Nobel Prize awarded to the oldest person ever
by Nina Gotzmannova
Several days ago, on 11 October, was presented the Nobel Prize for literature. The happy winner is Doris Lessing, an 87-year old writer, who seemed less than impressed. But considering her life there is probably nothing that can distress her.Doris Lessing was born in Perzia, now Iran, in 1919. Soon her British parents move to another continent, to Africa. Lessing was raised on a farm in Southern Rhodesia, former British colony now known as Zimbabwe. When she was 13, she left her school and as 15-year old she began to work as a nursemaid. After her first marriage failed, Lessing moved to London, become a socialistic book club member and met her second husband. Shortly after her second divorce her first book, The Grass is Singing, was published. Anyway, her breakthrough came in 1962, when The Golden Notebook was published. Lessing is mostly imaging three topics in her book, the Communist theme, the psychological theme and the Sufi theme, when she switched to science fiction theme. The British reporters came to Lessing's door, announcing her victory, but she seemed really calm, not impressed and sometimes cynical. She said that the prize is not awarded to dead people and the Academy wanted to be sure she will not die before they can award her. She also said that she is not excited about the money she had won because people will send her begging letters. The only good thing about the prize she sees is that people would be more attracted to her work. This acting is nothing new for Doris Lessing. In the past she declined damehood.
