Sony's Superbad helped the movie industry break another record
by Corina Ciubotaru

For the second weekend in a row, Sony's movie Superbad is topping the sales chart in America. The industry has topped the $4 billion mark for the summer and it was the best year ever when it comes to total sales, though ticket numbers haven't been very high. By the end of the season, sales are expected to reach $4.15 million, with 606 million tickets sold. Superbad is a movie about three dorky high-school kids trying to score drinks for a party, all in the name of impressing a few pretty girls. The teen movie has no big stars in the cast, but it managed to do very good, despite all expectations, cashing in $18 million last weekend alone. On second place, The Bourne Ultimatum is the third part of Jason Bourne's story and describes his attempt to get back at the people who made him into the perfect killer that he is. Rush Hour 3, the movie ranking at number 3 on the highest sales list, is also a sequel starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker as the cop duo trying to solve crimes involving Asian organized crime. Mr. Bean's Holiday, starring British actor Rowan Atkinson as the unmistakable goofy character, debuted last weekend at number four after a huge success overseas. Action thriller War completes the Top Five list for this weekend, with total sales of $10 million. The summer season will end on Labor Day September 3rd, after which vacations end and kids start going to school instead of movie theaters.

Superbad still tops the box office chart
by Corina Ciubotaru

Summer figures look really good for Hollywood. 606 million movie tickets will have been sold by the end of the season, topping the $4 billion mark in sales. "Superbad", a movie about three geeky teenagers with no major stars in the cast, has done very well, scoring $18 million this weekend out of a $68.6 million total and staying at the top of the ticket sales list for two straight weekends. This is the second best-selling movie from Sony, after "Spiderman 3" brought over $336.5 million so far. The top five movies this weekend are "Superbad", "The Bourne Ultimatum" from Universal which made $12.4 million, followed by "Rush Hour 3" with $123 million. "Mr. Bean's Holiday", also by Universal, debuted on fourth place, raising $10.1 million in its first U.S. weekend, after having scored $188.9 million overseas. Lions Gate's "War" came in fifth in the countdown. The top 12 movies cashed in $90.2 million last weekend and these numbers show an increase in profits even though fewer, yet more expensive tickets were sold compared to the same periods in other years. The highest attendance was in 2002, when box offices sold 653.4 million tickets. The movies this summer were a combination of sequels, comedies and drama which kept people coming to the cinema, as both attendance and sales rose from the same time last year. Figures are expected to fall though, in the coming months, as the summer season is coming to an end on Labor Day (September 3rd) and school starts.

Rowling writing detective novel
by Delia Cruceru

J.K. Rowling, the famous writer, decided to let Harry Potter and his pals away, now concentrating on writing detective novels. She was spotted in cafes from Edinburg, working on the manuscript. Ian Rankin, the creator of Detective Inspector John Rebus, at the Edinburgh book festival told to the press that his wife saw Rowling "scribbling away in a cafe recently". "My wife spotted her writing her Edinburgh criminal detective novel. It is great that she has not abandoned writing or Edinburgh cafes," Rankin said. In interviews, J.K Rowling said she has plans for new books, but she believes she is unlikely to repeat the success of the Potter series. "I'll do exactly what I did with Harry â€" I'll write what I really want to write," Rowling said. On her website, she gave hints to fans saying she wants to write something "completely different". "I can take my time. And the idea of just wandering off to a cafe with a notebook and writing and seeing where that takes me for a while is just bliss," the writer added. The famous writer is UK's richest woman with a fortune of 1 billion dollars as she sold 335 million copies worldwide of the seven books with the boy wizard Harry Potter.

John Lennon's solo music is available for download on iTunes
by Corina Ciubotaru

iTunes, Apple Inc.'s leading music store, is about to gain yet another victory in the quest to bring music to the iPod people. It has recently signed a deal with the guardians of John Lennon's work and is about to make his solo work available for download; it has been on sale on other sites for quite some time but without much success. Apple is getting closer to publishing The Beatles' catalog, after having signed a similar deal with Paul McCartney in May. Ringo Starr's solo music will begin selling later this month, but George Harrison's work is yet to be made available in online stores. As a bonus, 4 albums and the collections "Anthology" and "Working class hero" will include videos for a limited duration of 30 days. The John Lennon songs will also be ready for download in iTunes plus mode, featuring higher quality and no DRM, as part of EMI's catalog. The songs became available for download after a settlement in the trial between Apple Inc. and Apple Corps, The Beatles' company. There has been a long history of lawsuits between the two because of the name; Apple Corps gave Apple Inc the right to use its name in 1991 as long as they kept away from the music business but when iTunes and iPod appeared onto the scene, the battle was on again. Their latest agreement in February says that Apple Inc has all the rights to the name, but must license some use of it to Apple Corps. The agreement was amicable and this is hardly a surprise, as Steve Jobs is one of the most famous Beatles fans.

Not so sure about the aftershow
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

Prince fans are disappointed that their favorite artist sometimes never shows up at the Indigo venue following his concerts at London's O2 arena. Prince's website announces that when there are arena concerts on consecutive days, the band usually chooses to rest instead of appearing at Indigo. A spokeswoman for the Purple One tried to explain everyone it was never guaranteed that Prince's band would play every night at Indigo. She said the website clearly stated Prince's band would play most nights, and on any given night they could show up. Many fans booked tickets especially because these after shows were heavily advertised. Ticketmaster promoted the after shows as "the white hot place to hang for those still in need of some serious grooves". Tickets were priced at £75 and £25, whereas the main arena show was £31.21 per seat. If you'd be a dedicated Prince fan you'd immediately figure out why the price was set at £31.21. If you're not a big Prince fan you need an explanation: it is a reference to Prince's recent album 3121. Ticketmaster made sure they can't be accused of misinforming and they stated: "Please be aware that Prince and the band are not guaranteed to perform, but as we all know with these cats - expect the unexpected." However fans think this wasn't clear enough and that warning messages were not prominently displayed when they booked tickets. Some of them contacted Ticketmaster to get refunds but we all know this isn't going to happen.

Merv Griffin passed away at age 82
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

Merv Griffin passed away at 82 years old after losing a hard fight to prostate cancer, according to a statement from his family released by Marcia Newberger, spokeswoman for The Griffin Group/Merv Griffin Entertainment. Merv Griffin began his career as a $100-a-week radio singer in San Francisco. He created the "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" game shows we all loved and watched and some of us even played. He was the featured vocalist in Freddy Martin's band. He had a brief film career and a successful TV career as host of "The Merv Griffin Show," which aired for more than 20 years. His financial success came from investing and producing "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune." His creations became quickly the hottest games on TV. Merv Griffin sold the rights for them to the Columbia Pictures Television Unit for $250 million, keeping a share of the profits. He was too much of an artist and creative person so after playing around with the sale money and spreading it in treasury bonds, stocks and other investments he got bored. His TV show inspired hundreds of others and hosted great personalities. Whitney Houston made her début at the Merv Griffin Show; Olivia Newton John launched her first record; everyone who was someone appeared in Merv Griffin's TV show. We will all miss this wonderful person who made TV history and introduced us to another gender of entertainment. Merv Griffin will definitely not be forgotten. May he rest in peace!

"Rush Hour 3" hits No.1 in box office
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

Cop comedy "Rush Hour 3" made the top movie at the weekend box office, with people rushing in theatres all over. Last week's top film, "The Bourne Ultimatum" and its $33.7 million income, we're pushed in second place by New Line Cinema's new hit, and its $50.2 million. "We really never felt we were going to get where the second one was," said David Tuckerman, head of distribution for New Line. "The competitive landscape has changed dramatically in the six years since the last film. We figured we'd be in the 50's and that's where we are." Although the movie did not do as well as its predecessor, "Rush Hour 2", which took in $67.4 million, it was the sixth threequel of the summer to open as s weekend top film, and it ranks as August fourth best opening on record. Hollywood might be looking at the first ever $4 billion summer, with "The Bourne Ultimatum" crossing the $100 million mark in its second week in theaters. And with "The Simpsons Movie" coming in third with $11.1 million, for a three-week total of $152 million. Paul Dergarebedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers, stated: "We already stand at $3.6 billion at the box office. The $4 billion summer, once thought an impossibility, is definitely within reach". He also added: "We've been riding a wave of momentum that started with 'Transformers' in July". The other film opening this weekend, Paramount's "Stardust," a well-reviewed adult fairy tale starring Michelle Pfeiffer, didn't fare as well. It took in $9 million, good enough for fourth place behind "The Simpsons Movie," but not as much as might be expected for a film with a cast that included Robert DeNiro, Peter O'Toole and Claire Danes. The movie is expected to do better on international markets, and will be rolled out in Europe in October, hoping to cover the $70 million investment.

Disney renaming
by Claudia Sonea

In 1989 in Florida, USA, Walt Disney World Resort opened its third theme park called Disney- MGM Studios, inspired from the heyday of Hollywood in the 1930s and '40s. The resort had two contracts with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer; one to use MGM name and lion logo in marketing and another one to use specific MGM content in The Great Movie Ride. Because of the construction of MGM Grand Hotel and Theme Park in Las Vegas, in 1992 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer filed a law suit against Disney that filed a countersuit at its turn. The reason was the right over the MGM name. Disney won the battle, but it was contractually prohibited to use the name Disney- MGM Studios in certain marketing contexts where it will be called The Disney Studios. It took them long time, but it is not surprising that they finally decided that from January 2008 the originally name of the park will be changed in Disney's Hollywood Studios. Furthermore the contract with MGM will expire at the end of 2007, so it was a must to rename it. Meg Crofton, president of the Walt Disney World Resort, said that the new name represents the change of the park too; it will no longer represent the golden age of movies, but greatness of Hollywood regarding the entertainment. No matter the reasons and the name, the park is a great place where imaginary can run loose and looks like a real motion picture studio, a mass of streets and buildings that blend into each other. Wouldn't we all want to take a tour?

Rocket Science
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

One reason the director of "Rocket Science", Jeffrey Blitz has jumped from documentaries to feature films to television and back again is that he does not want his work stuffed into a neat little Hollywood box. Blitz was nominated for an Oscar for his first film, the documentary "Spellbound". His new film, "Rocket Science", which is due to debute on Friday, doesn`t build on his non-fictional succes, but instead turns to a fictional comedy approach. The movie is about a teenage stutter on a high school debate team and left January's Sundance Film Festival with huge fan buzz, good reviews and a best director award for Blitz. Although the movie succes put the director on Hollywood`s map,he didn`t direct movies, only episodes of TV comedy "The Office", currently working on a documentary about lottery winners and writing a fictional screenplay.Blitz said in a recent interview that "Among earlier generations, people would think the egomaniac would be the film director; the quiet noble type would be making the non-fiction thing; and the sad sack guy who couldn't be the film director is making TV.For my generation, none of that stuff applies anymore. There are such great opportunities to tell different kinds of stories in different ways that people who hang on to the old ideas about it are really missing out," he added.Blitz loves to "pingpong back and forth," between media, and said it was nice to mix long, intense projects like movies with shorter ones. Blitz said that "Films are like long-term relationships ... you engage in a really deep emotional way.Commercials and TV are like great one-night stands. There is no expectation that they will go on beyond the brief amount of time you are there." "Films are like long-term relationships ... you engage in a really deep emotional way," he said."Rocket Science" tells the unlikely story of stutterer Hal Hefner, who is coerced into joining his high school debate team by an ambitious girl with whom he becomes infatuated. The idea of the film is Blitz`s adolescence, but he said he was not interested in making an autobiographical film. "Hal is a very shy kid and he recedes into the background and seems like he'd be more comfortable if everyone left him alone. I was never that kid," Blitz said.

J.K. Rowling worried about illegal translations of her books
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" was published in English in July selling millions of copies in a matter of hours and became the fastest-selling book on record. Translations immediately started to appear on the Internet because it can take months for authorized translations to be published. In France a 16 year old teenager was arrested after posting on the Internet he's own translated version of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". The official French translation is due out on October 26, according to Gallimard. The school boy lives in southern France, in the Aix-en-Provence area and was taken into custody by a police anti-counterfeiting unit and released later. Rowling and Gallimard Jeunesse filed an official complaint but then on Thursday Marie Leroy-Lena, spokeswoman for Gallimard stated that they were worried about organized groups of translators, not individuals: "This complaint in no way concerns isolated translations published on the Internet ... by disinterested fans not fully aware of the illegal nature of their action." More than 335 million copies of the seven Harry Potter novels have been sold worldwide. I wonder if the 16 year old translator will ever read Harry Potter again...But there's always a full side of the glass, just imagine how cool he will be among his friends after this adventure. He'll be the Harry Potter of his group!

Pavarotti hospitalized
by Claudia Sonea

Considered the greatest tenor of his generation, Pavarotti at the age of 71 is having serious health problems. His medical history shows that he had in 2005 a neck surgery to repair two vertebrae, while a bout of laryngitis made him cancel his appearance at the concert Three Tenors held in Mexico. Moreover, when he had his back surgery, he contracted an infection and he also had in 2006 a surgery for pancreatic cancer. Currently he is hospitalized and the reason is yet unknown. Gabriele Sorrentino, the spokesman for the Modena University Policlinic in northern Italy told reporters that the opera star entered the facility on Wednesday and that he is kept under observation, but there is no reason to worry. Despite the fact that the treatment was not made public, according to a local newspaper, Pavarotti was diagnosed with pneumonia during his holiday at the Adriatic seaside. Both hospital and star spokesmen did not confirmed the rumor, but told that he had fever. Pavarotti's manager Terri Robson announced in June that the singer was preparing a new album that will include a collection of classical religious music and it will be released next year if nothing happens. Since his debut in Italy in 1961 he has come a long way and he is the world’s widely recognized opera singer, by some the best of his generation. Let’s hope he will get better and will continue to charm us with his beautiful voice. All the best and God be with him.

Rap sensation Lil' Maaz went from serving kebab to instant fame
by Corina Ciubotaru

A new rap sensation is about to emerge on the scene! And his name is Lil' Maaz. This Turkish sensation currently lives in Paris and works in a restaurant, where he had the idea of composing a song for his customers about...you guessed it...Kebab! It all started as a laugh, as the rapper would immediately start singing once customers made their order. One day he was overheard by some people working at a recording studio, which made a video with him and a couple of friends in the restaurant and posted it on the Internet. YouTube worked its magic and over 400,000 people viewed the rising star over the past month, in a video named after the song, "Mange du kebab". More recently, the EMI record label signed him up and has released the single in stores this week. The song is very funny, as both the singer and the record label intended it to be and illustrates perfectly the kind of influence the Internet is beginning to have on people's everyday lives. Not only is it a source of information, it has also become the place for people to express themselves and become popular with others. Blogs and other instruments of Web 2.0 bring us together and let us know each other in new and exciting ways. For the 27-year old Yilmaz Karaman, success came from the most unexpected place, and it's only up to him to rise to infinite glory or dedicate his life to serving fresh kebab to customers.

Lopez may get $545,000 from ex-hubby Noa
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

Jennifer Lopez wins lawsuit against her ex-husband Ojani Noa, over his plans to publish a book in which he claims she had several affairs, and is due to receive nearly $545,000. Only $200,000 go to the singer as damages, with the rest going for arbitration costs and attorney fees Court papers filed Monday indicate a decision against Noa to have been made in April by a court-ordered arbitrator. Lopez's lawsuit claimed Noa to have been violating previous court settlement preventing him from revealing private information about their relationship. Also, the arbitrator decided Noa was permanently forbidden any "criticizing, denigrating, casting in a negative light or otherwise disparaging or causing disparagement" to Lopez. He was also to hand over to the singer or her attorney all copies of materials related to his book. Noa couldn't be found for any comments, but a hearing is the case was scheduled for Sept.5. Rest in peace Ingmar Bergman.
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

Ingmar Bergman died on July 30 at age 89, at his home on Faro, north of the bigger Baltic Sea island of Gotland. We've lost one of the greatest masters of cinema, director of classics like "The Seventh Seal" or the Oscar winning "Fanny and Alexander". His family didn't want to make too many statements and chose to keep privacy of the date and the place Ingmar Bergman will be buried. This is an understandable thing because Bergman put big price on his privacy and always praised his neighbors for respecting that. His neighbors continue to respect him and when asked about the date of the funeral, Kerstin Kalstrom, a primary-school teacher who has lived on the island for more than 40 years replied: "Even if we knew, we would never say," "The people of Faro would never, ever leak.". We should all respect these people and respect Ingmar Bergman's wish. Why do journalists feel the need to go to funerals and take pictures of the coffin, of the sad relatives and other celebrities present at the moment? Bergman had moved to Faro seeking privacy and silence in order to be able to work, rest and do whatever he wanted to do. Is the funeral much more important than his work? The media could do wonderful things in this sad situation. They could play the classic movies on TV and present it to the young generation. They could write quality columns about the artist's work, not about how many flowers there were at the funeral or what the man was wearing.

Claire Danes - a special star
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

Claire Catherine Danes is a Golden Globe Award-winning and Emmy Award-nominated American film, television, and theater actress. She has dozens of unofficial Web sites and fan sites, she-s on Wikipedia and IMDB.com. The talented actress in now starring in the new film "Stardust". She plays the role of a star - the celestial kind, but in human form in the fantasy drama directed by Matthew Vaughn. The film also features Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. Dane's character falls from the sky and enters a realm where a cast of magical characters that want to capture her power start chasing her. Like her character in "Stardust", Claire Danes isn't a typical Hollywood star. No agent spotted her on the street and used the magic wand to turn her into a glamorous character. She always loved performing in front of live audiences, she studied dance- which led her to acting. She had a break from acting and went to Yale to study psychology. This is a very important thing for an actor. Through psychology you can understand your roles better, you can really live the life, the fears and the joys of your character in a very realistic manner. The actress will make her Broadway debut this fall as Eliza Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion". Let's keep our fingers crossed for a very special star who can remind us of the old days when Hollywood actresses were very, very talented in many ways.

Tintin facing racism challenges in Belgium
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

Legal action has been taken by a Congolese student against comic book "Tintin in the Congo", which he considers to be racist. Mbutu Mondondo Bienvenu, from Brussels wishes the comic book that portrays Africans as stereotypical black characters and whites as they're colonial masters, to be removed from bookstores and seeks symbolic damages of one euro from Moulinsart, the publisher of Tintin. "I want to put an end to sales of this cartoon book in shops, both for children and for adults. It's racist and it is filled with colonial-era propaganda", said Bienvenu. Not only that Moulinsart was only aware of this action through media, they added that they are not in the position to remove the books from the shelves, as they only hold Tintin rights and did not publish the novels themselves. Prosecutors declared a motion being filled at the beginning of August, but it's not probable that the case be examined before September. Britain's Commission for Racial Equality has taken some action ths year by moving the book from children's shelves to adult's shelves, with sales of the book subsequently shot up. "The book dates back to 1931 and has to be seen in the context of the time. We are surprised to see this complaint after so many years. Look at John Wayne films and there are Indians being killed. But I'm not aware of calls to withdraw these movies", a spokesman for Moulinsart declared.

Spice Girls relieved
by Claudia Sonea

The famous band that conquered everyone's heart with "Wannabe" will reform after they split in 2001 (a break-up was never formally announced). Formed in London in 1994 the female band had a rapidly success and sold their first album in excess of 53 million records world wide. The break up came as a surprise and started with the departure of Geri Halliwell that started a solo carrier. Later on Melanie B and Victoria Beckham tried the same path, but the success was not even close to the one they had as a band. On June 28, 2007, they made public their comeback and the world tour, The Return of the Spice Girls, which will be in support of their hits compilation. The group gave fans the opportunity to choose a city where they will guve a special performance. The battle was between the tormented Baghdad and Toronto that in the end won and will be the 15th city. The band stated they are glad that they will go to Toronto, a beautiful city and the question on everyone's lips is what they would have said if the winner had been the other city. Relieved of all worries and sleeping better at night, Posh, Scary, Ginger, Sporty and Baby will start the tour in Vancouver. Residents of New York, London, Hong Kong, Sydney and Buenos Aires will have the chance to go to their show too. If the comeback turns out to be successful or not, will find out. So, stay close, one more click and there's a new story to be read!

Scary Spice pressures Eddie Murphy
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

We've seen the talented actor Eddie Murphy in several movies acting like a man of the family, a devoted and very funny father. A recent scandal is trying to put him in a rather different light. Father of five children from his former marriage to Nicole Mitchell Murphy and recently engaged to film producer Tracey Edmonds, is being accused by Melanie Brown, the ex "Scary Spice" that he isn't accepting his parental responsibilities. What looked like a passionate love story is now ready to turn in to a law suite. Mel B's problem is that Eddie Murphy hasn't declared he plans to visit the baby. Like any mother she wants to be able to tell her daughter- Angel Iris Murphy Brown (born on April 4th), that she was a wanted child, that her father loves her and that the actor cuddles her and takes her out on road trips. This is understandable, what seems to me unacceptable is making this public. This is the culture we're living in; this is how we're taught things are done these days- by creating a big scandal, especially if you're a public person. I doubt Eddie Murphy wouldn't pay the alimony or wouldn't take care of both of them. He wouldn't want bad publicity and first of all we don't know him personally. You can't trust nor what tabloids are writing, nor what former Spice girl states. She's just trying to pull down the old pressure on Eddie and get more money. It's an easy equation which could have been solved very easily without flooding the Internet and the tabloids. Eddie Murphy stated that this matter is private and plans to have no further comment proving Scary Spice you need class to last in this business.

Ex-bandmate sues Marylin Manson
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

Former keyboardist of Marilyn Manson claimed that the shock rocker kept millions of dollars meant to be shared and bought items including a handbag owned by Hitler's girlfriend and a skeleton in a wheelchair. Manson,Stephen Bier, whose stage name was Madonna Wayne Gacy and other band members signed a partnership agreement in 1993 to share profits. Manson and others deceived Bier into thinking the band wasn't making much money, claims the suit filed Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court.Bier says he began to think differently several years ago when Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, went on a spending binge. He claims Manson owes him at least $20 million in shared profits. Manson used band money to buy a $2 million home, collect Nazi paraphernalia and to give his fiancee at the time a handbag once owned by Eva Braun, claims the suit, in the period between 2004 to 2006. He also bought "African masks made of human skin, the full skeleton of a 4-year-old Chinese girl, and the full skeleton of a 17th-century male in a wheelchair," the suit claims. All in all, Manson spent band money on personal drug treatment, a low-budget movie production, a Los Angeles gallery to display his artwork and about $450,000 for an engagement ring and his wedding to burlesque performer Dita Von Teese. It is contented by Bier that Manson and the band's lawyer and business managers refused to pay his medical bills for work-related problems and cut off his salary payments and band credit card access. In an interview Thursday with MTV News, Manson denied the allegations and said he would fight them. He said that "The fact that he's claiming that I've treated him unfairly, financially, is really ridiculous. And I would never spend my money on a Chinese girl skeleton. That would be crossing the line. It's a Chinese boy, for the record."

Web drama
by Claudia Sonea

Many of you remember still the entire fuss made over online TV. Bill Gates even lost his temper in the excitement of the new invention and BBC's iPlayer announced a new era. Well under these circumstances it was obvious that there will be changes in the entertainment area too. It will not come as a shock the fact that the Web drama "LonelyGirl15" had a tremendous success and had created sensation. Even major media outlets started to get interest in the project after the fact that Bree, the main character, was not a real 16-year-old posting video blogs on YouTube, but a real actress called Jessica Lee Rose. The plot is about a girl with particular blood properties, chased by an evil organization, "The Order", in order to transfuse her blood into one of the cult's elders- in fact that is how first season ends. Fortunately for the show lovers, there will be a second season introduced by Bree's email that warns girls with the same blood properties about the organization. Miles Beckett, one of the show's three writer-producers, stated that it was a mutual decision to kill the main character, Jessica Lee Rose is developing a new Web comedy and will sign for a new TV project titled "E-lebrity" and the show needs something new. The last episode will be posted over a 12-hour period exclusively on MySpaceTV and the "LonelyGirl15" Web site. Don't waste anymore time in trying to search for it online, just click. Enjoy!
