Palin on TV
by Claudia Sonea
An old Romanian proverb says “the country is burning and the old lady is brushing her hair”. That is the situation of Americans who seem to mistake entertainment with real issues. Although the economic crisis it is at its peaks and they should rather take the matter of the future elections serious, they would rather focus to see how the politicians fool around. Don’t be surprised then if the situation is worsening.
By now, it is well known that Sarah Palin, the governor of the U.S. state of Alaska, is the Republican Party's vice-presidential nominee for the presidential election of 2008. However, her latest achievement has nothing to do with politics, but rather with the entertainment industry. Because Obama canceled his appearance for the season's first show of "Saturday Night Live", Palin and her impersonator, Tina Fey, replaced him. McCain’s campaign accepted a day before the show and after it the presidential candidate congratulated her for the way she presented. Also the show had the best audience in 14 years; about 17 million people watched the first appearance of Palin’s as vice president nominee.
Palin was very relaxed while maintaining a dignifying position. No one managed to get a picture with the two most gossiped women, but surely they will not give up because it doesn’t matter that Palin will influence the future of economy, it is important that she has a cute image on the screen and people talk a lot about her. In the end it is all cut down to pure image and no essence in politics and in the end we complain that the country is decaying and we wonder why. Why indeed?
