Carmen & opera with blood and feelings
by Barbora Misakova

At the beginning I would like to say I am not a big fan of the opera format but on the other hand my opinion is that every part of culture should be explored during our life. That's why I decided I want to go to opera-house to see some classical opera piece and of course I chose Carmen. I was sitting in a very tight part of auditorium where I could hardly spread my long feet but the worst thing was that one woman was sitting near me and she got on my nerves in a very short time. As she had a big hobby in saying "shhhh" she did it every time when someone was quietly talking during performance. Anyway I would like to tell you more about this opera and story it is saying about.Carment belongs to the best known operas around the world and its melodies are known even to children. This French opera was written by Georges Bizet and says a story about beautiful and rebellious gypsy girl Carmen and young soldier Don José who fell in love with her. After many barriers they ran away together and but their past reached them soon and lead to Carmen's death when her lover Don José killed her because of her new lover Escamillio. The first premiere of Carmen was on March 3, 1875 in Paris where critics denounced this piece as "immoral" and "superficial". The first and original Carmen was played by Célestine Galli-Marié and Don José was played by Paul Lhérie and even the first critics were negative this opera has success even in 21st century and the only thing which changes are the names of tenors playing in it. These days when Carmen is played in The Metropolitan Opera in New York the main characters are played by Marcelo Alvarez and Olga Borodina. While Alvarez had some problems at the beginning but in the final act he singed clearly, Borodina as Carmen was good but some critics say she could be more "alluring". Also Italian Lucio Gallo was criticized for his portraying Escamillo & the typicall macho swagger of toreador was missing. On the other hand children's chorus charmed everyone sitting in the audience and so it deserves a big appreciation of critics.
