Following the foot steps of Bono, Bon Geldof or Angelina Jolie, Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, simply called Shakira, a Colombian native, currently world's pop icon serves as the Honorary Chair for Action Week 2008 (April 21 to 28).The world superstar is generally known as a singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer but a philantropist as well. Due to the campaign, she held a telephone call with Great Britain Prime Minister Gordon Brown, discussing the education issues.Brown, has praised her for her assets in this area and called her an 'inspiring element'. In fact Shakira has always taken part very seriously. In 1997 she founded 'Pies Descalzos Foundation', Colombia Charity establishing schools for poor children all around the country. During her career she held number of benefit concerts and became Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, pushing up the education issue.Her last movement was establishing ALAS Foundation (America Latina en Asociación Solidaría), donating more than $40 million to help victims of natural diseases and other extra $5 million for education and health.Yesterday, calling from Washinghton, she praised Prime Minister for releasing over $15 billion for education in the countries of third world. Brown, who has taken the previous ancestor Tony Blair's place last year, is the world number 1. in case of development of education, health, literacy and poverty. He often turns on world famous celebrities to back his campaigns. Shakira is one of them.Just like yesterday, Brown has been calling with George Clooney, discussing violence in Darfur, chatting with Angelina Jolie about education and employed Bono in his Africa Aid campaign."He is a man with wonderful intentions, he is very pro-active, he is working very hard for the issue of education," noted Shakira, while Brown paid back compliments."She is inspiring people all over the world," said Brown during the conference call.
