Burton's Alice: the biggest disappointment of the year!

I was the one of millions who had a chance to see Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. As a big fan of Tim Burton I couldn’t wait to see it and I believed this is going to be another masterpiece. But now I can hardly describe my disappointment. This movie is the worst one he ever made, and neither 3D version nor well known faces such as Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham Carter did help it. Although it is difficult for me to criticize “Alice in wonderland”, it would be much harder to glorify it. But Burton seems to be satisfied. On the question why did he decide to bring a totally new vision of “Alice” he answered that there have been many versions, b! ut he never really liked any of them. “I felt like in other versions they tried to be too literal.” he said. Burton’s main aim was to use the Carroll’s characters to explore what his work did for him. “Instead of excluding fantasy from reality, he uses the fantasy to explore real themes and real issues. That’s what I have always been fascinated in.” Burton said. On the question referring to use of 3D animation he said it was just another tool for him, not a gimmick as someone would think. As he said: “It is like how you would use colour or sound, and it just kind of brings you into the world more, which is something that was very exciting to me.” But was it also exciting for the viewers? I took the liberty of citing one of Rotten Tomatoes’ subscribers Gina Carbone from Seacoast Newspapers, who summed it up when she wrote: “Tim Burton is the kind of director who probably does come up with six impossible things! before breakfast. So it was a surprise to see him produce a f! ilm so l acking in joy, innovation and curiosity.”

Najlešia bageta v Paríži je od Djibrila Bodiana z Le Grenier à Pain

Tridsaťtri ročný Djibril Bodian vyhral v pondelok súťaž v pečení najlepšej tradičnej francúzskej bagety v Paríži. Chceli by ste ju ochutnať? Nájdete ju v parížskom Montmartre. Bodian je senegalského pôvodu a pracuje pre parížsku pekáreň Grenier à Pain.V súťaži o najlepšiu bagetu porazil 162 pekárov. Súťaž sa konala v centre Paríža, kde najlepší odborníci ochutnávali súťažiace bagety a spomedzi nich vybrali tú najlepšiu. Súťaž má vysoké! ; nároky a prísne pravidlá. 22 súťažiacich bagiet bolo diskvalifikovaných kvôli porušeniu pravidiel odbornej poroty. Do súťaže mohli postúpiť iba tie bagety, ktoré boli doručené pred jednou hodinou poobede a boli dlhé 50 až 70 centimetrov a vážili od 240 do 340 gramov. Porota hodnotila bagety podľa chuti, vône, chrumkavosti, vzhľadu a kvality vzduchových dierok. Práve vzduchové dierky sú pre porotu rozhodujúce pri vyberaní najlepšej tradičnej bagety. Francúzska baguette de tradition dostala v roku 1993 svoju oficiálnu definíciu. Podľa definície musí byť tradičná bageta vyrobená z múky, vody a soli. Povolené je aj pridanie malého množstva fazule, sójovej múky a sladu. Porota zvyčajne pozostáva z profesionálov v oblasti ! pekárstva. Tento ročník bol však iný,! organiz átori súťaže sa rozhodli pribrať do poroty päť ľudí z verejnosti, ktorí sa prihlásili prostredníctvom internetu. Víťaz súťaže vyhral 4 tisíc eur. Okrem finančnej ceny má výhra aj ďalšiu výhodu. Víťazná pekáreň určite priláka množstvo ľudí a obrat pekárne sa prinajmenšom strojnásobí. Zdá sa, že Bodianov šéf bude musieť zamestnať viac personálu. Víťazná pekáreň navyše bude mať česť byť oficiálnym dodávateľom pre francúzskeho prezidenta Nicolasa Sarkozyho. Každý deň do Elyzejského paláca, sídla francúzskeho prezidenta, doručí 15 až 20 bagiet.

New York's Museum of Modern Art has added the @ symbol to its architecture and design collection. The museum said it was a “design act.” Millions of people over the whole world are using the symbol every day when typing the email addresses or writing text messages on their cell phones. For the French, it reminds them of delicious escargot, but for most of us @ is an symbol of modern Internet age. Therefore it may may surprise you to hear that the symbol is thought to be centuries old. On Monday the Museum of Modern Art in New York announced it had added the @ symbol to its its architecture and design collection for “design power” of the symbol. T! he museum said the symbol was most probably ancient. Its origins can be back in the sixth century. During its existence the symbol changed meaning many times, of course. The New York's museum celebrated the @ symbol's variability and multiplicity of meaning. For Russians it symbolized a dog and for Finns a cat and today it is part of our e-mail communication. Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of the Department of Architecture and Design, stated in the museum's blog that the @ symbol is now part of our everyday life. Antonelii further wrote that @ symbol expressed society’s changing technological and social relationships. Even though the museum added the symbol to its collection, it does not mean it has ownership of the symbol. The symbol first time appeared in the e-mail in 1971. The first e-mail was sent by engineer Ray Tomlinson.

Burtonova Alica: najväčšie sklamanie tohto roka?

Bola som jedna z miliónov ľudí, ktorí mali šancu vidieť Burtonovu „Alicu v krajine zázrakov“. Ako jeho veľký fanúšik som sa nemohla dočkať a verila som, že to bude ďalšie veľdielo. No svoje sklamanie môžem sotva opísať. Alica v krajine zázrakov je najhorší film, aký Tim Burton vo svojej kariére urobil, a nezachránila ho ani 3D animácia či známe tváre Johnnyho Deppa a Heleny Bonham Carterovej. Hoci je pre mňa nesmierne ťažké Burtona kritizovať, oveľa ťažšie by pre m&! #328;a bolo vychvaľovať tento film. Zdá sa však, že Burton je spokojný a pri tvorbe Alice sa bavil. Na otázku, prečo sa rozhodol priniesť celkom inú verziu Alice povedal, že žiadna z predchádzajúcich verzií sa mu nepáčila. „Mal som pocit, ako keby všetky ostatné verzie chceli byť príliš literárne a doslovné.“ Burtonovým hlavným cieľom bolo použiť Carrollove postavy na preskúmanie toho, čo jeho dielo pre neho, ako režiséra urobilo. „Miesto oddeľovania fantázie od reality, používa fantáziu na skúmanie reálnych tém a reálnych otázok. To ma vždy fascinovalo.“ povedal Burton. Na otázku týkajúcu sa použitia 3D technológie odpovedal, že je to pre neho iba ďalší nástroj, nie trik, ako by si ni! ekto mohol myslieť. Ako sám povedal: „Je to ak! o keby s te použili farbu alebo zvuk, skrátka je to ako keby ste sa viac ponorili do toho sveta, čo bolo pre mňa veľmi vzrušujúce.“ No bolo to rovnako vzrušujúce a zaujímavé aj pre divákov? Dovolím si odcitovať jedného z prispievateľov stránky Rotten Tomatoes, Ginu Carbone z Seacoast Newspapers, ktorá to zosumarizovala najlepšie, keď napísala: „Tim Burton je ten druh režiséra, ktorý pravdepodobne stihne pomyslieť na 6 nemožných vecí ešte pred raňajkami. Je preto prekvapením, že vyprodukoval film bez štipky radosti, inovácie a zvláštnosti.“

The best baguette in Paris is from Djibril Bodian at Le Grenier à Pain

On Monday Djibril Bodian, 33 years old, won the annual prize for baking the best traditional French loaf in Paris. Would you like to try the best baguette in Paris? You can find it on Montmartre’s rue des Abbesses. Bodian is of Senegalese origin and he works at the Grenier à Pain shop in Paris. In the contest he beat 162 others bakers. The contest was held in central Paris and the bakers' and patissiers ' professional headquarters tasted tested all the baguettes. The competition has very high criteria and strict rules. 22 baguettes were disqualified for braking the rules of the jury. Only baguettes that were delivered before 1pm, were between 50 and 70cm in le! ngth and weighed between 240 and 340 grammes were accepted to the competition. The jury judged baguettes' taste, smell, crustiness , appearance and the quality of the airholes. For jury the airholes are a crucial element in traditional baguettes. The baguette de tradition was officially defined in France in 1993. According to the definition traditional baguette must be made from flour, water and salt. The addition of very small amount of bean or soya flour and malt is also allowed. The jury traditionally consists from bakery professionals. But this year there was an innovation, five people from the public who had applied by internet were added to the jury. The winner of the competition received the prize of 4,000 euros. Besides money there is another advantage of winning. The winning shop will surely lure more people and the shop's business is likely to treble. It seems that Bodian's boss will need to employ more staff. The winning bakery will also become the off! icial supplier to President Nicolas Sarkozy. Every day it will! deliver 15-20 baguettes to the Elysée Palace.

French documentary shows people’s obedience from TV authorities

It is very strange when people are surprised by other’s actions. After so many wars, so much bloodshed, fights between relatives and families, we still capture ourselves amazed from ourselves. It seems like we overestimate mankind and think of as closer to angels than the other opposite. But, unfortunately, that is so not true. There’s something sadistic in the human nature, no matter what provokes it. People can easily obey some other authority! It is not that by saying this, I invented the hot water, but all over again, these days has been proved that that is true. I understand an authority that looks attractive, speaks eloquently and persuading, but when a T! V channel is a big authority, than that gives me worries. Trying to answer how far television can go and even more, how far people can go, producer Christophe Nick shot the documentary “The Game of Death” in which he records participants of the TV contest “Extreme Zone”, broadcasted on the national TV channel France 2, that have the freedom to decide whether they would give electrical shocks to a man or not. The “victims” in the study of human behavior were actors. The participants ask a question and whenever the victim doesn’t answer right, the punisher has the chance to regulate the electrical shock with the increments of 80 to 460 volts. Chants like in the gladiator time - Punishment! could be heard from the audience. And the numbers were devastating! 64 of the 80 interrogators wanted to reach the end of the game, and the supreme of the punishment! The experiment was based on psychologist Stanley Migram’s experiment at ! Yale University in the 1960’s that wanted to test the wi! llingnes s of participants to obey authority figures in an attempt to understand how accomplices in the Holocaust could have submitted so fully to Nazi orders. After the quiz, participants were asked if they could be used in a documentary. Only three of them refused and the others were very happy to know that they can contribute in the needs of science.

'American Idol' meets the Rolling Stones

In the first round of finals Fox singing contest “American Idol” run a night of Rolling Stone tunes. The Tuesday night brought many surprising. The judged dismissed attempt of Tim Urban who decided for create his own reggae rendition of “Under My Thumb.” Judge Randy Jackson called the Urban's version “weird,” and for Simon Cowell it was a completely “crazy decision.” But the 20-year-old student disagreed and it seemed that he really liked the remake and was absolutely satisfied. "I tried to make it my own," he firmly said. All judges praised 20-year-old Siobhan Magnus for her interpretation of “Paint It Black.”! Associated Press called Siobhan “glass blower wailing into the microphone.” Jackson said the Magnus' singing was “hot,” and Cowell called it the “standout performance of the night.” Kara DioGuardi likened Magnus to last season's runner-up Adam Lambert. The panel was pleasantly surprised by some of the respectable renditions of Stones songs. The judges liked 17-year-old high school student Katie Stevens and her performance of "Wild Horses," 23-year-old waitress Didi Benami singing "Play With Fire," and 16-year-old high school student Aaron Kelly with "Angie." Paige Miles who overcame laryngitis also surprised the panel with her rendition of “Honky Tonk Woman.” The 24-year-old preschool teacher was ill and Tuesday night it was the first time she sang the song full out. She admitted that because of her illness she could not rehearse. Casey James and Lee Dewyze accompanied themselves with their guitar playing. James, 27, c! hose song "It's All Over Now" and DioGuardi called him a ̶! 0;rock s tar.” But Dewyze,23, did not get many positive comments for his remake of “Beast Of Burden.”

American Idol spieva piesne Rolling Stones

V prvom finálovom kole speváckej súťaže American Idol, u nás známej ako Hľadá sa superstar, sa museli súťažiaci vysporiadať s pesničkami od slávnej kapely Rolling Stones. Utorkový večer priniesol mnoho prekvapení. Rozhodcovia zvozili pod zem Tima Urbana za jeho reggae verziu piesne Under My Thumb. Rozhodca Randy Jackson nazval Urbanovu verziu čudnou, pre Simona Cowella to bolo „šialené rozhodnutie.“ Dvadsaťročný študent evidentne s kritikou nesúhlasil a zdalo sa, že je so svojim vystúpením absolútne spokojný! . „Chcel som to spraviť po svojom,“ pevne povedal. Porota chválila dvadsaťročnú Siobhan Magnusovú za jej interpretáciu piesne Paint it Black. Avšak tlačová agentúra Associated Press nazvala spev Siobhanovej poháre rozbíjajúcim kvílením do mikrofónu. Jackson povedal, že Magnusiovej spev bol „hot,“ a pre Cowella bolo jej vystúpenie vrcholom večera. Kara DioGuardiová prirovnala Magnusovú k Adamovi Lambertovi z minulej série, ktorý bol veľkým favoritom. Porotu príjemne prekvapili pozoruhodné verzie slávnych piesní Rolling Stones v podaní 17-ročnej študentky strednej školy Katie Stevensovej, ktorá zaspievala Wild Horses, uznanie získali i pieseň Play With Fire v podaní 23-ročnej čašníčky Didi Benamiovej a pieseň Angie, ktorú zaspi! eval 16-ročný stredoškolák Aaron Kelly. ! Paige Mi lesová aj napriek prekonanej laryngitíde prekvapila porotu svojim podaním piesne Honky Tonk Woman. 24-ročná učiteľka v škôlke sa priznala, že kvôli chorobe nemohla vôbec skúšať a v utorok večer zaspievala celú pieseň prvýkrát. Casey James a Lee Dewyze sa doprevádzali svojou hrou na gitare. 27-ročný James si vybral pieseň It's All Over Now a DioGuardiová ho nazvala rockovou hviezdou. Avšak Dewyze, 23, za svoj remake piesne Beast Of Burden veľa chvály nezožal.

Počivaj vo mir, Piter…

Nikogaš ne me bivalo za pamtenje iminja. No, sekogaš sum pamtel lica. I liceto na Piter Grejv e dobro poznato, ne samo za mene. Ovoj amerikanski akter, roden kako Piter Arnes, beše sin na novinar i biznismen i pomlad brat na akterot Dzejms Arnes. Za da go izbegne mešanjeto so postariot brat, Piter go prifati prezimeto na svojot dedo i prilično go proslavi. Grejvs beše najdobro poznat za ulogata na vodač na tim od specijalni agenti Dzim Felps od televiziskata serija „Misija – Nevozmožno“. Za vreme na negovata akterska kariera, toj igraše različni ulogi – vo 1953 godina vo voenata drama „Stalag 17! “ se pretvori vo nezaboravniot nacistički špion i vo „Avion!“ toj go igraše drdorliviot pilot Klerans Over. Filmot stana hit na kinoblagajnite i nemaše pričina zošto da ne se snimi „Avion 2: Prodolženie“. Za vreme na negovata rečisi 60-godišna kariera, Grejvs se pojavi vo duzina filmovi i nekoi televiziski šoua. Vo podocnežnite godini, toj isto taka se pojavuvaše vo reklami i mnogu od negovite prijateli go ohrabruvaa da se proba vo politika. Kako što reče publicistot Sendi Broko: „Toj imaše takov državnički kvalitet. Piter Grejvs počina od srcev udar na 14 mart 2010 godina.

R.I.P. Peter...

I have never had talent for remembering names. But I have always remembered faces. And the face of Peter Grave is well known, not just to me. This American actor, born as Peter Aurness, was the son of a journalist and businessman and younger brother of actor James Arness. To avoid confusion with older brother, Peter adopted his grandfather’s last name and he made it quite famous. Graves was best known for the role of leader of a gang of special agents, Jim Phelps from TV’s “Mission: Impossible”. During his acting carrier he played various roles – in 1953’s prisoner-of-war drama “Stalag 17” he turned in an unforgettable Nazi sp! y and in “Airplane!” he portrayed bumbling airplane pilot Clarence Oveur. This movie became a box-office smash and there was no reason why not to do “Airplane II: The Sequel”. During his career of nearly 60 years, Graves appeared in dozens of films and some television shows. In late years he also appeared in commercials and many of his friends encouraged him to go into politics. As publicist Sandy Brokaw said: “He had this statesmanlike quality. People were always encouraging him to run for office.” Fortunately he didn’t do so and lived quite calm life of American movie star. From 1950, when he married his college sweetheart Joan Endress, they lived together happily and had three daughters. Sixty years and still together – that is very rare in Hollywood and very precious. To die just a few days before your own birthday could be sad and maybe also little bizarre, but there is nothing better than to die surrounded by your family! . Peter Graves died of heart attack on March 14, 2010.

Nikdy som nemala dobrú pamäť na mená a názvy, no zato si celkom dobre pamätám tváre. A tvár Petera Gravesa je známa dosť. A to nielen mne. Tento americký herec, narodený ako Peter Aurness, bol synom žurnalistky a obchodníka a mladším bratom Jamesa Arnessa – známeho filmového herca. Aby sa vyhol zmätkom a zámenám, Peter prijal priezvisko svojho starého otca, ktoré neskôr aj preslávil. Graves bol známy najmä pre dlhodobo vysielaný televízny seriál Mission: Impossible, kde hral lídra skupiny špeciálnych ! agentov – Jima Phelpsa. Počas svojej kariéry hral v rôznych filmoch a stvárnil rôznorodé postavy – v dráme o vojnových zajatcoch z roku 1953 nazvanej „Stalag 17“ si zahral nezabudnuteľného nacistického špióna a v snímke „Pripútajte sa, prosím!“ zasa stvárnil nemotorného pilota Clarenca Oveura. Keďže sa tento film stal trhákom, nebolo dôvodu nenatočiť jeho pokračovanie. Počas jeho 60 ročnej hereckej kariéry sa Graves objavil v tucte filmov a niekoľkých televíznych show. V posledných rokoch bol často obsadzovaný aj do reklám a viacerí jeho priatelia si ho vedeli predstaviť aj ako politika. Ako povedal publicista Sandy Brokaw: „Mal črty a kvality štátnika. Ľudia ho vždy povzbudzovali k tomu, aby kandidoval.“ Našťa! stie tak neurobil a tak si mohol užívať pomerne! pokojn& #253; život americkej filmovej hviezdy. Od roku 1950, kedy si vzal za ženu svoju vysokoškolskú lásku Joan Endress, žili spolu šťastne a mali tri dcéry. Šesťdesiat rokov a stále spolu – to je veľmi neobvyklé v Hollywoode. A tiež veľmi cenné. A hoci zomrieť pár dní pred vlastnými narodeninami môže znieť bizarne, umrieť obklopený rodinou je to najlepšie, čo sa človeku môže stať. Peter Graves zomrel dňa 14. marca 2010 na zlyhanie srdca.

Tohtoročné Oskary sa niesli v znamení filmu The Hurt Locker

Vojnová dráma Smrť čaká všade alebo The Hurt Locker po anglicky, natočená s relatívne nízkym rozpočtom, ovládla tohtoročná Oskary. Napriek tomu, že film v réžii Kathryn Bigelow, ktorá je bývalou manželkou Jamesa Camerona a vraj ešte nikdy v živote na Oskaroch nebola, mal priazeň kritikov, nikto nečakal, že bude triumfovať i nad Avatarom a jeho čarovným a pestrým svetom zvaným Pandora. Smrť čaká všade natáčaný v Jordánsku, rozpráva príbeh troch členov bombovej jednotky ame! rickej armády pôsobiacej v Iraku. Hlavných úloh sa zhostili herci širšiemu publiku relatívne neznámi – Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie a Brian Geraghty. No objavili sa tu i známejšie tváre ako napríklad Evangeline Lilly či Ralph Fiennes. Film celkovo získal šesť zlatých sošiek, vrátane tých za najlepší film a najlepšieho režiséra. Odovzdať cenu za najlepšiu réžiu prišla speváčka a herečka Barbra Streisand a bola viac než spokojná, že ju dať do rúk práve Kathryn Bigelow, ktorá sa stala historicky prvou ženou, ktorý zvíťazila v tejto kategórii. Neskôr v zákulisí Kathryn Bigelow povedala, že dúfa, že je len prvou v rade z žien režisérok, ktorým sa dostane takejto pocty. „Samozrejme, rada o sebe uv! ažujem ako filmárovi,“ povedala Kathryn Bigelo! w. ̶ 2;A rada by som sa dočkala dňa kedy sa tá mužská koncovka prestane vzťahovať na všetkých, aj na ženy, no teraz som nekonečne vďačná za to, že mám možnosť inšpirovať nejakého mladého ambiciózneho a húževnatého filmára či filmárku, a dokázať im, že naozaj všetko je možné. Nikdy sa nevzdávajte svojho sna.“ Film Smrť čaká všade bol ďalej ocenený v kategóriách Najlepší originálny scenár, Najlepší strih, Najlepší strih zvuku a Najlepší mix zvuku. Pre porovnanie, Avatar získal troch Oskarov vrátane toho za Najlepšie vizuálne efekty. Jeff Bridges bol ocenený ako Najlepší herec v hlavnej úlohe za postavu country hudobníka vo filme Crazy Heart, zatiaľ čo Najle! pšou herečkou v hlavnej úlohe sa stala Sandra Bullock za postavu matky, ktorá sa ujme problémového afroamerického mladíka vo filme The Blind Side. Počas svojej ďakovnej reči sa neubránila slzám a cenu venovala všetkým matkám.

Low budget The Hurt Locker beats Avatar

Low budget war drama The Hurt Locker dominated this years´ Oscars. Although the movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who was married to James Cameron by the way and reportedly has never been to Oscars before, was favored by the critics, no one expected it would beat Avatar and its magical and colorful world of Pandora. The Hurt Locker filmed in Jordan tells a story of three members of US Army bomb squad in Iraq. It stars actors quite unknown to broader public such as Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie or Brian Geraghty. However, also more famous Evangeline Lilly or Ralph Fiennes took part. The movie earned six Academy Awards, including for the best picture and the best direc! tor. Barbra Streisand announced the Oscar for Best Director and was more than happy to pass it to the first woman in history to win in this category, Kathryn Bigelow. Later, Bigelow said she hopes she is only the first one in a row of female directors to reach this Olympus of filmmaking. "And of course, I'd love to just think of myself as a filmmaker," Bigelow said. "And I long for the day when that modifier can be a moot point, but I'm ever grateful if I can inspire some young intrepid tenacious male or female filmmaker, and have them feel that the impossible is possible. Never give up on your dream." The other Oscars The Hurt Locker won were for original screenplay, sound editing, sound mixing and film editing. For comparison, Avatar earned three Oscars, including the one for visual effects. Jeff Bridges was awarded an Oscar for Best Actor for the role of country musician in Crazy Heart, while Sandra Bullock was named Best Actress for the role of a mother that helps a t! roubled youngster in The Blind Side. During her acceptance spe! ech she couldn´t hold back tears and dedicated the award to all mothers.

With Alice in Wonderland...

As I have just read that Tim Burton’s new movie Alice in Wonderland had a mammoth opening weekend of $116.1 million, I guess I am not the only one who cannot wait to see it. I love Burton and the way he works. I love he is always trying to distil Johnny Depp into his pictures and I love the fact it all somehow work together. Alice in Wonderland is a fantasy adventure film which uses a technique of combining live action and animation. Burton made his voice heard that original Wonderland story was always about a girl wandering around from one character to another, what he wanted to change as he never felt any real emotional connection. His intention was not to create a ! movie sequel to previous films nor movie composited from series of events, but to create a movie telling the story. Story of a girl who is the only one that can slay a dragon living in the Underland was inspired by Jabberwocky poem, that was a part of Burton’s “framework”. As he explained: “the goal is to try to make it an engaging movie where you get some of the psychology and kind of bring a freshness but also keep the classic nature of Alice.” Reviews of the movie are giving it a rating average of 5.8 out of 10 what gives a movie an overall approval rating of 61 percent, what is nothing special. Rotten Tomatoes’ general consensus is that: “Tim Burton’s Alice sacrifices the book’s minimal narrative coherence – and much of its hear – but it’s an undeniable visual treat.”

"Hurt Locker" earns best-picture Oscar"

“The Hurt Locker”took top Oscars, the war drama won six awards including the best picture. Kathryn Bigelow, the director of “The Hurt Locker,” took the top directing honor for he war drama from Iraq environment. She became the first woman who has ever won the prize. In the backstage she said she hoped she was the first of many. Bigelow's rival was James Cameron, director of the sci-fi film “Avatar.” The fact that Cameron is Bigelow's ex-husband made the competition between two directors even more exciting. In spite of nine nomination, “Avatar” won only three awards in technical categories: art direction, cinematography an! d visual effects. Surprisingly, in the foreign language category Aregentina's “El Secreto de Sus Ojos” won over favorites "The White Ribbon" from Germany and "Un Prophete" from France. But in all the main categories the winners were pretty predictable. In the category for the best picture in a year there were 10 nominees instead of the usual five. Organisators wanted to include more commercial movies in the mix. Jeff Bridges won best actor in “Crazy Heart,” where he played country singer. Sandra Bullock won the best-actress prize for playing a mother in “The Blind Side.” Christoph Waltz won the best supporting actor for his performance as a Nazi colonel in “Inglourious Basterds” and the price for the best supporting actress was won by Mo'Nique who played a cruel mother in film “Precious.” The Oscar ceremony had two hosts, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, the kings of dry comedy. Unfortunately, not everyone foun! d their lame jokes very amusing.

All is about money, and when the crisis began, all those, so much needed money, were gone. The basic economic rule is: where is no money, there is no work and where is no work, there is no money. It is like a vicious circle which when it is tried to be cut through, the third side is always suffering. Don’t you understand? Let’s be specific. Imagine the situation you are waiting for the Oscars ceremony the whole long year. You love it, doesn’t really matter why. As the D-day is coming, you are thinking about taking holiday just for this one single day. Finally you did it. You are sitting at home satisfied, fully prepared for exciting ceremony. You have you! r favorites and you can hardly wait for the results. You have been watching Oscar ceremony for 13 minutes and suddenly you lost TV signal. All you see on the TV screen now are black and white dots moving quickly and making strange rustling noise. Dispute over fees restored millions of viewers’ access to the Academy Awards telecast. Cablevision and ABC are responsible. They had been hammering at each other for days, but imperiling viewers’ access to such a highly rated program no one expected. The spokesman of ABC’s parent company – Walt Disney Co. – Charissa Gilmore said that: “Cablevision has once again betrayed its subscribers” as it “pocketed almost $8 billion last year, and now customers aren’t getting what they pay for…again.” Although Rebecca Campbell, president and general manager of WABC-TV said that companies had “reached an agreement and ABC7 will return to Cablevision households”, it is! not 100 percent guarantee, this situation will not repeat.

Nuclear power able to meet global energy demands, although with serious consequences.

On the issue of alternative energy sources, most of the scientists and technicians agree on statement that it still won't be enough. We consume such enormous amounts of energy that the we would either have to find one efficient alternative for fossil fuels or to drastically decrease our needs.I guess the second option is no coming to reality, so there is currently only one way to go.Nuclear energy – despite of its highly risky disadvantages for now it is the short-term alternative to increasing prices of fossil fuels. One could even say, nuclear energy is environmentally friendly – since it blows only water steam. The more important issue is the radioactive wast! e. The uranium is not exhausted and the real amount of transferred energy nears to 5 percent. The waste is highly radioactive and spoils its environment. The only safe place is to storage it for decades of years on places without the water access. But that is not possible in Earth conditions. Even the air contains the water. Nevertheless, the contamination is always a real issue with nuclear waste. A lot of countries have been already using nuclear energy to cover its deeds even to make profit on selling it. For example, France is totally dependent on its nuclear power. Just like Austria that in paradox, is constantly blocking the projects of nuclear power stations everywhere it can reach.Austrian politicians that are proud of their green energy thinking are on holy war with their neighbors that make their own nuclear energy. This morning France has opened two day conference on peaceful nuclear power issue. More than 60 countries take places here, even Syria and Libya are o! n the list. Two that are missing are North Korea and Iran. The! confere nce should discuss the nuclear energy technologies and its global distribution.

Najlepším filmom roka sa stala dráma Smrť čaká všade

Americká vojnová snímka Smrť čaká všade (The Hurt Locker) zozbierala hlavné ocenenia na slávnostnom odovzdávaní Oscarov. Vojnová dráma získala šesť ocenení vrátane Oscara za najlepší film roka. Kathryn Bigelowová, režisérka filmu Smrť čaká všade, si prevzala cenu za réžiu a stala sa tak prvou ženou v histórii, ktorá túto cenu vyhrala. V zákulisí novinárom povedala, že verí, že je iba prvá z mnohých. Najväčším rivalom Bigelowej bol James Cameron, re&! #382;isér sci-fi snímky Avatar. Cameron a Bigelowá boli pred rokmi manželia, o to viac bol ich súboj napínavý a prilákal pozornosť médií i publika. Avatar napriek deviatim nomináciám nakoniec odišiel iba s troma soškami. Avatar bol víťazný film v troch technických kategóriách: umelecká réžia, filmová kamera a vizuálne efekty. Prekvapenie prinieslo víťazstvo argentínskeho filmu El Secreto de Sus Ojos v kategórii zahraničného filmu. Argentínskej snímke sa podarilo zvíťaziť hoci favorizovanými filmami boli francúzska dráma Un Prophete a nemecký film Biela stuha. V ostatných kategóriách však boli víťazi dosť predvídateľní. V kategórii film roka sa objavilo desať nominácií, namiesto zvyčajných! päť. Organizátori chceli do nominácií! ; zamie& #353;ať aj komerčnejšie filmy. Jeff Bridges vyhral Oscara za najlepší herecký výkon vo filme Crazy Heart, kde stvárnil postavu country speváka. Sandra Bullocková získala ocenenie najlepšej herečky za úlohu matky vo filme The Blind Side. Christoph Waltz s rakúskym pôvodom vyhral Oscara za vedľajšiu úlohu vo filme Hanební parchanti, kde stvárnil postavu nemeckého nacistického plukovníka. Mo'Nique bola víťazkou v kategórii vedľajšia ženská úloha, sošku si odniesla za postavu matky v dráme Precious. Moderátormi odovzdávania Oscarov boli Alec Baldwin a Steve Martin. Žiaľ, ich suchý humor a hlúpe vtipy neboli zábavné pre všetkých.

Na Nikola Šartie, producent na filmot “The Hurt Locker” nema da mu bide dozvoleno da dojde na dodeluvanjeto na nagradite na Akademijata vo nedela, poradi negovite imejlovi što im gi ispratil na členovi na Akademijata, zamoluvajkji gi da glasaat za negoviot film. Dokolku voenata prikazna “The Hurt Locker” osvoi nagrada, Nikola Šartie kje dobie Oskar so zadocneta data. Izvršniot komitet na Akademijata za filmska umetnost i nauka mu dodeli kazna na Šartie za prekršuvanje na pravilata na „Oskar“. Šartie im ispratil imejlovi na nekoi od členovite na Akademijata na 19 fevruari. Ye-Ye Queen

While 1960s in America were all about Elvis Presley and the Beatles, France (as usual) was living in a different world. The spotlight was on so called Ye-ye style what was a style of pop music and its singing sensation Sylvie Vartan. She was the most productive and active artist of the ye-ye girls. She has been performing for more than 40 years now and as she says: “it is part of my life, obviously.” During her early carrier she made appearances on French and Italian TV and enjoyed full houses at the Olympia. In spite of two heavy car accidents she continued intensive performing and recording. She says there must be “passion and desire” which are the! most important things for performer and musician as they are keeping you afloat. It is also the same “burning desire” what keeps your fans to still have an interest in you and the work you do. She took a break in show business in 1984, but in 6 years she was back again to give a concert at the Palace of Culture of Sofia. Today she has a new DVD out called “Sylvie Live” which was recorded last September at the Olympia where, in the past, she played for instance with Beatles. “It feels like home to me.” she said. At the latest performance she was singing also with Johnny Hallyday, her ex-husband what was “very nice and refreshing” for her. Sylvie is currently married to American record producer Tony Scotti and even though her home is still Paris she actually has “never settled.”

Oscars bar the door to Chartier

Nicolas Chartier, producer of the film ”The Hurt Locker,” will not be allowed to come to Academy Awards on Sunday because of his e-mails that he sent to members of academy asking them to vote for his movie. If the war story “The Hurt Locker” wins award Nicolas Chartier will receive an Oscar at a later date. The executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences imposed the penalty on Chartier for violating Oscar rules. Chartier sent an e-mail to some academy members on Feb 19. In the e-mail he asked them to support his film and not a “$500 million film” which obviously refers to “Avatar.” Los Angele! s Times reported Chartier's e-mails in which he is asking Academy's members to rank “The Hurt Locker” at No.1 and “Avatar” at No. 10. Chartier apologized for his behavior, saying he strongly regretted his ignorance of the rules and stupidity. Summit Entertainment, which released “The Hurt Locker” did not comment the Chartier's penalty. Both “Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker” got nine Oscar nominations. At British Academy Film Awards “The Hurt Locker” took six prizes and won over “Avatar.” But “Avatar” won the Golden Globe for best drama. “The Hurt Locker” received honors from critics and key Hollywood trade groups. Chartier is one of four producers of the film, along with director Kathryn Gigelow, screenwriter mark Boal and Greg Shapiro. New Museum of Frederic Chopin Opens in Polish Capital

Frederic Chopin, one of the greatest romantic piano composers died of tuberculosis, hardly reaching 40 years. His life was really emotional in both directions. His kindness and weak health made him vulnerable, but his virtuosity made him the most prestigious piano teacher and composer in Paris. He was an object of many women, yet the most important woman in his life was George Sand who cared for sick Chopin more than eight years. Then she left him. They say, he was waiting for her on his deathbed. She never came. One of the most inspirative museums of Chopin is being open in Warszaw these days. Polish people are extremely proud of this man, so his museum has to be perfect. ! Polish authorities said they began collecting remains like music scores, sketches or daily objects in 1899. Except of musical and antiquarian value they are full of great emotions. If you visit this museum with previously internet ordered tickets you are about the enter three theme rooms – one following his childhood and youth – his first 20 years in Poland, before he moved to Paris. The second is dedicated to the common life of Chopin and Sand at Nohant, the French chateau, the third is following his death. You are about to see his last piano, wisp of his hair or his death mask or kitchen embroidery with their initials made by Sand. Still, museum representatives stated it was really hard to collect most of his personal objects. Most of the letters were destroyed by women he loved or by the devastation during WWII.

Hollywood is a pure business and everyone looking for some art should be looking somewhere else. Hollywood at its best is the combination of a movie wiping out theaters and some tastes of art. Commercial meets the vision of art.But let me ask the question – does it seek for more? Businessmen and production studios are happy and satisfied to sell the movies to people. Anything that would be mass demanded. It means a lot of emotions, violence, action or animation.Still, there are some directors able to use this crap, mix it to the unusual, yet impressive and not finished pieces of art. Remember of Lynch's Mulholland Drive or Lost Highway. With a great portion of usual t! ools he created something beyond understanding. Some directors fall back to well tried tools – for example a genre selection – thrillers or dramas. They are selling well. Violence and fear are good business articles. Sometimes they can sell a lot of tickets and still be somewhat understandable, but bit strange remaining of tough artistic experience.I remember Francis Coppola's Apocalypso now that took my breath away. The whole movie followed the mind of a man slowly falling to insanity. The movie was about the prey and the hunter, but seated the basic question – where was the line between them? The person chasing a madman turned into a madman. The brilliant scene making, script, direction and editing made it one of the best movies in Hollywood's history.Another story of soon to be madman is being depicted in Kubrick's Shining with Jack Nicholson. Now it is coming to Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island.Scorsese did a brilliant, yet safe piece of movie. It cert! ainly earned its prize – in two week it sold more than $! 22,665,2 05 in Canada. And as we can expect, Scorsese was following the mind of a madman. Leonardo DiCaprio acted amazing, direction, scene making was amazing as well. The plot line wasn't that original, neither was the script. But the rest could work well for thriller movie fans. Scorsese left some mystery uncovered, such as he used the music – lowered in the breaking points.

Who could believe that a remote village restaurant and not some big fancy restaurant would win the prestigious Michelin restaurant guide? For all those doubtful readers, yes it is very possible. Tears of rejoicing could be seen on the face of the chef Gilles Goujon of the eatery L'Auberge du Vieux Puits on Monday. This traditional eatery can be found in south-western part of France, in the village of Fontjoncouse, some 60 kilometres from the walled medieval city of Carcassonne. It is not even a little bit strange that out of 558 restaurants that have won this award in the whole world, this eatery is the 26-th French restaurant that will have the delighted stars. Chef Goujo! n is the best known for preparing dishes of red mullet, baby goat and eggs served truffles over a mushroom and truffle purée. If you want to taste some of his piece of arts, you must pull out from your wallet from 58 to 125 euros. His simplicity is his benchmark and he will keep that, no matter what. I am more that sure that 18 years ago, when chef Goujon and his wife decided to open the small restaurant, didn’t expect that such an honor would come to them today. “To be a great chef, you must be a cook, a cook in spirit, a cook in the heart," said Goujon, 48, calling his auberge a "country restaurant." Michelin Red Guide is known as an arbiter of fine dining. Each year, that is a very awaited event in the country where cuisine was raised to an art. Michelin celebrated its hundredth edition last year, and has 25 guides so far, and you can find it in 23 countries worldwide. For a small restaurant “Yam’Tcha”, near the Louvre, 32-year-old ! chef Adeline Grattard won her first star. It is a surprising t! hat Mich elin guide decided to award such a young chef. The Director of Guides, Jean-Luc Naret, explained that “Paris remains the world capital of gastronomy, thanks to its many young and brilliant chefs”.
