Mommy from ' Family Circus' died
by Silvia Szarkova
If I say Thelma Keane, maybe it would not sound to you familiar, but if I would say Mommy, and then Family Circus, she could be easily recognized as beloved comic character. Thelma has, unfortunately, lost her fight against malignant disease and pass away in her family house in Phoenix on Friday. According to her family, she died as a aftermath of Alzheimer disease- just one month after she celebrated the 82th birthday. Diagnosed five years earlier, she was fighting with it for a long time, but three years ago she went to residential-care facility for seniors near to her home, needing more help even with her every day living and medication. Thelma was inspiration for creating a character of Mommy from Family Circus started drawing in 1960 by her husband Bil Keane. Family Circus describes humorous and funny life of two parents and their four children. It has been part of more than 1, 500 newspapers. Not just as a source of inspiration, Thelma was also a full- time business and financial manager of her husband. They met during World war II in Brisbane, Australia, and married in 1948. They had five children and ten years after wedding they had moved to Phoenix. Bill Keane will continue to produce the comic with the help oh Jeff, their youngest son. Gayle Keane, her daughter of age 58 from California still remembers her last birthday a month ago, imagining her dancing and singing happily. But she had to add, that they all, also with brothers Jeff, Neal, Glen and Christopher and nine grandchildren, had time to say goodbye to their beloved mum and granny. “ I just think she has been in a better place right now, not dealing with that confusion that Alzheimer brought to her life, “ she added.
