Chris Cantell Discusses Entertainment: Dark Knight making record in just 10 days
by Zuzana Zelenakova
Batman Begins from 2005 was a pleasant surprise for all the fans of this winged savior of fictional Gotham City. But the director Christopher Nolan even managed to gain new die-hard fans for his Batman. After the Batman movies were gradually slumping in quality throughout the 90s he came with something fresh and new and has relieved the comics hero of all the useless pathos. And now three years later he presented us a sequel, eagerly anticipated Dark Knight. Batman and millionaire Bruce Wayne at the same time has again the face and the sexy kind of husky voice of Welshman Christian Bale. In Batman begins he fought charismatic Liam Neeson, this time it is Heath Ledger who shows all his artistic magic as The Joker. For Ledger who passed away in January 2008 of accidental overdose of prescription drugs it was probably the role of his life. The rumors that it was the mentally demanding role of maniacal Joker that led to Heath Ledger´s death only contributed to the attention paid to the movie. “He´s just out of control – no empathy, he´s a sociopath, a psychotic, mass murdering clown,” said the young actor about this acting challenge. The cast was joined also by Maggie Gyllenhaal who plays Bruce Wayne´s love affair and Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face. Dark Knight earned about $314,000,000 in only 10 days and thus broke record from 2006 when the last Pirates of the Caribbean managed to make $300 million in 16 days. And Warner Bros. is even more optimistic about forthcoming days. “Now, it's all about word-of-mouth,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. “The first weekend, there was this huge, pent-up demand and eagerness by audiences to see this movie. Now, it's like a freight train — it seems to be unstoppable."
