Here he comes, the modern Cavemen
by Nina Gotzmannova

They had not disappeared in gap of time, cavemen are still among us. Most recently they came from GEICO advertisements and made their debut on TV. The new sitcom of ABC called ‘Cavemen' made a debut in a pilot episode, but next Tuesday will the show air once again with small changes. In the well-known commercial is underestimated the intelligence of modern living cavemen. Eleven parts were showing cavemen facing misunderstanding, offends and prejudice. The sitcom will be based on similar characteristic, telling a story about three cavemen friends living in San Diego and battling with problems of modern life and, of course, prejudice against cavemen. The previous plans were that cavemen will live in Atlanta, but production faced some problems with picturing Atlanta in the movie. They changed the setting to San Diego instead. ABC also declared the original episode didn't introduce three prehistoric friends properly and that is the main reason it has to be redone. In the sitcom will play Bill English, Nick Kroll and Sam Huntington, more known as Mimi-Siku in 1997 Disney's movie Jungle 2 Jungle. None of the actors played in the GEICO TV spot, but Jeff Daniel Phillips, one of the original cavemen, will play a recurring character. Anyway the word cavemen and the description of cavemen is a prejudice itself. It is only a fiction how early people may live. Cavemen are often pictured as hairy aggressive men, dressed in animal skin and fur and really unintelligent. They were also believed to knock out their females and drag them by hair into the cave. Hopefully the ABC cavemen will behave gentler.

Iraqis return to making music at home
by Delia Cruceru

With no other method for entertaining and bored by the television, Iraqi youngsters are now concentrating on taking music lessons at home. Many educated families insist on education and want their children to learn a musical instrument. But most of the top musicians from Iraq have left the country to neighbouring countries such as Syria and Jordan, leaving instrument shops behind with not customers, because of extreme religious trends that reject art and artists. "Artists and local troupes have been warned to quit their professions and some have been beaten up by people affiliated to religious and extreme Islamic parties," said Raghid, owner of an instrument shop in Baghdad's downtown Karrada district. Fortunately for people like Raghid, amateurs like students, or simply people who love Western music, are now buying instruments, in order to entertain themselves for no cinema or theatres work in the country. The mainly customers are the young people, as Abbas Fadhel, 28, who recently graduated from Baghdad's Higher Music Institution says that students are torn between getting out and risking travelling the highly dangerous streets of the capital or staying at home and being bored. "They say they're afraid to go out, but they also feel they're wasting their time sitting at home," said Fadhel. The new trend of playing music at home is very hopeful for music teachers and instrument shop owners, helping them to pass thru the hard life in Iraq.

Marcel Marceau- in memoriam
by Claudia Sonea

On Saturday in Paris a star took its rightful place on the blue sky; the mime legend Marcel Marceau died due to unrevealed reasons. However, the causes are not that important, the thing that really matters is his legacy. Besides the fact that the mime that dates to ancient Greece was revived thanks to him, Marceau was a hero during World War II and a bunch of children who are now grown ups owe him their life. He was a Jew born Marcel Mangel on March 22, 1923, in Strasbourg, France. Charles, his father, although he was a butcher, he had great love of song and introduced him in to the world of music and theater at an early age. Chaplin, Buster Keaton and the Marx brothers were the ones that captivated his interest and later on inspired him in his performance. When the Nazis entered eastern France, his family fled to the southwest and changed their name in Marceau to trick the invaders into believing they are French. He and his brother Alain decided to enter the French Resistance, helping children to escape the deportation by altering their age on the identity card. Later on he became the inside man for Gen. George S. Patton's army. In 1944 a tragedy fell upon his family; his father was deported to Auschwitz, the concentration camp. As a mime, the entire performance was a live representation of his experiences. A spectrum of characters took live through his talent of miming. At the Theatre de Poche, a smoke-filled Left Bank cabaret, Marcel got to perfection with the mime acting, creating his personal trademark that become famous across the world after his mid 1950s debut in America. He performed in Asia, Europe, United States, Cuba, interpreting characters from a waiter to a lion tamer to an old woman knitting, and to the best-known Bip. Youth, Maturity, Old Age, Death was an act that showed the cycle of life in just few minutes, while Public Garden was the act pointing out his amazing talent, miming in a park all the characters from little boys playing ball to old women with knitting needles. Besides his Legion of Honor and his countless honorary degrees, Marcel was also invited to be a United Nations goodwill ambassador for a 2002 conference on aging. President Nicolas Sarkozy stated that France is losing an eminent ambassador and Prime Minister Francois Fillon praised Marceau saying that he will remain a legend because he succeeded to break all languages barriers. Let's keep a moment of silence in the loving memory of someone that left a trace behind and enriched everyone.

Music helped one little guy to live
by Nina Gotzmannova

People tend to feel sorry for their disabled fellows. But sometimes the ones who can't see or hear lead more fulfilled and happier life that their healthy friends. The disability doesn't necessary mean life in boredom or loneliness. An extraordinary example is a small boy named Rex. Rex Lewis-Clark was born with a cyst in his brain and when he was only four months old, the doctors found he was blind. His brain damage was really serious and the doctors predict him a future without walking, talking, and barely living. Soon he has developed autistic-like syndromes and avoids touching anything. His hands were hypersensitive. But he and his parents didn't give up. For his second birthday Rex received a keyboard. And everything has changed. It was the first time he wanted to touch something. As he heard the music, he was fascinated and fell in love with the piano. Soon he began playing every day. At age 5 he starts working with a teacher and now, at age 8, he has a talent only one in 10.000 people have. Although he is disabled and blind, he can play every single song he hear or determine every single tone someone plays. Rex is considered a musical genius. He can't see the piano keys or even read music, but he can play absolutely every song right after hearing it. His love in music helped him in other aspects in his life. He learned to talk, walk and even run. The music has changed his life in a way no one expected. But Rex is not the only one with this unbelievable talent, there are more similar savants in the world. Tony DeBlois, a blind and autistic boy, learned to play more than 20 instruments, knows more than 8.000 songs and actually graduated from Berklee College of Music. He also has his own band. Both of the guys lead a life anyone can be proud of.

Phil Spector's murder trial is still not decided
by Nina Gotzmannova

Music producer Phil Spector, accused of murder, received some bad news this Wednesday. His charge will be not restricted. The jury remained deadlocked after a whole week of consultations and split 7 to 5 after four ballots, with no result and no expectations to change their minds. The judge ordered the jury not to give up and not to think about reduced charge. Thereby the jury won't be able to change Spectors charge to involuntary manslaughter. Spector is accused of second degree murder of an actress Lana Clarkson in 2003 and facing at least 15 years in jail. The judge will now reinstruct the jury and wait for the verdict. Spector, now 67 year old, was arrested on 3 February 2003, after the body of a dead woman was found at his mansion in Alhambra, California. The 40 year old actress named Lana Clarkson was gunshot to the mouth. She met the producer only several hours ago she was found dead. Spector claims the death was an accidental suicide. Anyway, he was arrested and in September 2004 officially charged of murder. But this is not his first experience wit gun-caused accidents. Since late sixties he was known for being violent against women including his own then-wife Ronnie Spector and he also threatened his clients with gun. He placed a gun at Leonard Cohen's head during recording an album, pointed the gun at Dee Dee Ramone while playing at bass guitar and more. Spector is legendary producer and worked with many rock ‘and ‘roll stars such as The Beatles, The Ronettes or The Ramones. The result of the jury would be not only the punishment for the murder of Lana Clarkson, but may by also the reflection of his previous sins. The sentence in jail, if it will be 15 years or more will be just proof of the fact that someone can be famous and talented, but if he can' t behave well, no one will help him.

The Brave One is a hit !
by Claudia Sonea

The box office offered some surprises. "The Brave One" managed to earn $14 million at the box office, only to become later the top film of the weekend. It's a 2007 criminal drama movie starring Jodie Foster; it was released on September 14, 2007 in the United States. Neil Jordan, the director got the success formula with a vigilante movie, although the box office take was not that much, but it's normal for this time of the year when the transition between the summer blockbuster season and the fall Oscar rush takes place. The Warner Bros tale about a woman that loses her fiancée due to the beatings applied by three punks and after she kills a guy in the supermarket because he just murdered his wife and threatened her, she becomes a vigilante. Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers said that was the change that the R-rated film needed to attract both men and women, because usually movies about revenge are for men, but Jodie Foster succeeded to enlarge the public. Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros said that it had a great success despite the cash earning, because during summer it is all reduced to weekend success. 3:10 to Yuma was the last weekend box-office winner with 9, 2 million dollars. Next week movies Good Luck Chuck and Resident Evil should not pose too much risk for this weekend winner. The David Cronenberg crime thriller Eastern Promises, the Julie Taymor film Across the Universe and the Iraq war film In the Valley of Elah represent the Oscar buzz, even though their earnings were not extraordinary. Dergarabedian assures that their names will definitely be heard on the red carpet. According to Media By Numbers LLC gave a top ten of the movies record at the box-office: The Brave One- $14 million; 3:10 to Yuma- $9.2 million; Mr. Woodcock- $9.1 million; Dragon Wars- $5.4 million; Superbad- $5.2 million; Halloween- $5 million; The Bourne Ultimatum- $4.2 million; Balls of Fury- $3.3 million; Rush Hour 3- $3.3 million; Mr. Bean's Holiday- $2.7 million. Buy tickets good fellows and take the ones you love to spend some quality time. The movie's forecast is looking perfect.

60-year old O.J. Simpson is charged with robbery
by Corina Ciubotaru

O.J. Simpson is in trouble again. This time, he has been accused of six felonies: two counts of robbery with use of a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, burglary with a deadly weapon, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and coercion. Apparently, he and some accomplices broke into a hotel room in Las Vegas and stole some O.J. memorabilia from a former agent called Alfred Beardsley, who subsequently dropped the charges against the former NFL star. Apparently, nobody got hurt during the crime, even though firearms that were used have been recovered by the police. Simpson claims that the goods were originally stolen from him and that there were no guns used during the event; he had found the victims through an auction house owner who informed him of their presence in the hotel. If he is found guilty, the 60-year old football star faces up to 35 years in jail for each of the "robbery with use of a deadly weapon" counts. He wasn't convicted during his most famous trial in 1997, when he was accused of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, but he now owes the Goldman family $38 million as a result of the civil trial that followed. The Goldmans have also been given the rights to publish a book written by O.J. Simpson called "If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer", which went to number one on Amazon this Sunday. They are currently touring the country with this book, claiming it to be a confession.

Coalition aims to expose Shakespeare
by Delia Cruceru

A group of artists and scholars are debating that Shakespeare wasn't really Shakespeare. They formed a coalition named the Shakespeare Authorship Coalition and they don't believe that the Bard wrote all the plays and sonnets that made him famous around the world. The group has about 300 members, with members like two of Britain's most distinguished Shakespearean actors, Sir Derek Jacobi and Mark Rylance, the original artistic director of the new Globe Theatre. They launched a formal 'Declaration of Reasonable Doubt' about the identity of the Bard of Stratford-upon-Avon signed by 300 people and to provoke an academic debate. "I don't think anybody could do it on their own," said Jacobi, in reference to Shakespeare's 37 plays and 154 sonnets. The coalition says that the real author of the writings may be various writers such as Christopher Marlowe, Francis Bacon or the Earl of Oxford, Edward de Vere. They say that Shakespeare was born in 1500 in an illiterate lower-class household, pleading that it would be very hard to acquire detailed knowledge of language, the upper classes, an expertise in mathematics, history and law, and obscure references to places outside of England. "An author writes about his own experiences, his own life and personalities," Jacobi said. Twenty famous doubters from the past are on the coalition's list, including famous actors or writers such as Mark Twain, Orson Welles, Sir John Gielgud and Charlie Chaplin.

Luciano Pavarotti died at age 71
by Corina Ciubotaru

Luciano Pavarotti died today. Aged 71, the great tenor was suffering from pancreas cancer for years and had undergone an operation in New York in July 2006. He had been in a hospital a short while ago for an alleged pneumonia which was never confirmed by the artist's staff. He had previously canceled his farewell tour and was planning to resume it at the time of the surgery, but he never got to make that happen. He hadn't appeared in public since last year and was in his home in Modena at the time of death. Pavarotti will also be buried in his home city of Modena, as he was a great representative of Italian culture all over the world. Everyone knew who he is and everyone loved his strong, clear voice that delighted opera lovers time and time again, in roles like Alfredo, Nemorino, the Duke, Otello or Manrico. The tenor was the son of a baker who was also an amateur singer. The father and son both sang in the church choir and went on to win an international contest; this was the starting point of Luciano Pavarotti's singing career. His extraordinary voice became noticed fast and he made his solo debut in 1961, at the age of 26, as Rodolfo in La Boheme. In 1972 he completed a series of nine high C's in La Fille du Regiment and rose to instant stardom. He did charity work in the series of Pavarotti & Friends concerts and had traditional concerts with fellow tenors Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo, as "The three tenors". He was the father of three daughters. May he rest in Peace!

Crowd mourns Pavarotti in his hometown
by Delia Cruceru

The last great voice of Italian opera, as some might say, died early Thursday in his hometown Modena at the age of 71. Crowds and people around the world are mourning him, along with dignitaries from opera, politics and culture. He moved the world with his voice as he brought the opera music to the masses being well known for collaborating with opera singers but as well with pop celebrities as Elton John, Spice Girls, Bono and others. This summer was very hard for him, as his condition kept on worsens and after that deciding to come back to Modena where he died of pancreatic cancer. His wife, Nicoletta Mantovani, four daughter and his sisters stood aside his bed to be with him while he was taking his last breath. "Pavarotti was the last great Italian voice able to move the world," said Bruno Cagli, president of the Santa Cecilia National Academy in Rome. At Pavarotti's funeral service Andrea Bocelli will sing the hymn "Panis angelicus" but other celebrities have offered to give the maestro a musical send-off. U2 frontman Bono said Pavarotti was "a great volcano of a man who sang fire but spilled over with a love of life in all its complexity." His friend Placido Domingo said he "always admired the God-given glory of his voice â€" that unmistakable special timbre from the bottom up to the very top of the tenor range."

Apple, NBC at odds on pricing
by Delia Cruceru

The "marriage" between Apple and NBC Universal is at its end. NBC decided not to renew the contract selling their TV shows with Apple's iTunes. On Friday Apple announced that they will no longer sell programs for NBC Universal through iTunes, because NBC decided to raise the price for downloading to more than a double of its actual price. Apple refused to set the price for downloading at $4.99, their current price is $1.99. "We are disappointed to see NBC leave iTunes because we would not agree to their dramatic price increase," Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of iTunes, said in a statement. According to a New York Times report, NBC Universal notified Apple of its decision late on Thursday, but they are trying to reduce the piracy preventing pirated material from being uploaded to Apple's popular iPod, as the discussions will continue until December when the contract ends. NBC Universal declared that they accounted about 40 percent of iTunes downloads, but Apple said that NBC accounted for 30 percent of sales of iTunes TV shows. A Forrester analyst James McQuivey said: "NBC doesn't feel like iTunes is critical to its future business. And Apple doesn't feel like NBC is critical to their business going forward -- I think they're wrong."
