Strike is over!
by Eva Matova

After days of quarreling and arguing between the Broadway stagehands and producers, the admirers of musicals may celebrate! The negotiations came to an end and after 19 quiet days in the avenue the actors enjoyed the applause of the audience again. According to Yahoo news "tourists, actors, stagehands, restaurants, musicians, hot dog vendors & basically anyone affected by Broadway & were all thrilled about the return of musicals and plays" So if you have some spare time, you should spend a lovely night enjoying one of your favorite plays! Wicked is an based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, inspired by the classic story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and it has been the most popular play in Broadway for a while. If you are an admirer of The Monty Pytons, check out the play Spamalot, a story of king Arthur and his knights searching for the holy grail. It has many fans in Broadway and I am sure it will soon become the most favorite play of all Broadway stagehands. Wonder why? Because it helped them to learn that the best thing to do is to always look at the bright side of the life! Wicked !

A lot of spare monay?
by Eva Matova

A famous painting by JMW Turner, an English romantic artist who laid the foundations of Impressionism, is waiting at the Sotheby's auction house in London for its buyer, as the present owner of this precious piece of art decided to sell it. If you have no plans for December 5 and so far no idea how to spend your millions, go and get it. You would not be the first one who decided to spend a breathtaking sum of money for an amazing piece of art. Unbelievably high was the price of a rare blue diamond bought at an auction. A 6.04 carat stone was sold for $7.98 million and became the most expensive diamond ever, as it mastered the previous record of $ 926, 000 per carat. The most expensive painting sold by the Sotheby's is a work of Pierre-Auguste Renoir named Bal au moulin de la Galette, Montmartre. The painting was sold for $122.8 million and its original price was being $78.1 million. Do not worry, even though you are not a millionare, there is always a hope you will once become rich. This happened to Elizabeth Gibson, a resident of NY city. Check out the video!

Lawsuit are in Fashion
by Barbora Kasparova

Celebrities usually lead very complicated lives, and yet there are people in the world, who instead of making it easier for them, they make their living of bittering their lives. British rock singer and songwriter Morrissey has had a recent experience with that. British magazine New Musical Express (NME) has published an interview with him, according to which he supposedly stated that Britain is losing its identity due to the growing number of immigrants. His statements took to a milder nature, when he added: "so I'm not sitting here saying it's a terrible thing, I'm saying it's a reality and to many people it's shocking" (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article2967758.ece). Why is he to sue the magazine for libel and defamation now? That is not clear enough. Is he mad that they published his words, or does he claim he never said them? His case is not an isolated one, of course. Many more celebs in Britain have sued the media, including Cameron Diaz, Naomi Campbell, Keira Knightley, and David Beckham, etc. Moreover, the figures by Sweet & Maxwell's legal information service from 2006 show, that the number of American stars suing the British media have increased, mainly because of the British court's being more favorable to the celebrity claims. Faberge egg breaks the price record
by Daniela Simkova

A Faberge gold-and-enamel egg, which has been in ownership of the Rothschild baking family for 100 hundred years, broke the price record of $18.6 million at the Christie's auction house. Peter Carl Faberge made this incredible piece of Russian art for the Russia's imperial family. His first assigned translucent egg was made for the Empress Maria Fedorovna as a Easter gift from her husband Russian Czar Alexander III. The empress loved this egg that encouraged czar to make an order to Faberge Company every single Easter since then. Faberge Company produced more than 50 of these translucent eggs for the Russia's imperial family since 1885, until the Russian Revolution had started in the year of 1917. A Faberge pink egg has a clock and cockerel coverd by diamonds. Cockerel does its little preformance. It pops up every hour and flaps its wing and nods its head, which lasts about 15 seconds. Christie's said: "The Rothschild Faberge egg is an extraordinary work of art, and we are extremely pleased that it has realised a record price which reflects its absolute quality." A Faberge egg, originally a gift from Beatrice Ephrussi to her fiance, was sold to a Russian auctioneer in short time of 10 minutes.

Screenwriters support each other
by Natalia Holvova

American TV shows productions are closed for almost a month now. Writers are striking for better payments for their work. And without writers there are no shows. Fans are disappointed but they can understand the situation. Who decide what kind of job is paid more and which one is less valuable? Why should art be underrated? The Writers guilt of America is in strike since November 5th and now they've got worldwide support. Important screenwriters from Europe and Australia walked out on the street and in front of important filming buildings and demonstrated just to support American writers. Even though the situation of the European and Australian writers is different and they don't need to strike for themselves right now, this gesture of solidarity is meritorious. The different groups of the Writers guilt around the world think that even writing is important enough to be paid properly. There is a lot of position participating in movie creating process and in the mind of population maybe actors, directors and producers seem more important. But without the story, actual dialogs and the plot, there is no space for any other people. If there is no story, no characters, there is no need for actors. If there is no story and no actors there is no need for directors and if there is none of these than there is no need for money and producers. This kind of strike can take long weeks maybe months, we as TV shows and movies fans can just optimistic wait for the beneficial decision for all who contribute on the strike.

Big Frank.
by Zuzana Valkova

When you think about one of the biggest singers ever, who would it be? Elvis? Ok, he was great. Who else? Bono? Yea, he is great too. Next one. Frank Sinatra? This could be right. Why Frank? Because he was first, he was on the stage before all the other people, who are well known these days. He was the first big singer and actor, who was loved by millions of people, but also hated by the rest. Although he was handicapped, he had ruptured eardrum, he became musical and movie star. He started to sing in small music clubs and local radio stations. After few years, he got his first movie role. It was musical Ship Ahoy, but he wasn't named in the finishing captions. In the 1940s and 1950s. his carrier wasn't so successful. It changed after he got Oscar for his role in movie From here to eternity. It was war drama and he played supporting role. Other famous movies where he played were Manchurian Candidate and Von Ryan's Express in 1960s. His music carrier started to be popular again, and in this time he had many famous songs. He worked with many good musicians, who helped him to create this music and had duets with him. He had his big show in Las Vegas, where he was performing until his 80s. He died in 1998 in Los Angeles, with his fourth wife beside him.

Piercophrenic ?
by Eva Matova

Piercophrenic ? It is becoming a custom that famous Hollywood stars are not being charged for legal offence. After Lindsey Lohan who was accused of causing a car accident and Paris Hilton driving under the influence of alcohol it is now the former James Bond who was set free after a scuffle. Actor Pierce Brosnan was lately accused of hitting a photographer outside a Mexican restaurant in Malibu. The incident happened when the photographer tried to compliment Brosnan's movies but instead of an appropriate answer to his question ended up with a couple of bruises. According to the Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney James Garrison the actor will not face any charges over accusation as "there is insufficient evidence to prove this case to a jury". Brosnan has not broken the law before which may lead to speculations he had confused himself with a fictive character of a well-known spy James Bond. So Pierce, never ever attack innocent people with guns and bombs and remember that harming the others is not right. And please, do not introduce yourself as "My name is Bond, James Bond." Your real name is Pierce Brosnan.

Best friend or killer.
by Zuzana Valkova

Many of you have a dog. It is a member of your family, good or best friend of you. You spend much time with him/her and care about him/her. But there are also people, who like their dogs only because they earn big money for them. Dog is only a special trained instrument not a friend. I am sure, that you have already heard about dog fighting. It is illegal blood 'sport', practised just for entertainment or gambling. It is a fight between two dogs, in which one of the dogs wins and second one is looser or dead. They fight in a special fenced ring, until one of them is too weak to fight, or looses the will. The fight can be stopped by owner or by doctor, who can judge the condition of the dogs. Often happens, that one of the dog is too injured and his owner has to destroy him. It is a big loss for him because he loses his income. As I said before, this 'sport' is illegal. Police can arrest people who own these dogs, and also people who are on the fights. It is almost impossible bring these saved dogs back to normal society, because they are used to suffer and are more agressive than other dogs. This kind of abusing is one of the most serious. There are many organizations, who fight against this 'sport'. All over the world, there are too many injured animals every year, so it became important part of their activities.

The mourning of a widow
by Claudia Sonea

Everyone remembers the tragically day of 4 September 2006 when the famous and loved wildlife expert and television personality, Steve Irwin, named the Crocodile Hunter because of his profession and brave attitude in face of danger, died while filming for his latest TV show off Port Douglas in Queensland. His wife and co-hostess of the wildlife documentary, Terri Irwin decided to speak to the press for the first time since his death and she described to Sky News her loss in a very emotional way. Terri talked about her loss using words like devastating, extraordinary, incredibly difficult, and very sad, adding that she lost her soulmate. Everything was incredibly difficult for her and the only thing she could do after his death was to use the video tape with the dramatic moment as a funeral by having it burned. Although she did not watch the footage, kept by police for months, it was like a burden lifted off her chest due to the fact that she considered the last thing remaining of her husband. Steve had a feeling that he would die prematurely after he found out that his mother died in a car accident. He told his wife that he wants to do as much as possible while he is still alive. And he did, unfortunately his last quest ended with the being stabbed in the chest by a stingray. He was only 44 years old. Humanity lost a wonderful man who dedicated his life to teach us as many things as possible about the wildlife and the animals. People are a lot more courageous because of his inspiring deeds. His wife is determined to continue his legacy and we all support her in her grief and also in her future actions. With love forever to Steve Irwin! may his soul rest in peace.

Grinch reopening on Broadway
by Natalia Holvova

The Supreme Court Justice of the state of New York judge Helen Friedman allowed reopening and performing of the Broadway show Grinch until January 6th. The walkout of the Local 1, the stagehands union shut down more than two dozens plays and musicals on Broadway as a form of strike because the theater workers have been working without the contract since the end of July.   The play Grinch is about furry chartreuse troll that steals the Christmas. A bitter cave-dwelling creature lives on snowy Mount Crumpit, north of Whowille, home of the merry and warmhearted Whos. His only companion is Max, his faithful but dim dog. From his place can Grinch hear the voices of the Christmas festival in Whowille and get envy of the happiness. After that he makes a plan to descend on the town and by means of burglary get them off the Christmas presents and decorations and consequently avoid the Christmas in the town. Eventually he can see that the Christmas comes no matter what and people are able to celebrate even without the present because there is something special about the atmosphere and charm of the Christmas. In the end he understand what does it mean to celebrate the holiday of love and he become better, returns the presents to the Whos and join the community of the town.   This classic story about special meaning of the Christmas can maybe sound like cliché but for me it seems even more important than few years ago. In the past the message of the Christmas was clear, nowadays is the situation different. Christmas become a shopping holiday when everyone is running around and tries to get bigger and more valuable present for their relative or friend. Even though Santa Claus is probably not coming through the smokestack into our houses while we sleep, presents are not the point.   We celebrate Christmas only once a year. There is a lot of evil in the world. People are getting crazy, they are killing each other, they don't help each other, they suffer from starving, they are selfish and don't care of anyone else beside themselves. If we don't have time to think of each other during the year, could we pay attention and do it during the Christmas, holiday of love?

Broadway on strike
by Claudia Sonea

Local 1, the stagehands union, has decided to go on strike affecting thousands of actors, musicians, ushers, ticket takers and concession sellers who work in dozens of shuttered theaters. Although the strike is in its second week no negotiations were planned between the union and the League of American Theatres and Producers, therefore no one knows how long it will last. The main reason that fails the two to get to an agreement despite the fact that they spent more than 13 hours Saturday, 18 November, and for 11 hours the next day is the number of stagehands (scenery and prop handlers, carpenters, electricians and lighting and sound technicians) needed to open a Broadway show and keep it running. The union's demands were mostly related to a fair contract, the number of employees and their retributions and respect of the employer. More than 27 shows were canceled and the truth is that the stagehands are the ones suffering the most. Steve Armour, who plays the trombone in the orchestra of The Drowsy Chaperone, confesses that even though they are receiving strike benefits that are a fraction of their regular pay, it is still hard and he has to cut expenses because from earning $700 or $800 a week, he's now paid with $30 a show. Steve Kenyon, who plays woodwinds, also complaints that due to the strike what should have been the busiest and therefore the best paid week ever is now transformed in a nightmare of worries about health plan running dry and finding other jobs. Ushers, wardrobe assistants, box-office clerks and press agents are also affected by the strike. According to the statement of Gordon Forbes, secretary-treasurer of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers, 150 of his members are affected, including house managers, press agents, company managers and marketing specialists who are paid half of what they would have got if there wouldn't have been any strike. Jerry Mitchell, director-choreographer of Legally Blonde and choreographer of Hairspray, said it is hard because he's not being paid for the shows during the strike and his income was reduced in half. The feeling that this strike is not a good solution haunts most of the people that are picketing or not with the union. Stay connected and surf to see what solution they find!

Neil Diamond is back
by Romana Schlesingerova

One of the most successful pop music performer of all times, singer with over 48 million records sold and a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame is coming back from the grave. After his recent fiasco with the Sony BMG that pulled his disc from retail, his return is even more spectacular. He finally revealed the name of his secret inspiration for the hit "Sweet Caroline" last week. It was no else than Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of the U.S. President John F. Kennedy, who caught his eye in one news magazine in the time when he was just a young greener "It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony," Diamond recalled. Born in New York, growing up in Brooklyn, Diamond has been constantly in the contact with the music world as much as he dropped his medicine scholarship and found his way to the career that suited him the best. From the unknown songwriter he managed to fame his name in 1960s and jumped up on every music chart in the country as well as outside of the U.S. Diamond's last record named "12 Songs" released in December 2005 brought the singer back to his old fellow producer Rick Rubin. "Stripped of kitsch, he sighs and gently roars to the sound of his own acoustic guitar. Diamond's talent for making songs that can break your heart or make you punch the air in glee has been lost through unfashionable familiarity." (The Guardian, February 2006) As Neil Diamond once said himself: "My voice is unadorned. I don't try for perfection. I try to be honest and truthful and soulful with the voice I have. If I make mistakes in notes, or there are cracks in notes, I don't fix them. That's the way it is."

The Character of Charmin Ads Dies
by Barbora Kasparova

Some actors consider the commercial business their last option, for some it is a sign of lack of money, some make most of their career in it. That is the case of "Mr. Whipple", one of the most famous characters in American advertising, who died this week at the age of 91. Everybody knew the face, everybody knew the slogans, and no matter if considered silly or not, we all must admit they were catchy. 500 commercials for toilet paper is quite a load, and although Dick Wilson had appeared in many movies and TV Shows, he'll be remembered in people's minds as the author of: "Ladies, please don't squeeze the Charmin!" Mr. Dick Wilson had his own way of coping with the rather embarrassing topics of the TV ads: "What are you going to say about toilet paper? I think we handle it the best way we can." (http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/california/la-me-wilson20nov20,1,1733059.story?coll=la-headlines-pe-california). Commercial business, after all, is a part of the popular culture, and as his daughter stated after his death: "He is a part of the culture. He was funny till the very end".

The new Apprentice
by Claudia Sonea

After rumors spreading and no confirmation from anyone (because they all sworn secrecy) NBC finally made public the names of the cast members for the new season of Apprentice called Celebrity Apprentice. Some of the celebrities did not need any introduction like Omarosa (the first "Apprentice" season in 2004), Vincent Pastore (aka "Big Pussy" from "The Sopranos"), Stephen Baldwin and Gene Simmons of Kiss, but other do need a little bit of introduction: Nely Galan (former entertainment president of the Telemundo network and executive producer and "life coach" of "The Swan") and Marilu Henner, best-known from the sitcom "Taxi". There will be a total of 14 celebrities competing not for a job with Donald Trump, as in the previous six "Apprentice", but in business-oriented tasks around New York City to raise money for their favorite charities. Donald Trump, the executive producer-host, is still in the boardroom and the advisers will be once more Ivanka and Donald Trump Junior. The celebrities competing were chosen from a field of some 125 celebrity applicants and they met for the first time face to face in mid-October at a press conference, after which they had their first challenge. On January 3 the show will have its debut. The main reason for which these 14 celebrities were the lucky ones was that they all have experienced the business area, according to Trump. Other celebrities competing are Trace Adkins, Olympic gymnastics gold medalist Nadia Comaneci, Playboy Playmate of the Year Tiffany Fallon, Olympic softball gold medalist Jennie Finch, heavyweight boxing champ Lennox Lewis, "America's Got Talent" judge Piers Morgan and Ultimate Fighting Champion Tito Ortiz. Don't go away and keep the remote control next to you…this sounds promising!

Berlin in New York
by Barbora Kasparova

The New Yorkers had an outstanding opportunity to get the taste of the German capital for 17 days between November 2nd and 18th. The Carnegie Hall launched the first year of its new project "Berlin in Lights Festival". One of the main attractions of the festival were the performances of Berlin Philharmonic, considered to be the top among the world's orchestras, under British conductor Simon Rattle. The stunning performance of the whole festival was a featuring of more than 94 New York kids dancing their "The Rite of the Spring Project" ballet while the Berlin Philharmonic played Stravinsky's "Le Sacre du Printemps". The festival not only hosted musical events. New Yorkers were able to see many faces of the Berlin culture, as the Carnegie Hall playbill informed, "architecture, cinema, photography, literature, visual arts, politics, and cabaret will also be among the many facets"(http://www.playbillarts.com/features/article/7194.html). Events included performance by German cabaret singer Max Raabe, concert by group NomadSystem, exhibitions and movie projection

Leona Lewis" Spirit
by Claudia Sonea

In 2006 the third series of The X Factor was won by Leona Lewis who obtained a 1 million pounds recording contract. She is an English singer-songwriter born in the London district of Islington to parents Aural Josiah, an Afro-Caribbean youth worker, and Marie Lewis, a social worker of Anglo-Welsh descent. The first song she wrote was at the age of 12 and at thirteen she won the Lady D under-eighteen talent show at the Hackney Empire. However, her struggle as singer seemed to go nowhere, but thanks to her boyfriend who convinced her to enter The X Factor she is now widely recognized. On Sunday her debut album Spirit went into chart at number one and reached a record for the fastest-selling debut album in Britain. Only in the first week since its release, more than 375,872 copies were sold; therefore the record of 363,735 copies in the first week in January 2006 established by British rock group Arctic Monkeys was broke. Lewis spokesman said that the number of album's copies sold surpassed the rest of the top 10 put together. Also he added that the figures show an average of an amazing 200 albums per minute. It is not surprising in the context that her first single, a cover of Kelly Clarkson's hit "A Moment Like This" was sold in 571,253 copies, beating Take That's single "Patience" and was crowned the 2006 UK Christmas number-one single, outselling the rest of the Top 40's sales combined. The single "Bleeding Love" the competition winner's song is atop the singles chart for the fourth week. Nevertheless, Lewis' album had to face strong competition from the Spice Girls' "Greatest Hits" album, debuting on number 2 in the album chart. In the single chart Take That remained in second place with "Rule The World" and on number 3 it's Timbaland with "Apologize". Kyle Minogue occupies the fourth place with "2 Hearts". Leona is a promising singer, compared by Simon Cowell with divas such as Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera and Celine Dion. So, don't waste anymore time and either download it or just buy the album. Enjoy.

by Ludmila Martinicka

27 of Broadway theaters put the curtain down for a nine-day-long strike. Dispute between League of the American Theaters and Producers, Inc. and the union representing the theater started on 10th November without notice. Since this Sunday, theaters are opened again for all the visitors. Two days of talks between strikers and defenders brought peace for now. Not to loose visitors Broadway put a Strike-free zone on the web page for the time of the strike. Fans of "Marry Poppins", "Young Frankenstien", glamorous "Xanadu", one of bestsellers "Radio City Christmas Spectacular", long-running musical "Altar Boyz", "Blue Man Group"suited for whole family, "Spelling Bee" by William Finn, drama "Mauritius" by Theresa Rebeck, "Pygmalion", comedian show "The Ritz", Shakespeare's epic tale of power and magic "Cymbeline" and of many others could get their artistic adventure despite of the strike. Some ticket-holders from across the United States and around the world were not so lucky and found doors of the theaters closed. The price of a ticket moves around 500 dollars and more. 1.3 million tickets were sold to foreign tourists. So, it is not hard to imagine their reactions. However, they could enjoy the shows of Off-Broadway productions. For those, who don't know anything abut the theater, shows, plays and musicals, but anyway want to see one, Broadway's web page offers list of Best Sellers. There belong "Lion King" as the number 1, "Wicked" on the 2nd place, musical based on the ABBA's songs "MAMMA MIA!" as third, famous "The Phantom of the Opera", "Marry Poppins" and others.

Beatles online

On Thursday Paul McCartney announced that the expectation of the fans of the former band Beatles is about the end and the Fab four's music will be available online next year according to a U.S. music Web site report. They are among the first group and the highest-profile holdouts to putting their catalogue online and that is happening due to a trial for trademark that involved both the former members of Beatles and Apple. Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the families of George Harrison and John Lennon control the Apple Corps label and they wanted exclusivity so they sued Apple Inc on the charge of broking a deal aimed at ensuring there would not be two Apples in the music industry. Although the members lost the initial court battle against Apple Computer- more exactly against its iPod and iTunes download service- in the end they stroke a deal suitable for everyone. Apple Inc. will own all of the trademarks related to "Apple" and will license certain of those trademarks back to Apple Corps for their continued use. Furthermore, McCarthy stated for the Bilboard.com that before going online they wanted to be sure that everything is in perfect order and clear and the Beatles' catalogue will be released by Apple as a consequence of the trademark settlement in February. Despite the fact that the solo catalogues of all four Beatles have been available digitally since October, the music of the group is definitely going to be a hit. Stay connected and soon you'll surf their web.

SOMETHING HAPPENS ON BROADWAY
by Jana Kokavcova

What is happening in last few days on Broadway? They called it 2 black days. It is something like a protest against upper class - producers and managers. They stopped all shows and on the streets that are normally full of people and where are long crowds were only a few pedestrians. Theaters around Time Square were empty. Some people have tickets for some performances, but they waited for nothing. On Sunday there were no performances at all. Twenty seven shows remained to close on Sunday. Such beautiful and famous performances like "Wicked", "The Phantom of the Opera", "Hairspray", "Jersey boys"… All these were closed. They protested. James J. Claffey Jr., president of Local One, said : "The League of American Theatres and Producers needs to make a "constructive" adjustment to its counter offers." That is the problem of all the theatres in New York. And maybe not only in "Big Apple". But there were some theaters that were not closed on Sunday. Eight theaters have separate contracts with the union and stay open on Saturday and Sunday. There were playing performances like "Young Frankenstein", "Mary Poppins" … as well as four shows that were playing at nonprofit theaters. They were "Pygmalion", The Ritz", "Mauritius" and "Cymbeline". What is the reason why league protests? Maybe money. They want pay for workers and work that is actually performed. They want respect and constructive adjustment between Theatres and Producers. The producers want more flexibility in hiring. The head of Actors' Equity Association John Connolly said: "We regret these theatres are closed. We are sorry we are not where we want to be: on stage, entertaining our audiences. That is what we do, that's what we live for…" All we could say in conclusion is that this situation will not stay such horrible long time, because people love theatre and actors love audience.

HOW HIGH WILL FLY THE BEE
by Jana Kokavcova

Thanksgiving in U.S.A. comes with great surprise for everyone. Families love cinema and especially fairy-tales by The DreamWorks- Paramount flick. How can I say that so simple? Because of ratings that has the new film from Jerry Seinfeld & "Bee Movie". I have not seen it yet, but I think it will be something similar as "A Bug's Life" from Walt Disney from the year 1998. This new film is in now No.1 in American films. "Bee Movie" "bugs" so famous film as "American Gangster" in that stars actors like Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. Families must really enjoy this film, because "Bee Movie" earned till now 26 millions of U.S. dollars. Maybe it is really fascinating story with strong word of mouth. No. 2 is now well known "American gangster" and some other films in top ten are family comedy "Fred Claus," with Vince Vaughn as the black-sheep brother of Santa, drama interlocking three stories in the war on terror "Lions for Lambs" where stare Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise and Robert Redford, a thriller about a woman trapped in a parking garage and terrorized by the attendant on Christmas Eve "P2", and some other. But none from these was as great as little animated "Bee Movie". For one, who loves animated films, is this fairy tale very nice reason for going to the cinema. For another one, who feels too old for fairy tales, there are equally good films from American top ten. If you would like to see all the films in chart, you should go to : http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071111/ap_en_mo/box_office;_ylt=Aq778GknHRA4VcGfDOgNG9us0NUE

Famous Names in the New Star Trek Movie
by Natalia Holvova

Canadian actor Bruce Greenwood (I, Robot, Exotica) is to appear in the next of the Star Trek film series movies (the 11th one, would you believe?) simply called Star Trek. His role of the captain Christopher Pike was before played by Jeffrey Hunter in The Cage pilot episode, and by Sean Kenney in The Menagerie episode. Another big shot to star in the upcoming episode will be Winona Rider playing Amanda Grayson, Spock's mother. Star Trek has its firm fan base in the U.S. as well as around the world, although the latest one of the Paramount Pictures series & Star Trek: Nemesis, released in 2002, earned, according to the Box Office, $43 million, which did not cover the 70 million budget, and the creators were "saved" by the world fans, who spent 100 $ million to see the movie. The Paramount Pictures is going to release the movie on December 25, 2008. Some critics anticipate another failure. Will the star cast and a budget of a record sum ($ 100 million) ensure the success? Or is the Star Trek a cult of the older generation that is predestined to fade away? Are we to answer the question: "Why do all good things come to an end?"

Hollywood on strike
by Claudia Sonea

Bad news for comedy and drama series, Hollywood is now on strike and your remote is in serious trouble. It will not be consequences in the immediate future, but on the long run if the Writers Guild of America doesn't reach an agreement on a new contract by Tuesday night's deadline, many writers will quit their jobs and the viewing masses will have no more TV shows. The City is in danger to face another problem on top of everything, midsummer actors' strike. Until now the writers have claimed that their old contracts' do not protect writers' income enough, or their place in the great Hollywood hierarchy. Therefore they want money made from foreign sales, DVDs and video and also from the Internet, more respect which means they want their names to be added to the movie post right besides the director's name, so they can get credits too for their work and end the monopolization of directors. For the viewers things are not that sunny. If the writers don't settle a satisfying new contract until midnight Tuesday, there will be a serious blow for those that are addicted to the remote control. Of course the movie industry will not see the effects immediately due to the fact that the movies that are already written can be finished without writers. Furthermore, when it comes to the small screen, the season is on can, so there is nothing to be concerned about yet. However, if it will go on and they will drag the matter, next fall you will see only TV shows like "Survivor" clones, news shows, and "Millionaire" without drama or comedy. All this happening just at the beginning of a new TV season, is still not a problem because most of the favorite series are already on tap: House with six episodes left (last episodes airing in January); Samantha Who? has eight more episodes; The "Crime Scene Investigation" trio, "NCIS," "Criminal Minds," "Without a Trace" and "Cold Case" each have three to six more episodes running on CBS. Series like CBS' comedies ("How I Met Your Mother," "The Big Bang Theory," "Two And a Half Men," "Rules of Engagement"), ABC's Ugly Betty, Pushing Daisies and Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, NBC's Heroes have episodes that will last mostly until the end of this month and the beginning of December; while Fox's "24" is postponed indefinitely. Let's pray that they iron out differences and get to an agreement if not for their sake, at least, for ours the ones that are waiting breathless to the new episode of our favorite series. Good luck at the negotiations.

Problems of Time Warner
by Jana Kokavcova

Time Warner - the world's largest media company shares had fallen after the unit reported second-quarter ad revenue growth of 16 percent in the prior four periods. The company net income fell to $1.09 billion from $2.32 billion a year earlier. Cable division revenue rose 25 percent to $4 billion. This company tried to buy new customers with giving them net, when they take combination of digital phone, video and broadband services. But it goes worse than analyst forecast. There is also great competition against phone companies offering similar services. Why is it so? There are some reasons for this situation. Time Warner had a gain of $727 million tied to the sale of a stake in Time Warner Telecom and Warner Bros.' Australian theme parks year earlier. Revenue at Time Warner's movie division rose. Leader of this revenue are sales of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" and DVD sales of "300". So operating income more than doubled to $268 million. The latest net income results included investment gains and tax benefits. Last year Time Warner booked large gains from cable operator Adelphia Communications, the sale of its interest in Time Warner Telecom Inc. and Warner Bros. ‘ Australian theme parks, and other tax benefits. We have news that shares of Time Warner which were down since the beginning of this year rallied 3 percent on Tuesday in anticipation of rosier earnings. The company said that it still planned to earn $1.07 a share this year.

Problémy spoločnosti Time Warner
by Jana Kokavcova

Zisky najväčšej mediálnej spoločnosti Time Warner klesli po tom, čo v predchádzajúcej dobe zisky z reklamy stúpli o 16 percent. Time Warner získala v minulom roku $727 miliónov predajom podielov v Time Warner Telecom a Warner Bros.' Australian theme parks. Zisk má spoločnosÅ¥ Time Warner hlavne z oddelenia filmového priemyslu.

Hollywood writers paralyze an industry
by Corina Ciubotaru

A writers' strike is paralyzing Hollywood these days. Famous shows like "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno", "The Late Show" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" have been halted and now air reruns because the writers picketing TV headquarters refuse to write any more material. The reason behind their discontent is that they feel their share of online show reuse income should be bigger than it is now, which led to disagreements with producers in the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers; they eventually gave up their demand that the share they get off a sold DVD should be increased, thus removing a stumbling block from the producers' path. The Writers Guild of America members have begun their strike on Monday and by the looks of things, it will last for a very long time. The bad news is that the Screen Actors Guild and the Directors Guild of America may also go on strike due to disagreements in the same area and TV show host Ellen DeGeneres has not showed up for work on Monday, in support of her writers. The writers' plan is to picket 14 studio locations from 9 to 5 every day until they get what they think is rightfully theirs. And the protest would gain even more power if the truck drivers, casting directors and location manager's union would also join, but so far they have kept away from this mess. So far, negotiations have not begun between the WGA and the AMPTP but eventually, this conflict will have to be solved, as the entertainment industry is too profitable to halt for a long time.

Dark age is coming for TV-addicts
by Martina Fischerova

Bad news appeared last days for TV addicts either Hollywood producers. Members of the Writer Guilt of America voted unanimity for calling the strike last week. The cause is simple &money. The talks between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have continued since july without any noticeable progress. The source of the problem is that the writers demanding more money from the sale of DVDs and a share of revenue generated by the sale of TV shows and films over the Internet. Writers say the strike will last untill studios offer a more lucrative deal. The producers said it couldn't be reached. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers announced that writers unreasonable proposals would result in astronomical increases in producers costs." But WGA is not all alone in their opinion - The Screen Actors Guild faces the same royalty issues as writers, and its president, Alan Rosenberg, expressed support for them last week. The worst what could happen is the immediate affect on TV program followed by loosing viewers and cause financial troubles to producers. First talkshows which are dependent on current events will dissapear from our TV screens since one or two weeks. Daytime soap operas would run out of episodes within a month, primetime sitcoms and dramas would last for 6 to 12 weeks. So far famous series as Lost, Desperate houswives and others would stop in next january or february because development of new series for next season would be cut short. The major networks would be forced to fill their schedules with repeats, newsmagazines and reality-TV series, all of which are unaffected by the strike. We can just hope that these two sides will find common speech soon and the viewers won' t get bored to death without their belowed shows and series watching repeats all the time.

An “Elvis is Alive” Devotee in Search for a Disciple
by Barbora Kasparova

It is in people's nature to question, speculate and eventually come up with theories. Mr. Bill Beeny, an 81 year-old resident of Warren County, Missouri, also has a theory of his own. He, in fact, dedicated his free time and energy to it for the past 15 years. He claims, what we have heard many times before, that Elvis Presley is still alive and has "reliable" evidence to support his believes. Not the first one to do that, you object... Certainly not. However, definitely one of the few that went as far as to open his own museum named The Elvis is Alive Museum (should you be seriously interested - http://www.theelvisisalivemuseum.com). Some call it hobby, others call it obsession. No matter what we tag it, the fact is, that Mr. Beeny is about to retire from his function of keeping Elvis alive, and he does not intend to let his message be forgotten. He's put all his material concerning Elvis's life and death for sale on eBay. So if you are in urgent need of a conspiracy theory to nourish, and have an extra of $ 4, 467. 69 to spend (the starting price was $450, and as for Nov 02nd 33 bids were placed so far), this is perfect time for you.

J. K. Rowling finished book of fairy tales
by Nina Gotzmannova

The author and pen mother of wizard Harry Potter said her last goodbye to the world full of magic and mystery. Her new book of fairy tales is her first book after finishing the Harry Potter series and although it is not about Harry's world, the book has something in common with him. "The Tales of Beedle the Bard", as is the title, was previously mentioned in the last Harry Potter book. In the book "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" the headmaster of Hogwarts Albus Dumbledore gave one of the characters, Hermione Granger, book with the same name as the new Rowling book has. But for the readers and the fans would be difficult to get to this book as it exist only in Harry Potter's world. The book is unfortunately hand written and made only in seven copies. Six of them are gifts to Rowling friends and only one will go for sale. It will be sold via auction at Sotheby's on December 13 and the starting price is $ 62,000. Not only this book is the only copy for the public, but it's also a luxury piece for the library. The book is bound in morocco leather, mounted with silver and semiprecious stones. The price may be therefore even higher. Except this highly unreachable book for average Joe or Jane is J. K. Rowling working on another book. According to her words it is a book for children and it's half written. Her next plans for the future are to publish an encyclopedia of the wizarding world.
