In Memoriam of Jennifer Jones
by Claudia Sonea

“Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep.” Said Mary Elizabeth Frye and it seems to suit perfectly the volcanic personality of Jennifer Jones who at the age of 90 joined the angels in heaven. Most of us new her only from the characters she used to portray in the movies, while losing from sight her essence as she tried to keep her intimacy away from the scornful eye of the public. The authentic country girl lived only to become a Hollywood star and in fact the major role that brought her the desired fame was that of a French peasant girl who was having visions with the Blessed Virgin ! Mary. Born in Oklahoma, Jennifer knew how to act as a peasant, but what enlightened her into impersonating a saint? In "The Song of Bernadette" she made a rehearsal of how close you can get to the divinity and now she finally had her last performance by passing into eternity. Embodiment of the American Dream, Jennifer Jones went to college pursuing a dream, although financially she was rather limited. She fought to get on the peaks of success and after rushing into a marriage with her colleague Robert Walker, they both went ready to conquer Hollywood. After a few minor roles, she got her lucky break and her reputation went soon from unknown to an Academy Award winner who all would like to have as a leading actress. Like all other big names of the treacherous entertainment industry, Jennifer too surged into the dark world of barbiturates and a preview of her death determined her to isolate from the world. Moreover, sh! e was also marked by the tragic death of her daughter whose de! ath was considered to be a suicide due to the amount of alcohol and barbiturates found in her blood. Jennifer Jones tasted a slice of the American Pie and all her life changed in a matter of seconds. From the simple girl become the refined, exquisite actress that then again lost all the privileges and slowly retired from the public life in an attempt to evade the harsh reality. May God rest her soul and all those who survived her should be rejoicing as she finally got the internal peace and stability she was looking for.
