Atonement & the best novel adaption of recent times?
by Barbora Misakova

I would bet that almost every young girl but also older woman dreamed about living in the movie. Now try to imagine you live in 1935 and you are a young and beautiful lady living with your wealthy parents in enormous mansion. But I would say this is the only positive thing on being Cecilia Tallis. Atonement is a new romantic drama based on Ian McEwan's novel and directed by Joe Wright who was also director of Pride and Prejudice very nice adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. This time we are going to be witnesses of the story where one person can change the course of several lives. Atonement tells a story about young Cecilia Tallis who fell in love with Robbie Turner, son of family's housekeeper but her family didn't want to see them together and torn them apart. Ok, ok you think I am going to persuade you how great romance is waiting for you in this movie. I think I have to disappoint you. When you click on any web site which has something to do with movie and move reviews and look at this movie, you will see many positive critics. Let's look on some of them. Hollywood Reporters regards this movie for "the best novel adaptations of recent times" and Peter Bradshaw from British Guardian says it is very "clever, ambitious, compassionate picture". Killer Movie Reviews doesn't save on compliments when declared: "As close to perfection as mere mortals can aspire to." But not only movie itself deserves appreciation. Keira Knightley and James McAvoy who acted the main characters do their job perfectly and compliments are wallowing from everywhere. Gary Brown from Houston Community Newspapers said the acting was superb and The Movie Chicks.com continues by adding that "James McAvoy and Keira Knightley are intoxicating together."I don't know if I persuaded you about the quality of this picture, but I decided & I want to see it and I will do it in a very short time. If it wouldn't be good how it could get seven Oscar nominations, won Golden Globe and also dominates British Academy Films Awards with 14 nominations?

Lessingova ziskala Nobelovu cenu
by Zuzana Moravcova

Tazila najma z obdobia straveneho v Afrike, skumajuc rozdelenie bielych a ciernych.

The Queen
by Zuzana Valkova

What do you think of, when you hear the name Madonna. I'm almost 100% sure that it's not the one from Bible. She is an icon, the big M, the queen of pop, the material girl. Yes; the press also uses these names for her. Press loves her. During her life she was a great object to write about. All her mistakes, scandals, relationships, almost every step she did were inspirations for newsmakers. She was born in the United States. Her father was Italian, her mother was Canadian and died quite young. She was raised in a strict Catholic/Italian background. She always wanted to be a dancer, but her destiny was to be a singer. She moved to New York and here she found her success. They noticed her and she became a star. She was something different, she was sexy, scandalous, and she spoke about everything. People loved her dance moves and her songs. She was the missing piece in the industry. She has totally released 10 studio albums and she has been on 7 tours. It wasn't enough to be just a singer and dancer. She decided to try her luck in movies. But except movie Evita, this wasn't very good decision. She is much better in the music field. Now, she is a mother of three kids, good wife and she is loved by millions of fans. She is trying to help other people and we all agree with her. Why not, when she has enough money. There is no doubt, that she is the queen of pop. She is one of the best selling female music artists all over the world. Last year she was the best, actually.

Is anybody going to rescue "drowned" Spears?
by Lenka Filipova

Early in the morning on Thursday, Britney Spears was taken by a couple of policemen to UCLA Medical Center. She was committed to psychiatric treatment. A professional team of caregivers were attributed to do their best to help Britney to get her out of swirl she has been in since the divorce in November 2006.Spear's mother was spotted to leave the psychiatric hospital center before half past five a. m. When being questioned about her daughter's condition, she told that she was all right. This is her second commitment for 72 days stay in a psychiatric center. However, the previous one lasted only two days following erratic incidents even more strange than ever before. It is considered legal to place a person on an involuntary sojourn for 72 days if the person is being believed he/she is dangerous to others or even to himself/herself. Despite of the fact that the observation is legitimate, the treatment itself is not allowed until it is signed by the person and giving his/her documentary permission .Since the time of Britney's and Federline's breakdown, there have been many weird people surrounding Britney. For instance, Sam Lufi, a kind of her manager as he described himself. He proclaimed that Spears is going to attend some kind of treatment soon. Another one is Adnan Ghalib, who works as a paparazzi photographer, declared himself as Britney's boyfriend just after his wife asked for a legal separation. He was present while she was taken to the hospital.Britney seems to lost all her mother sentiment when she neglected the scheduled child-custody case. Here the question comes, what is the price of the fame? Is there anybody who will help lost Britney to find the way back to "normal" life?

It is not so easy to be a commoner
by Barbora Misakova

There are stories written or still more directed into beautiful romantic movies which are saying how young and ordinary girl from village, although these days still more are from big cities, meets young and wealthy boy and they both fell in love. After few weeks of dating she found out he is not as ordinary as he pretended & he is a prince! She doesn't want to see him nor talk to him, but after few days or weeks she realizes she loves him and doesn't want to live without him. So sweet, isn't it? I don't know what you think about these types of movies or stories but to be honest they get on my nerves. Marry someone from royal family is not such a fairy-tale.This time it looks that someone takes it serious and doesn't want to write about happiness but wants to show reality. John Burnham Schwartz, an American novelist, wrote Bicycle Days, Claire Marvel and Reservation Road which was a basement for making a movie with the same name. Schwartz's books are quite popular and were translated into more than 15 languages. These days he comes with something new & The Commoner. This novel says story about Haruko, non-aristocratic young girl who became the Empress of Japan, and to be honest writer didn't make another sweet story.Imagine you are living your life; you are studying, going to the cinema with friends, reading books and going out for walks with your dog. But then, your life changed and it "doesn't even resemble life." This novel is exactly about this. Haruko, daughter of a businessman fell in love with the Crown Prince and after wedding he is terrorized by her mother-in-low. All her life changed - "every single thing is monitored and every single thing has a protocol. It's as though you've been walking along and suddenly fallen down a well that's 5,000 feet deep." This literary piece doesn't want to criticize or do harm to anyone, it only shows how the monarchy works and reflects all traditions which help to it to survive the whole centuries.

Hollywood big stars left out of the Oscars
by Zuzana Zelenakova

The Oscar ceremony is second most watched event annually, the first one being the Super Bowl. However, the 80th Academy Awards had only 32 million viewers. Why the word only? Well, in 1998 with "Titanic" winning the best film award about 55 million people tuned in. This year's Oscars were a bit special though. Majority of winners were outside of the United States and so big stars of Hollywood fell flat this time. But Joel and Ethan Coen who are from Minnesota we must exclude from this. As expected their drama "No country for old men" based on Cormac McCarthy's praised novel won the best picture category, and the best director, adapted screenplay and the best supporting actor in addition. The latter prize went to Spanish actor Javier Bardem in the role of a creepy assasin. He was the first Spanish who won Oscar in 80-year Academy Awards history. An Irish actor Daniel Day Lewis won the best actor category for another one of his negative characters in "There will be blood". Best actress went to French performer Marion Cotillard for brilliant portrayal of famous chanteuse Edith Piaf in "La vie en rose". British actress living in Scotland Tilda Swinton got the best supporting actress prize for the role in "Michael Clayton". "Hollywood is built on Europeans," she said."Go back and look. I'm just really said I couldn't give my speech in Gaelic. Don't tell everybody. We're everywhere." Recently unknown Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard took the best original song Oscar for their duet "Falling slowly" from low-budget movie "Once". Box office hit "Ratatouille" became the best animated film. Austrian "The Counterfeiters" from Second World War period was the best foreign language film.

American Idol heading to Disneyworld?
by Zuzana Moravcova

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is planning to create a new attraction - live performances based on "American Idol" at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. "Our goal is to try to recreate the excitement of those 24 people who show up on that 'American Idol' stage. We believe many, many viewers want to know exactly how that feels, and we're going to try to reproduce that feeling for them," said Disney Parks chairman Jay Rasulo to The Associated Press. The attraction has yet not been named, and its details are still being worked out. The whole project is supposed to start by the end of 2008. Theme park guests aged 14 and up will be allowed to audition for a Disney casting producer, who will then select the most talented or entertaining contestants to appear in one of the park's "Idol" stage shows. About six to eight shows are expected every day.The Hollywood Studios provided their theater space for the live performers. Those, who receive the most audience votes, will compete in a grand finale show at the end of each day. Daily champions will win a special front-of-the-line pass for "American Idol" at a regional audition.Instead of famous American Idol judges - Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell & it is likely that three audience members will be selected to evaluate the performers in front of a live audience. A live host will keep the Idol-like show moving. Backstage, the performers will receive singing tips from a vocal coach, and hair and makeup treatment from a stylist. Disney winners will not be given any special treatment during the real audition, just the ability to skip ahead.

Couragous Angelina
by Lenka Lehenova

Everybody knows Hollywood as a city of red carpet and a city full of popular stars and movies. There are many actors and actress who try to fall over backwards in show biz †and then to become rich and have a lot of money. I like famous people who are interested in charity, I can say that I admire them. It is nice that they realize that they have a lot of money and they want to give it to people who really need it. These stars are popular and thanks to their concerts or some shows they can earn much money for charity. Maybe some of them are interested in it only because of their image but it is not case of Angelina Jolie. †She is not only perfect actress but also one of †the stars who are really interested in charity and want to give money for the right thing. She is quite popular for it. She also adopted Maddox and Zahara from Ethiopia where habitants are fighting with famine and poverty. Angelina is very couragous woman. The verification of it is her visit to Baghdad. Iraqi capital is a place where famous and rich rarely come to visit it but Angelina went there for her work as a United Nations goodwill ambassador to demand help for people displaced by the war. She met with Iraqi migration officials to accent the urgency of a coherent plan for the more than two million internally displaced Iraqis who are beginning to come back to their homes. †She also had lunch with American troops. She didn't have a problem to grab a red plastic tray at the mess hall. I think that Angelina is interested in right things and she knows that she can spend her money in better ways than is shopping.

Grammy Awards Show
by Lenka Lehenova

A lot of Americans couldn't wait for Grammy Awards. It is very popular telecast and viewers could watch it on Sunday's night. It has been 50th jubilee of its broadcasting. Nielsen Media Research is maybe a little disappointed that the show was watched only by 17.5 million people. If later estimates confirm that number it will be the third least-watched Grammy Awards show. Do you want to know who triumphed? There are names like Amy Winehouse, Herbie Hancock and Kanye West. Amy, a 24 & year- old British singer is known and popular for her old-soul voice and image of sinner with typical tattoo. She is drug addict and it was also reason why she wasn't allowed to participate in Grammy. Although she has got visa to USA †finally, she stayed in London. It didn't stop her to win the most trophies. She couldn't belive that she has won five awards from six. Viewers could enjoy her songs "Rehab" and "You Know I'm No Good" which she sang via satellite from London's club. Then she dedicated her record of the year trophy to her parents, jailed husband and London. Hancock and his "River: The Joni Letters" won album of the year. He said that it had been immeasurable how surprised he was. Kanye West also has been on the stage quite often. He won four from eight trophies but he'd made no secret of disappointing after his losing out in the album of the year category. Alicia Keys began the evening with singing "Learnin' The Blues", which she sang alongside archival footage of Frank Sinatra. She also won award for her hit "No One", which she took from hands of her colleague Prince. There are many famous names which has been through Grammy Awards show, for example Bruce Springsteen, Beyonce, Tina Turner, Keely Smith and so on.

Three men stole paintings worth $163 million
by Zuzana Moravcova

In Switzerland, three men robbed private gallery of impressionism masterpieces, and ran away with paintings by Van Gogh, Cezanne and Monet. The armed robbers wearing ski masks entered the museum a half-hour before its was due to close on Sunday, and in a few minutes collected four precious paintings from the exhibition hall, said the police. One of the men spoke German with a Slavic accent.Worldwide known and historically important masterpieces - Claude Monet's "Poppy field at Vetheuil," Edgar Degas' "Ludovic Lepic and his Daughter," Vincent van Gogh's "Blooming Chestnut Branches" and Paul Cezanne's "Boy in the Red Waistcoat" were stolen from the E.G. Buehrle private collection. Their value reaches $163.2 million.According to Marco Cortesi, police spokesman, it is the largest art robbery in Switzerland's history and one of the biggest ever in Europe. "This is an entirely new dimension in criminal culture," he said.Especially the stolen Van Gogh has special value because it is one of the significant works that he painted in the last six weeks of the artist's life, when his mental illness made him commit suicide. The art collection of Emil Georg B_πhrle (1890-1956), a Zurich industrialist, is one of the most important private European art collections of 20th-century. Switzerland has a large number of outstanding art collections, but some of them have been hit by thefts and robberies over the years. Last week, two oil paintings by Pablo Picasso were stolen from a gallery near Zurich. The police said the Picasso theft may have been connected with the Buehrle robbery.

Non-profit-making organizations, famous or successful people or several companies all around the world are often dealing with preparing or running different auctions, which should help old, ill, befallen people, or easily people in need.Similar idea raised also in the heads of Bono and Hirst, two years ago, when they were together on holiday in the south of France. The biggest art world's stars of these times, like Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst, are included in this huge project of auction. Earnings from this project will be assigned to provide AIDS relief in Africa. This auction is located in New York and it is expected to bring up approximately $29 million. Advertisements won Superbowl 2008
by Tatiana Hadarova

American Superbowl is almost every year the most watched event on television. Superbowl 2008, played on 3. February at University of Phoenix stadium in Glendale, Arizona was this year watched by 97.5 million of people. With the american tradition, sport mentality and these great ratings it is probably the goldest mine for TV and also for commercial makers. Superbowl is usually broadcasted by channel FOX, which sells its broadcasting time for an average price $2.7 million for a 30-second spot & conditions quite incomparable to Slovak's. Advertising polls showed that good laugh is above all for U.S. audiences. As a result that the best weapon of commercials is sense of humor are the five most successful commercials of Superbowl 2008 chosen by USA Today's Ad Meter. The highest mark scored spot for Budweiser beer showing a Dalmatian training an underdog Clydesdale horse & the beer' s mascot. Other four places went to ads from Fedex, Bridgestone, Doritos and Bud Light. Another reviews rated commercials from E-trade or Tide, which featured a talking stain. Among the bloggers, the first place went to Pepsi commercial with singer Justin Timberlake. Professor Tim Calkins from Northwestern University said, that "overall it was a great year for Superbowl advertising." However, there were also companies which spent millions of dollars for their forgettable or poorly received advertisements, like for example an animated spot showing two panda bears worried about going out of business. As always, Superbowl has its winners and losers, as well as in the level of commercials. And by the way, New York Giants won over New England Patriots.

Hollywood writers are voting on contract
by Zuzana Krskova

A Three-month-old strike of Writers Guild of America has moved to its end. Writers are expected to return to work as soon as possible.A three-year tentative contract was recommended by guild leaders to members and they have been asked to vote separately on a quick end to the walkout. Contract secures writers a share of the burgeoning digital- media market, including compensation for Internet- delivered TV shows and movies.West guild's board of directors and the East Coast guild's council called for a membership ratification vote. It will be conducted by mail over about two weeks. They have also agreed, that they will accept the contract."If they (producers) get paid, we get paid. This contract makes that a reality," said Verrone, and added ,"it is not all we hoped for and it is not all we deserved."Verrone also said, that the guild's major bargaining concession to studios was agreeing to take unionization of animation and reality TV shows off the table, and the guild is still interested in pursuing those goals. This spring, after strike's end, there are expected many hit series to return. Shows with marginal audience numbers could be canceled, or may not return until fall."It will be all hands on deck for the writing staff." Said Chris Mundy, co-executive producer of CBS' drama "Criminal Minds" and also added, " It's a real balancing act, to get up and running as fast as possible, but not let the quality slip."For streamed programs in the deal's first two years, writers would get the highest flat free of about $1,200. Then will they get a percentage of a distributor's gross in year three. It remains at the flat payment rate.

Why does soccer player cost more then a writer?
by Martina Harvanova

Just as the top sport players in soccer, football or ice hockey tend to switch the home clubs, so the artists change their home stage, movie company or publisher. However, there is an interesting fact that follows the transfer & the enormously different values of the main subjects. While the probably most known sportsman on the globe, David Beckham, was worth $50 million while his first transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2003 and with the current value reaching unbelievable rates, other publicly known people and their skills and knowledge don't cost even one percent of the Beckham's value. Maybe you have started thinking why somebody should be more valuable than a person whose name has actually become a worldwide famous brand. Well, there are some who dispose of the potential, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to meet the realization. A great novelist, the first ever writer that won the Pulitzer Prize and PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in a single year, Richard Ford can be one of those. Although his famous works, such as The Sportswriter, Independence Day or The Lay of the Land, didn't remain forgotten both among critics and readers, his value still doesn't mirror his potential. The 64-year old novelist decided to switch the publisher despite the 17-year fruitful relationship. Therefore, Alfred A. Knopf has been left and switched to Ecco, a literary imprint of HarperCollins. Richard Ford chose the new publisher for his three next books - for two novels and a collection of short stories. His first novel with Ecco, scheduled for 2010, is tentatively titled "Canada". The story should sketch the Saskatchewan prairie and local issues of revenge and violent retribution. The question is, who is more worthy. Is it a soccer player whose day-to-day practice costs much physical strength, or an intelligent writer who mediates his message to masses? The social justice can't be seen so easily and therefore, the financial equity won't be solved. It is just a thing to conceive.

Carmen & opera with blood and feelings
by Barbora Misakova

At the beginning I would like to say I am not a big fan of the opera format but on the other hand my opinion is that every part of culture should be explored during our life. That's why I decided I want to go to opera-house to see some classical opera piece and of course I chose Carmen. I was sitting in a very tight part of auditorium where I could hardly spread my long feet but the worst thing was that one woman was sitting near me and she got on my nerves in a very short time. As she had a big hobby in saying "shhhh" she did it every time when someone was quietly talking during performance. Anyway I would like to tell you more about this opera and story it is saying about.Carment belongs to the best known operas around the world and its melodies are known even to children. This French opera was written by Georges Bizet and says a story about beautiful and rebellious gypsy girl Carmen and young soldier Don José who fell in love with her. After many barriers they ran away together and but their past reached them soon and lead to Carmen's death when her lover Don José killed her because of her new lover Escamillio. The first premiere of Carmen was on March 3, 1875 in Paris where critics denounced this piece as "immoral" and "superficial". The first and original Carmen was played by Célestine Galli-Marié and Don José was played by Paul Lhérie and even the first critics were negative this opera has success even in 21st century and the only thing which changes are the names of tenors playing in it. These days when Carmen is played in The Metropolitan Opera in New York the main characters are played by Marcelo Alvarez and Olga Borodina. While Alvarez had some problems at the beginning but in the final act he singed clearly, Borodina as Carmen was good but some critics say she could be more "alluring". Also Italian Lucio Gallo was criticized for his portraying Escamillo & the typicall macho swagger of toreador was missing. On the other hand children's chorus charmed everyone sitting in the audience and so it deserves a big appreciation of critics.

Chris Cantell Discusses Entertainment: The end is nigh
by Zuzana Zelenakova

People working in film industry have a reason to cheer up finally. It seems the end of the Hollywood writers strike that started on November 5, 2007 is near. The Writers Guild of America have been striking against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, key issues being DVD residuals and compensation for the distribution of the films and TV shows through the Internet. So far the strike have cost the industry $1 billion in lost earnings. Only for the area of Los Angeles it is estimated $650 million in wages. On February 2, 2008 a significant progress in the talks has been reported and it is possible that by the end of the week the contract proposal may be announced. If the union leaders will approve of the contract presented to them it might be the end of three-months-old clash. "They reached agreement on the major terms, and now it is a question of reducing it to (contract) language, which we're all hoping goes well and continues in the same spirit of progress that the talks have experienced so far," said the anonymous source. These recent media reports have definitely pleased Hollywood, where thousands of people are currently unemployed because of the strike, from actors to directors, make-up artists or set designers. The evening of Oscar nominees in Beverly Hills had been marked by positive and confident statements from stars and studio executives. "it looks very good," actor George Clooney said. "There's a lot of strike fatigue out there."

Chris Cantell Discusses Entertainment: The Spice Girls Apologized
by Jana Passova

On Wednesday, The Spice Girls apologized to their fans for tour interrupting. The concerts in China, South Africa, Australia and Argentina had to be cancelled. The tour of famous girl group is finishing in February. According to speculations this annoyance was caused by family and personal problems. On Wednesday appeared on Spice girls official Web side a one-minute long video with apology. The reunion tour began in Canada, Vancouver on Sunday. This concert was the first one in last nine years where took a part all the five members, Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Chisholm, Melanie Brown and Emma Bunton. They performed 22 songs on a stage. Some of sang songs were also from the time of their solo careers. The whole performance was combined with well done choreographies. Even today they don't lost nothing of the former "Girl Power". All girls seemed very comfortable except Victoria Beckham. Maybe it was caused by not very comfortable outfit. Also her moves and dancing was kind of high-strung and she looked like she had to concentrate a lot. Spice Girls seemed to be happy that could perfume together again. The show didn't get along several collective hugs. The performance was, as 10 years ago, more about show and entertainment than great singing. The Spice Girls were formed in London in 1994. Their debut single "Wannabe" came up in 1996. This song spent at the top of the United Kingdom Singles Chart for 7 weeks. The Spice Girls became idols for many young girls from the whole planet. The end of the group started after Geri Halliwell departure on May in 1998. All plans of the group were interrupted.

The Mystery of Francis Bacon
by Livia Necasova

We did learn something new today, again.Sure I know who Francis Bacon was..at least I thought I knew.Well who would think that there are two of them?!Same name, different centuries, different speciality? I only know the philosopher one,but let`s focus on Francis Bacon-the painter now.He had a quite interesting life.He was an Irish, born in Dublin in the beginning of 20th century. One of many kids,father,mother-all inclusive. With the start of the World War I. the family was pending between Dublin and London, which sure was stressfull for the little Francis boy.It wasn't easy period for him. He`s been to a boarding school but fled from there-a first sign of an artistic soul.Besides he was gay and that must`ve been hard to admit in that time. His pictures are somehow dark and twisty, shaped by war, violence and destruction..He survived two world wars after all.In the centre of his attention stands the human body."Triptych 1974-1977" has been sold yesterday by the auction house Christie`s for unbelievable 26.3 million pounds, but they`ve been hoping for more. But its still the second highest amount of money paid for one of his paintings.I think its amazing that someone is even willing to pay that much money for just a painting."Triptych" is one if his most important works, dedicated to a memory of his lover George Dyer, who commited suicide in Paris. He have had exhibitions all over the world,Tate Gallery(London),Guggenheim Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art(New York),Art Institute(Chicago),National Gallery(Berlin) and some major exihibitions in Spain,Japan,France and in other cities.I`m not gonna miss his next one, make sure u do the same.I think it might be worth it.

Magic Factory
by Claudia Sonea

Hollywood is back business and the wonder factory is going to make millions of people happy because the writers' strike that lasted 100 days was voted on Tuesday to be lifted by members of the Writers Guild of America. All networks and studios are eager for new TV episodes.Sitcoms like CBS drama "NCIS", CBS' "Numb3rs" and others have been halted during the strike and their actual production won't begin until scripts have been completed, which could take days or even weeks. Sid Ganis, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which stages the Oscars, is the one who most benefit the end of boycott by writers and actors because the vote by East and West Coast guild members means the Academy Awards will be held as planned on February 24.There were 3492 votes in favor of ending the strike and only 283 against it. A total of 10,500 workers were involved in the strike and they forced countless other industry workers into unemployment because of the walkout. Still the end did not mean that the union's board of directors had get to an agreement with the networks. The negotiations will continue on mail and at the meetings with a final conclusion on 25 February- most probably a "happy ending" due to the enthusiasm for the proposed contract expressed at guild meetings held last weekend in New York and Los Angeles. Moonves was among the media executives who helped broker a deal after negotiations between the guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents studios, collapsed in December, stated to Associated Press that the negotiations seem to be on the right track and they proposed an agreement according to which writers would get a maximum flat fee of about $1,200 for programs streamed on the Internet in the deal's first two years and then get 2 percent of a distributor's gross in year three, increased residual payments for movies and TV programs downloaded from the Internet. †††††††††††††††From November 5 a wide range of businesses dependent on work from studios suffered because of the strike and the economy of Los Angeles County, the home of most of the nation's TV and film production, lost $3.2 billion in direct and indirect costs, according to a new estimate from Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp. In 1988 took place the last writers' strike and lasted 153 days generating a lost of $500 million in lost wages. The contract between studios and the Screen Actors Guild will expire in June, according to Jonathan Handel, an entertainment attorney with the Los Angeles firm of TroyGould and a former associate counsel for the writers' guild and that is why there is imperious necessary for a deal to be signed.

Chris Cantell Discusses Entertainment: Pay for your dinner and help poor children
by Barbora Misakova

In the time of wars, violence and conflicts there still exists the idea of helping others and for this reason many various charities were founded and every year lot of celebrities give money for helping those who need it the most. This time very unusual one took place to help poor and sick children around the world. This type of charity and commercial promotion was organized by United Nations on Wednesday night and celebrities such as Madonna, Drew Barrymore, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Salma Hayek, Dita Von Teese and Tea Leoni and Lucy Liu who are the UNICEF Ambassadors. All these celebrities paid from $2.500 to $10 000 to dine such delicacies as "grappa-cured salmon, wild striped bass, tart of goat cheese, foraged mushrooms, truffled mashed potatoes and sticky toffee pudding with crème fraiche" and the whole night happening was moderated by pop queen Madonna who said it was a honor for her to work with UNICEF. First of all Madonna introduced children from Africa and played the video which introduced Raising Malawi, organization founded by her in 2006 to help orphans in African states. After that music show made by Rihanna, Timbaland and Alica Keys followed.Celebrity and this kind of snobbish night couldn't be whole without very glistening auction. If you were very wealthy and had redundant $100,000 then you could buy for example privilege of hanging out at Yankee Stadium with Alex Rodriguez or private hour playing soccer with David Beckham, just as Tom Cruise did. You could also bid a trip to Paris where you could go for a walk into vineyards and after that have a lunch with very precious company consisted of Francois-Henri Pinault and Salma Hayek and this whole trip will be just for a symbolic price of $120,000. And if you think all this is nothing, try to bid to tour with Madonna or take a dance class with her and Gwyneth Paltrow for $600 000!Honestly, I don't think so any of these offers would be attracting for me, but on the other hand I have to admit it was all done for a good purpose & to help about half of one million orphans from African countries. During this glamorous night celebrities raised 3.7 million American dollars which will be split among Raising Malawi and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. All celebrities well satisfied because they had fun and also gave a financial help to those sectors where it's needed. So I there is no reason for criticizing it.
