Ordinary movie about controversial guy?
by Barbora Misakova

Physical love is a dead end. This is just one of many phrases from a controversial song called “Je T'aime... Moi Non Plus“. I have to admit, and I am a little bit ashamed of that, that the name Serge Gainsbourg was saying nothing to me. On the other hand this song is more than familiar. It is a legend! I could say I was growing up on this song, even though it was written a lot sooner, exactly in 1968. Maybe only few of you know, but this song was originally written for Brigitte Bardot. She pleaded with Gainsbourg not to release it, as she was married at the time. Gainsbourg complied and later met and fell in love with Jane Birkin and re-recorded the song with he! r. This version became a hit known in the whole world although it was denounced by the Vatican and banned on the BBC. Gainsbourg’s personality and his life were full of controversy. Jewish boy affected by the occupation of France by Nazi Germany grew out of childish foolishness and became a man with reputation as a rake and lothario. He was married three times and had as it was already mentioned a short but ardent love affair with Brigitte Bardot. His controversial sense of humor and provocation accompanied him through his whole life. Besides that his extremely varied musical style and individuality made from him a persona difficult to categorize. But is that sufficient cause for making a new biopic of him? Gainsbourg will be performed by Eric Elmosnino whose remarkable resemblance gives this picture preconditions for good piece, but will it be enough? Joann Sfar, director of the movie, wants to create a picture of a man constantly arguing with his giant alter ego, bu! t honestly, don’t all these biographic movies do the sam! e?

Hi Barbora! Glad to see the film's caught your attention. It's actually getting some really great reviews saying that it departs from a traditional biopic and that Sfar, coming from a background in comics/graphic novels/etc., has put a really unique touch on the character of Gainsbourg, one of France's most beloved and prolific songwriters. If you want to keep up with everything going on with the film, I started an international fan blog to cover all the news and worldwide release info. Hope you'll stop by and check it out. Cheers:D
