Hollywood writers are voting on contract
by Zuzana Krskova
A Three-month-old strike of Writers Guild of America has moved to its end. Writers are expected to return to work as soon as possible.A three-year tentative contract was recommended by guild leaders to members and they have been asked to vote separately on a quick end to the walkout. Contract secures writers a share of the burgeoning digital- media market, including compensation for Internet- delivered TV shows and movies.West guild's board of directors and the East Coast guild's council called for a membership ratification vote. It will be conducted by mail over about two weeks. They have also agreed, that they will accept the contract."If they (producers) get paid, we get paid. This contract makes that a reality," said Verrone, and added ,"it is not all we hoped for and it is not all we deserved."Verrone also said, that the guild's major bargaining concession to studios was agreeing to take unionization of animation and reality TV shows off the table, and the guild is still interested in pursuing those goals. This spring, after strike's end, there are expected many hit series to return. Shows with marginal audience numbers could be canceled, or may not return until fall."It will be all hands on deck for the writing staff." Said Chris Mundy, co-executive producer of CBS' drama "Criminal Minds" and also added, " It's a real balancing act, to get up and running as fast as possible, but not let the quality slip."For streamed programs in the deal's first two years, writers would get the highest flat free of about $1,200. Then will they get a percentage of a distributor's gross in year three. It remains at the flat payment rate.
