A Writers Guild of America (WGA) deal ?
by Lenka Filipova
After a 5-day negotiation the agreement on the most crucial issues was managed. It is a result of discussions between DGA and AMPTP that were together able to prepare several changes required by Writers. The following concessions to unions were made (although not enhancing exactly all requirements):â•¢ A new residual formula for downloaded TV shows which doubles their previous current rate, e. i. 0.7% of studio's gross revenues. However, it does not comply with the original request that was 2.5% of the gross revenue.â•¢ Increase in movies residual by 80% (to 0.65%) but after fulfilling the condition of selling more than 50,000 copies. For TV shows it is rise to 0.7% just after 100,000 copies are sold.â•¢ Ad-supported streaming on Web. If the show is streamed for 17days, the company must pay 3% of the residual base pay. In spite of this fact, after a year, it will fall to 2% only.â•¢ New media spoils. A fixed rate fee 1.2% on streamed TV shows and movies with 60-day waiting period. Again, the Writers wanted no waiting period and 2.5% fee.â•¢ Jurisdiction. Internet programming will be directed by DGA. The only exception will be the original shows on which production costs are up to $15,000/min; $300,000/program; or $500,000/series.All in all, probably these previously issues dealt by DGA and AMPTP will return WGA and conglomerates back to the table and bargain by fair means.
