Who actually built them?
by Barbora Misakova

If you belong to the lovers of history and your interest is focused particularly on Egypt and pyramids, then read these few lines. I bet they will not only surprise you but also amuse you. Popularly held belief that pyramids were built by slaves may not be right. Discovery of new tombs in Giza support the view that builders were free workers! Egypt’s chief archeologist Zahi Hawass remembers how it all started. It was on April 14, 1990 when a horse stumbled on a brick structure, which was previously unseen. The excavations discovered it was a part of a tomb for a family and workers. As these tombs were too close to the pyramid, the questions arose. As says Mr. Hawass: ! “These tombs were built beside the king’s pyramid, which indicates that these people were not by any means slaves.” Another proof of existence of these free and paid workers has a form of graffiti on the walls of the tombs which says these people were “friends of Khufu”. The fact they were also fed by the farmers (they were sending them 21 cattle and 23 sheep daily) also points on the possibility that pyramids were built by free builders! According to the experts working on these excavations, workers’ tombs are from the 4th Dynasty what mean they are about 4,150-year-old. By their description as cone-shaped constructions of mud bricks covered in white plaster it is seen they were built to mimic pyramids of the kings. Tombs resemblance to the pyramid and the fact they lie near them can be interpreted as an honor given to the laborers for months of hard work.
