the competition, they will remove you. On the other hand, it is necessary to cooperate, because only two can achieve more than one.

Led Zeppelin on the stage again
by Zuzana Hanzelova

On Monday, the world have experienced the reunion of the legendary band Led Zeppelin for the first time after 19 years at a concert in London. For about 20 million people tried to buy 18,000 tickets, available in an Internet lottery, priced $250 each, for this show, which took place in London's O2 Arena. After the postponement because of Jimmy Page's broken finger, the band finally performed their well-known songs. Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and Robert Plant & original members of the band, decided to replace the drummer John Bonham, who died in 1980, by his son Jason Bonham. Led Zeppelin split up after Bonham's death, and fans all around the world, are trying to guess, whether this was the last Zeppelin's reunion, or not. Also the members of band are hesitating. While Page said he is eager to do it, Jones has been noncommittal, and Plan quickly answered: "Don't ask." "I've got things I've been working on for the past four years that I'm proud of," Page said for Q magazine. "Some of the songs I've got ready are as good as anything I've done in the past. I wouldn't necessarily save them for my solo career," he added. Plant, who was most reluctant to join the reunion concert, told Rolling Stone magazine that: if people don't talk about a tour, anything is likely." "The more people talk, the more pressure it puts on everybody," he continued. And what id there is no more Led Zeppelin after London's show? "That's fine," Plant says, "because we will do it with a good heart." This concert was an honor to the late Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records who brought out Led Zeppelin in the United States. All profits from this show will go to the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund, supporting scholarships to universities in Turkey, the United Kindgom and the U.S. Although this was the only reunion of Led Zeppelin, they reunited briefly in 1985 for Live Aid and again in 1988 for a 40th anniversary concert for Atlantic Records. When they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, they also played a short set with some other musicians.

J. K. Rowling, the most fascinating person of 2007
by Petra Calovkova

J. K. Rowling was an ordinary woman just few years ago. Today, she is a well-known, adored, and one of the favorite authors of the books. This year she finished her last piece of the collection of seven Harry Potter books. Each one of them was a best-seller and the books are nowadays favorite fantasy stories throughout the whole world. J. K. Rowling was chosen by Barbara Walters to be the most fascinating person of this year. There are many people who would be against this choice but as a matter of a fact, she is a person who helped people to use their fantasy more that they did before, she also created a world where children can, in a way, learn how to distinguish good from bad. Actually not only children. Happy Potter is a book read by adults as well, if not even more than by younger generation. It is well developed story and has a nice ideas that make people think. In addition, she is a person who indirectly learned some of the kids to read. After seeing the first movie in the cinema, everyone wanted to know how the story continues, so also those who were not a big fans of books and this whole think about reading, were able to spend hours and days being part of the Harry Potter story. Those books really do have the power to make people read them and the author is always behind the story. Therefore J. K. Rowling might have been a single-mother and 'just' a teacher of English. But inside of her, there is a person who can create something that will affect masses of people. And if there is someone who does not agree that she did have a big impact on people, and that she deserves all her fame for her books full of fun, mystery, characters showing us we can solve some situation in a better way also in our lives, creatures that we can just see when we close our eyes and much more, than this person probably never read Harry Potter.

Nintendo as the physical therapy
by Dana Kotorova

Nintendo Wii console isn't now just for playing video games, but is also used for healing people with immobile part of body. Many institutes through all of the world have good experience with using this console for making people's muscles work well after stroke and help them to recover from injuries. It is suitable for people of all ages. "We use it for eye hand coordination; we use it for upper extremity range of motion and strengthening. It really works well with dynamic balance and weight shifting on the lower extremities", says Tara Van Buren, the Director of Outpatient Therapy. Franklin Perry had a stroke some time ago and had immobilized the right part of his body. He said: "I'm just now getting some movement back. This is more fun. It makes it more exciting. It gets me to work harder." To learn how to use this system doesn't take much effort. People often don't realize, they are going through the therapy, they just use their muscles and have fun. The important part of using this system is to make it interesting for people using it. Because when it stops being fun, it won't be a motivation for people to continue with therapy. The low price of console make people able to apply this kind of therapy also at home.

No Country for Old Men
by Ludmila Martinicka

Film of Coen brothers is a new thriller, produced by Scott Rudin, Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, and executive produced by Robert Graf and Mark Roybal. Story is based on the novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning one of America's most honored writers, Cormac McCarthy. The book was published in 2005 and received the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Coen brothers are nominated for Oscar in the category Best director. The film itself was nominated in category Best picture, Josh Brolin for Best actor, Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones for Best supporting actor. Responsibles for nominations say, that this year the nominations were really hard, because movie production and actors performances were on the really high level. The actors in the movie are well known, Academy award winner Tommy Lee Jones from The Man in Black, Josh Brolin from Grindhouse, Javier Bardem from The sea inside, Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson from The people vs. Larry Flynt and Kelly Mcdonald known from Trainspotting. The story deals about drug life, millions of dollars, catastrophic violence. Central characters are Moss, Chigurh, and Bell. The three met by events related to a drug deal gone bad near the Mexican-American border in southwest Texas in 1980. In the role of the Sheriff Bell appears Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin took the main role and Javier Bardem supporting role. Critics to this movie are talking about high quality material, and the nominations just approved it. I guess the awarding won't surprise us and movie as actors as well will bring home their awards.

Guitar makes music.
by Zuzana Valkova

Music is everywhere around you. When you are walking down the street, commuting to school or work, enjoying your drink with your friends. We are lucky that we live in these modern days, because now we can always have our music with us. I can not imagine to go somewhere without my earphones in my ears, and without my favourite artists in the pocket. But what makes music? Definitely talented people make it, but what they really need, are musical instruments. Probably the most famous instrument is guitar. I know many people who can play it, but I don't know many facts about the instrument. About 5000 years ago, guitar was noticed for the first time. It was in ancient China and India. A little bit later guitar also got to ancient Europe. There were many names for this instrument before guitar; it was kithara, cithara, sitar or guitarra. Guitars looked totally different, almost in every country had a different shape, and it didn't always have six strings, like usually have guitars now. Today they look similar. Of course, that people are trying to create something different, new. But at least we know, that it is a guitar at first sight. It can have six or more strings, sometimes even twelve. Almost everyone knows that we divide guitars into two big groups. Acoustic and electric guitars. The difference is, that acoustic guitar is wooden and it uses only vibration of strings through the body. Electric guitar converts vibrations to electrical signal, and you can hear it through amplifier.

Girlpower is back!
by Zuzana Valkova

I don't know how about you, but when I was a little child, I loved Spice Girls. They were so cool. Five young, nice girls were dancing, jumping, smiling, and of course singing in television or in magazines. Their posters were hanging on the walls in every room of every young girl. We adored them, they were more than pop stars for us, they were our heroes. Every member of the group was different. My favourite one was Mel B. She had big curly hair and always wore colorful clothes. She was the craziest one. Then was Emma, she was typical sweetheart, long blonde hair, huge smile and always very short dress. Pink was the best colour. Geri was that red one, I mean that one with red hair, she was a little bit provocative and she loved to show herself. Mel C was the sporty one, she always wore sport clothes, almost never had a skirt and I think she was the best singer. And the last one was Victoria. She looked very conservative, always very elegant and always looking very seriously. They were really popular. Their first single was Wanabe. It was the best selling debut single of all time. They became famous during the night. Together they produce two very successful albums, Spice and Spiceworld. Third one, called Forever, was without Geri, because she decided to leave the group. Last Album The Greatest Hits was released this year, and they have just started their world tour. Fans can wait what will be next. I'm not fan of them anymore, but it is a nice memory from my childhood. I think I'm going to put some songs to my iPod.

Is calling to dad scary?
by Natalia Holvova

On Wednesday was Jenna Bush presenting her new book Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope in "Ellen DeGeneres show", when Ellen called on her to phone her dad. This unexpected call made Jenna nervous and all of sudden she seemed little bit scared to call her dad, who is the most powerful man in the world. Eventually everything turned out good, the president said hello to everyone and said to his daughter he loved her as well. This cute picture of little girl calling her father appears very familiar to me. Is not it sometimes like that in our relationships with our parents? They appear too big and too important and we seem to be just small piece or reflection of their glory to call them. Still, we are from them! We are a masterpiece of them! We are the one, who has the right to call them at any time, under any circumstances! There is always image of big protector inside of us. We need someone to hold us when we are hurt, we need someone to tell us how beautiful we are, we need someone who is going to bring us in front of the altar and in all the shine and gleam kiss our forehead and hand over to the man who is supposed to get on being our hero. We need our father to be a hero, to be a king, so we can be princesses in his eyes and we need to feel safe at any time we wish to call him, maybe just to say : "Hi, I love you, dad".

Led Zeppelin's reunion
by Daniela Simkova

Led Zeppelin's concert at London's 02 Arena, firstly arranged on November 26, was postponed on December 10 because of the injury of guitarist Jimmy Page. Jimmy Page has broke his finger, which disables him to play the guitar. The specialist, who treated Jimmy Page made a statement, which said: "I have examined the fracture to Mr. Page's finger, and it is my opinion that with proper rest and treatment, he will be ready to resume rehearsing in three weeks time, and thus able to perform on December 10." Mr. Page expressed his regret for postponing the concert: "I am disappointed that we are forced to postpone the concert by two weeks. However, Led Zeppelin have always set very high standards for ourselves, and we feel that this postponement will enable my injury to properly heal, and permit us to perform at the level that both the band and our fans have always been accustomed to." Led Zeppelin consisted originally of four members: guitarist Jimmy Page, bass player John Paul Jones, singer Robert Plant and drummer John Bonham. After the death of the drummer John Bonham in 1980, the group split up and haven't reunion since. At today's reunion, Jason Bonham, the son of the famous drummer, will join Led Zeppelin at the concert at London's 02 Arena. This concert was set as a benefit concert dedicated to Mr. Ahmet Ertegun, who died last year in the age of 83. Mr. Ertegun was the one, who signed Led Zeppelin to Atlantic Records in 1969 as well as many other bands. After the reunion of Led Zeppelin said Mr. Page: "I must say that after our initial get-together it was so exhilarating and fun that I did feel I would like to do more." Mr. Page has been working on some new songs for past years, which lead him to share them with the rest of the group. He doesn't feel to leave it just for his own career. Can we then expect another concert of Led Zeppelin?
