The best last-minute Halloween costume idea
by Magdalena Rosova

Do you already have a costume for your child for the first round of Super-Crafty Halloween Costume Contest III which is going to be tomorrow morning? If not, here are a good idea of how to make costumes on your own. This costume needs more members of your family to get involved. The first person who successfully replicates this idea and sends photo as a proof to phartlaub@sfchronicle.com will receive price. The costume is inspired by Mad Men, so if you do not watch the show the costume will not make sense for you. People who do not know the show will probably think your children are a hobo and gypsy and that father is dressed a too nice for Halloween. But those who wat! ch the show will definitely laugh and laugh. Here are instruction how to make the costumes: 1. One child needs to be dressed as a gypsy and another as a hobo. You can surely find something useful and appropriate in your house. Remember, the gypsy needs to stand on the left side facing the door when children press the doorbell. 2. Mother does her hair like Betty Draper and she takes black gloves and coat and carries something looking as a baby wrapped in a white blanket. She stands behind the children on the right side. As Betty Draper she cannot make a loving gesture toward her kids. 3. Father needs to act like Don Draper, it is the key to the success of this whole drama. He wears the nicest dark suit, thin tie, fedora and real or fake cigarettes. Most important is to stand away from the doorway with the annoyed look, so typical for Don Draper. If you want to make it more impressive, drive from house to house in an old Cadillac.
